This was the marketing problem with the AR-180 back in the 1980's. If they would have gone with the AR-15 magazines the public would have embraced the gun much more? Even during the late 1990's when Armalite was reborn they made their heavy barrel AR but the magazines were not compatible with the AR? The company was just trying to squeeze every cent out of the consumer?

Little known fact: PMAGs are ridiculously easy to convert for these guns. There is a elliptical logo on the right hand side of the mag which is exactly where the notch needs to go. Hump doesn't need to be ground off if you're ok with your mags not dropping free. Only other big change is the cutout for the bolt hold open needs to be extended (3 cuts) by about .25" I have one, and if you do your measurements right they're very easy to convert AR15 mags for. And once the AR15 mag has AR18 conversions, it's completely cross compatible with your AR-15 (tho your BHO on the 15 becomes inop)

The most important function of the recoil spring guide rods is they are what the bolt carrier rides on. Except for the track that the cam pin runs in, the bolt carrier doesn't touch the upper receiver, so the upper isn't required to be a precision fit.

It's the downside of the gas piston, for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. As the gas pressure forces the rod, the bolt and bcg back it also forces the gas key the other way which tends to flex the barrel down. Don't get this problem with an AR15 style gas tube.

Ive got a childrens book on guns that i was given given as a kid, im born 1971. Whats interesting is the book must have been a printed in a very narrow historical window. There was a picture of it with the ar10 with its trigger cocker in the handle and a smoothe forward furnature NAM m16. And the book said the ar18 was the future that every country and NATO would soon adopt. Made by stamped parts etc. etc. It could be produced in massive quantities for a lower cost than say that an FAL. Looking at the book today, its very good and its information is probably straight from Janes. But for a small amount of time it seems the 18 was believed in as the future
