Hello! This task is more complicated. First of all, you base the size of a tire on the rim size. Then you have to know what the tire's outer circumference or diameter is. A tire with the dimension 26"x7/8" is 75.6" in circumference while a tire with the dimension 26"x3.00" is 85.43" in circumference. There are sixteen standardized individual tire sizes for the 26" rim size. This means that the number of revolutions at 900ft varies between 142.85 revs to 126.4 revs depending on which tire you have. Riding a bike on a rim is not recommended. It becomes difficult to steer , braking and handling. When you end up falling it is not good for your health. In the end even the air pressure in the tire under load affects the number of revolutions at 900ft.

The 26” is for the sake of the math problem, don’t need to be so technical about the actual diameter of different tires. He should of just said “a wheel diameter of 26 inches “. Relax and enjoy solving the problem

Your answer is close, but it's not actually correct. The correct answer is 132.22 reveloutions. It's probably just rounding errors. I did it all in inches and used a much longer value for pi

It's because he converted the tire diameter to feet instead of the distance to inches. The larger the unit used, the larger the error from rounding.

Have you allowed for the outside or inside diameter of the tyre? A 26” wheel rim will measure approx 30” across the outside of the tyre

Actually, they made no revolutions because they were quite happy with the current state of things and had no wish to make any trouble.

It is the rim that is 26”. The tire is really about 28+” in diameter. This critical when programming a bicycle computer.

Got your answer at first but then assumed that if each wheel turns 132.7 times the total revolutions are 265.4. Does this make sense to anyone else?

Assuming the the wheels actually have a diameter of 26”, then circumference: 26”*pi = approx 81.68” Distance travelled in “: 900ft * 12”/ft = 10800”. Rotations per wheel: 10800”/approx 81.68” = approx 132.22 times Total rotations: 2 wheels * approx 132.22 = approx 264.44 rotations

The correct answer is approximately 260 revolutions. Approximately 130 revolutions per tyre. The question asked how many revolutions did the tyres make, not how many revolutions did each tyre make. The can only be approximate because bicycle tyres are pneumatic and the diameter (especially the rear tyre) will change when Ed sits on the bike. This is assuming Ed doesn't skid or pull a manual or jump.

The tire measurement (26”) has two significant figures and the distance (900 ft) has three. Technically the answer should be expressed in two significant figures but I will give you three using a value of pi beyond 3.14 does give a more “accurate”. Best answer is probably 132 ft. I would probably dock a student a couple of points for not expressing the correct number of significant figures and units in the answer

Out of curiosity....when did they stop teaching about "rounding numbers"? I notice that in your videos that you never round numbers? For example, when converting dia. to ft. in this problem (which is 2.166667) you gave the answer of 2.16 instead of 2.17. I'm 73 and enjoy doing the problems first and then watch the video to see if I still remember my math from decades ago. If we ignore the discrepancy between your answers and mine due to me rounding and you not - I'm batting 100%. Not bad for an Old Geezer who hasn't been in school for 1/2 a century and still prefer using my Slide Rule than a Calculator. LOL

Just putting pi as a value when some might not know it. Reading other comments everyone is putting pi x 26" = 81.68 but nobody has put the actual value for people who might not know it. Diameter X pi (3.14159) gives you the circumference of the circular object. I was taught 5 decimal points is enough for most simple tasks.

I'm having a big problem with using pi in the formula. As soon as you multiply by a never-ending decimal your result is going to be a never-ending decimal and a physical circle with a fully measurable diameter has a fully measurable circumference. You can determine 100% of the circumference but if you use pi you will only have the approximate value. Yes i get it it's gonna be 99.999999999999999...% but it'll never be 100 and that IS measurable. There has to be another formula for circumference that doesn't use pi.

There is insuffiient information in the question therefore it is unanswerable. Almost 5 minutes in we are told the tires are 26" wide. Even more nonsense. If they are than it is not a bike it is a substantial piece of machinery of unknown type. Width is width, diameter is diameter and and if you don't know the difference between the two I'm glad you're not teaching anyone I know.
