Thats rather good, and takes advantage of 100% being intuitive for "all work completed". Converting the fractions to percentages is very clever.

I found the problem not clearly defined. That is, on Wednesday is the amount of work 2/5 of the TOTAL job, or is it 2/5 of the remaining 3/4 of the job.

7/20 x 5/5 = 35/100 = 35% 35% is better communication to a boss (or a student). So I would give an A for 7/20 and an A+++ for 35%.

Confusingly worded. For greater clarity, the question should have been: “You finished 1/4 of a job on Monday, and 2/5 more OF THE TOTAL JOB on Wednesday. WHAT FRACTION of the job remains?”

Found your explanation a bit confusing. Why not: Total the amount of work completed as 1/4 + 2/5 = 13/20 of the job. The remaining amount of work to complete the job is therefore 7/20. Explain the remaining work and the 1-13/20ths subtraction with a pie graph if you feel it needs clarification.

Greetings. The portion of the job remaining is 7/20. When 1/4 of the job is completed 3/4 is left undone. Thereafter, we completed 2/5 of the undone portion. Therefore, the portion left to be done is 3/4-2/5= (15-8)/20=7/20.

For those who need to see it correctly. 100% -1/4= 75% 75% - 2/5= 45% 2/5 of 75= 30 75% -30%= 45% 45%= 9/20 The 2/5 that was taken from 75% is equal to 30%, can be written as 30/100= 3/10= 6/20. Same as 1/4 which was taken from 100% is 25% or 25/100= 5/20 So 9/20 + 6/20 + 5/20= 20/20= 100% same as 9/20= 0.45, and 5/20= 0.3, and 5/20= 0.25 So 0.45 + 0.3 + 0.25= 1

Yeah, I read the 2nd day to be 2/5 of the remaining work, so 1 - (1/4 + (2/5 x 3/4)) = 1 - (1/4 + 3/10) = 9/20.

Need to move 100 barrels, moved ¼ of a 100 (25) on first day, 75 remains. Later I moved ⅖ of 75 (30), 45 barrels remain.

Omg Yes I didn't actually think someone would get it. It's wording clearly as just more, not "more than Monday", if it had said more than Monday then yes you would be adding 40% to 25%, but in this case you're not. So the answer is 45% or 9/20.

1/4...(4x5=20) - 1x5=5 2/5...(5x4=20) - 2x4=8 13/20 = 7/20 remaining. This is how I did it in my head. Probably the wrong way of going about it.
