Me four. I looked at the 4 possible answers and saw 12. Well 12 dimes equals $1.20 and 4 quarters is $1.00 which equals $2.20. No math needed on this one.

@@lamper2 I know. I simply agreed with those who acknowledged they did it their head. I have 2 degrees in science which included studying advance algebra and calculus. Thus, the LOGIC doesn't mean much to me. However, I have watched many of his videos which I enjoyed and think he's doing a great job helping people people who don't have a similar background with me.

As much a logic question as well as a math problem. The number of quarters has to be multiples of 2 so you have a "zero" as the last digit. 2=.50 4=1.00 ect. Given that the total cannot exceed 2.20 then there will be 4 quarters = 1.00 and 3 x 4 = 12 dimes which equals 1.20 for a total of 2.20

It gives more algebraic fun to take the X for the dimes. Then you finally get: 18 1/3 X = 220 => X = 220 : 55 x 3 = 12 (dimes) and thus 12 : 3 = 4 quarters (12 x 10 + 4 x 25 = 220 cents = 2,2 dollars).

Even Though I'm Australian. A dime is 10c and a quater is 25c. So 4x25c=$100. 12 dimes =$1.20 . - 12 dimes is the answer. You don't need algebra for this- i got it right. ( Aussie ex Maths feacher).

Yeah, exactly how I thought of it. For every quarter you have 3 dimes, so 55¢ and do the simple math as you said. It took about 3 seconds. I can't understand why some of these problems are so overcomplicated.

At the title card, my answer is 4 quarters, 12 dimes. Q = # of quarters 3Q = # of dimes .25Q + .1(3Q) = 2.2 (state the problem in terms of Q) .25Q +.3Q = 2.2 (distribute the .1) .55Q = 2.2 (combine the quarters and dimes) Q = 2.2 / .55 = 4 (4 quarters) 3Q = 12 (12 dimes)

Love algebra: D = number of dimes (that we are looking for) and Q = number of quarters so the equations are (1) D . 10 cents + Q . 25 cents = 220 cents and (2) D = 3Q (1+2) ( 3Q ) . 10 + 25Q = 55Q = 220 so Q = 4 and D = 3Q = 12 so answer D. Also possible (1) and (3) Q = D/3 (1+3) 10D + 25D/3 = 30D/3 + 25D/3 = 55D/3 = 220 so D = 3 . 220 /55 = 3 . 4 = 12 Also... stupid multiple choice questions that rule out several answer by itself... Number of Dimes is 3 times number of Quarters, so the answer must be divisible by 3 so only answer C and D are possible. If D=6 (answer C) then Q=2 resulting in 6x10 + 2x25 = 60 + 50 = 110 cents. Not only this answer is wrong obviously but also you can see that doubling the C-answer gives D=12.

I used brute force. The number of dimes must be a multiple of 3. Let's try 9 dimes, 3 quarters. 90+75= $1.60. Try 12 dimes, 4 quarters 120 + 100= $2.20 QED

For every quarter, there are 3 dimes. Add them together, and they are 55 cents. 55 cents is 1/4 of $2.20. So, that would be 4 quarters and 12 dimes to make $2.20.

Lol, I actually have three slide rules, why I don’t know. I used them in high school 45 years ago. We were required in AP algebra and trig. No calculators, my teacher was an old school teacher and an early end of the earth prepper. I can remember how to do sq. roots but that’s about it. It's the total money value of the quarters that needs to end in zero, not the "answer," which is 12. That way, the money value of the dimes will end in zero so that the number of dimes will be a whole number with no fraction left over.

Dull? Overly complex, but he intentionally used algebra on a simple problem in order to teach how to apply algebra to this kind of problem. So take your shortcuts, then go back & use algebra to get the same answer.
