pennies=12 nickels=18 dimes=10 quarters=15 But I had to use logic because my equations didn't seem to work. I tried 577=25q+10d+5n+p q=p+3 n=1.5p d=p-2 and using substitution. Didn't seem to work out. I'm going to see where my equations messed up later. My logic was that pennies had to be an even number (ending in 2), so 2, 12, or 22. (You can't have 1.5 times an odd number ending in 7 and getting an integer). 12 was the only number which worked. And I went from there.

I ended up not using the calculator. I drew a crude bar graph, so I could picture what was going on. I realized that using quarters was a handy way to titrate the relationships. I just counted the relative number of the other coins to that of the quarters. I soon realized I needed an even number of pennies for this to work at all. This meant I needed an odd number of quarters. This gave me some good clues. And, after my attempt to solve this through algebra failed, I got rid of the decimal points by turning the total into 577 instead of 5.77.

He has: 12 pennies, 18 nickels, 10 dimes, and 15 quarters. It took me forever to figure this out. I'll be glad to be shown a more efficient way.

Change 5.77 $ into cents since quarters,pennis,...are cents. This is 577 cents. Form an equation Dimes=x Pennies=x+2 Quarters=x+2+3 Nickel = ( × +2)1.5 Collect all these and equalize them to 577 cents X will be 126 cents and this is the value of dîmes.Value of dîmes will hep to get all value. Pennies =126+2 =128 cents Quarters =126+2+3 =131 cents Nickels =126×1.5 =126+64 =192 cents Proof 126+128+131+192 =577cents or =5.77$

Lea goes to the store. He gives the cashier a handful of many miscellaneous coins, asking for. $5. bill, the rest in quarters and pennies. He counts out 2 pennies, 3 quarters, and the $5. Les hands the remaining coins to a homeless person.

I did it an old fashion way by trying different values. I knew from the beginning that the number of pennies had to be 2 +5n, n could be 0 and up. Otherwise it would be impossible to get that last seven in $5.77 Therefore I got it right the third time since the n=2. I hope it makes sense what I just did.
