I hope to learn and be half as good as you. I'm hoping to learn furniture flipp'in soon. Soon as I'm finished remodeling my house. Ugh taking a yr but almost done except for the decor on my walls that I plan to do myself and redo this huge traditional black to a lighter neutral color. Have any ideas? Seems most all others do white or black and i don't want either. So wish me luck

I’ve watched all the different videos you have on the gel stain brush techniques. I finally bought everything and it turned out fantastic. Took multiple coats to get a darker finish, but it turned out amazing. Wish we could post pictures here of the finished products that you inspired us to create!❤

You were the very 1st furniture refinisher I started watching, and then following. I love all the content you put out. I hope you never stop putting content up on KZbin. I knew from one of your other videos that you lived in Georgia & so do I, but when you said during this video that you’re from Indiana, I was like, WHAT! Me too! I’m originally from Indianapolis. I moved to Georgia in 2002. I’ve lived in Rome twice & in Newnan. Newnan was my fave but I have grandchildren now & I didn’t when I left, so I moved back so I could be closer to them. Thanks for doing the masterclass. I’ve always wanted to know how to do this finish.

Murphy’s oil soap for cleaning off the brushes/tools that either hardened from poly or have oil based stain on them. Depending on how long it’s been on there you may have to go one or two rounds soaking them, but it works like a charm and the brushes turn out like new when you’re all done :)

Thanks for this! I use both polycrylic and the oil modified version and love them both. I choose between them based on whether I’m willing to have the slightly warmer effect the oil modified gives. I apply both with a foam brush and I haven’t noticed a difference in how easily they wash out.

I'm an artist and I use oil paints. To clean my brushes I do the following: (1) wipe off most of the oil paint using paper towels, (2) rinse brushes in mineral spirits which is keep in a Silicoil Brush Cleaning Tank (a glass jar with a metal coil on the bottom which you drag the brush back and forth on), (3) wash brushes with Fels-Naptha soap, (4) dry the brushes...prop them up at a slight angle so water drains away from the brush ferrule. I wait 24 hrs before using these brushes again. I wear rubbber gloves while cleaning with Fels-Naptha soap, which is cheap, releases more oil paint from the brushes, and makes brushes soft :)

I love this Look that you introduced us all to and have refined over the years. I also love this table transformation with the black chairs. Question about mixing the Oil modified polyurethane with paint... If it was mixed one to one with a light color, such as a green, will it change the color of it? Also, when using it as a top coat, will it yellow ?
@blacksheephouse6 ай бұрын
The oil modified polyurethane doesn’t yellow over time BUT the one I’m using in the video has a tint of yellow to give the look of true polyurethane. But if you’re using the just plane water based polyurethane or poly it doesn’t yellow and is completely clear so no color change will happen. PS thanks for being around since the early days 🖤🖤

Your technique is amazing, and since I’m a newbie to redoing furniture, I’ll take all of the tips and advice I can get. I’m wanting to transform my bedroom set into this style/finish. Question: the paint use is it specifically designed for furniture or do I need to ask for that when I have some mixed? Also, do you have a “go-to” base paint color you normally use that you would recommend? Thanks for making these videos and being so transparent with how you use your technique. ❤️❤️

I have a question- I have a metal outdoor patio table. It’s got a faux wood finish but in gray 😢 I want to try this finish. Do you have a video on doing this on metal? Or do you have any advice or tips if one were to attempt this finish on metal?
@blacksheephouse6 ай бұрын
You can definitely do it on an outdoor table just use outdoor paint that says it’s for metal in the same colors and use gel stain in the color aged oak by minwax (at Lowe’s) the ppl at the paint counter can help you pick a paint that is for outdoor metal 🖤🖤

My son just bought a house and bought a table with 4 chairs and a bench. One of the chairs was missing a corner in the seat. I ended up making a corner for the seat (things moms do:) ) and doing this finish on the seats of chairs, top of table and top of bench using the home depot paint and the varathane briarsmoke gel stain as shown in one of your previous videos. I painted the rest of the chairs, bench and table legs with a black chalk paint (which I had never used before). What kind of clear coat would you recommend on the tabletop? This whole painting furniture thing is something new for me:) Thank you for great videos!

Can this work with eggshell paint sheen?
@blacksheephouse5 ай бұрын
It doesn’t work for me it ends up splotchy and the glaze absorbs into the porous paint you’ll need to put a clear topcoat on eggshell paint first if you want to do it.

I have been watching the master class on the bedroom suite and I was wondering what the average cost of having a bedroom suite done ?
@blacksheephouse5 ай бұрын
I’d charge around 1000 if you already have the furniture. I sold that set from the masterclass for 2400 but it was a really rare super pretty shape of French provincial furniture so that was a big part of the reason it sold for that amount.

HELP! I am about to cry! I watched your master class videos and love them! Thank you. My problem is this: I refinished a dining table with this method. I mistakenly used very fine sand paper after the first clear coat, before applying the 2nd coat. Well, that removed the gel stain finish in spots, and nothing I did could get the gel stain to stick in those spots. I had to resand the entire table top and start all over. Well, I was so excited to finally be finished today, but when I went to my garage to check on it, a piece of grass was embedded in the clear coat! In removing the grass, the stain in that spot came off. I REFUSE to resand and start over AGAIN! How do you deal with bald spots where the stain has come off (but the base paint remains?) For some reason the stain won’t take on top of/over in these spots for touch ups! Has this ever happened to you, and what is your solution/recommendation?
@blacksheephouse5 ай бұрын
Lisa, email me at BlackSheepRestoration@gmail.com so I can help you! You can use a suuuper fine paint brush to add in additional “grain” to the bare spots even over top of clear coat and then just wait for it to dry

This color was rugged tan and the paint I used was behr premium plus ultra or ppg break through from Home Depot in semi gloss but I often use Benjamin Moore advance tinted to that color as well. All are great paints. Rugged tan has a pinkish undertone, use open canyon if you want more yellow. In my latest pottery barn video description I list lots of base color options too so check that out if you haven’t yet 🖤
