That's not the point. Yes, this can easily be done in one's head, but it's the process that is important to know. If there is a similar problem and the numbers aren't easy integers you need to know how to do it. That said, you're right, it could have a much shorter video.

It also important that all teachers are different in their teaching, just as any learner can be different either from ant other learner in the way they learn, including just individual learner. A very experienced teacher knows this, an can even explain this in face to face just by virtue if experience. An extraordinary teacher can synthesize those experiences and transfer the essence of those experiences to fit the virtual video platform, so that he is teaching to several types of learning approaches simultaneously. As the previous commenter mentioned, the lesson is also a preparation that helps make sense of the process for other similar problems that might not look so obvious.

It took me a lot longer than I thought it would, to figure this one out. When I finally came up with the formula, it was a "duh" moment. I just simply forgot about nickels for a moment, and focused on the pennies. since the problem says that 49 coins are worth 85 cents, I ended up subtracting 49 from 85. I got 36. Since for every 5 pennies I subtract, I need to add 1 nickel, I just divided 36 by 4, to get 9 nickels. to proof it, 9 X 5 = 45, + the 40 remaining pennies, equals 85 cents.

If all rhe coins were pennies, i would be 36 cents short (85-49). Sice a nickel is worth 4 cents more than a penny, I need to replace 9 pennies with 9 nickels (36/4). I need 9 nickels and 40 pennies.

I just used the substitution method to try a few combos. It wasn't too hard because the pennies had to be divisible by 5. It took about two minutes and a pen and paper to come up with 9 nickels and 40 pennies.

Exactly. There is a definite advantage to have the times table memorized. When I was a kid in elementary school in the 60's, we would have to flip our paper over and go as fast as we could going thru the times tables for one minute.

I got it but took me a while from the thumb nail to construct 2 equations and 2 unknowns and substitution to solve. I looked at it at first and figured I could solve it. Took me a bit longer than I thought it should to construct the two simple equations. Retired mechanical engineer age 70. PS. my solution which btw, I believe is simpler than the way you did it: N = number of Nickels P = number of Pennies Equation 1: N + P = 49, therefore: P = 49- N Equation 2: 5N + 1P = 85 substituting P from Equation 1: 5N + (49 - N) = 85 4N = 85-49 = 36 N = 9 9 nickels = 45 cents of nickels P = 49 - 9 = 40 cents of pennies 40 pennies + 45 cents of nickels = 85 cents

👍 Retired electronics engineer, same age. I used the same path. In my younger years, I would have made the same moves as you. But when I had to teach at times, I went verbose, explaining each and every step. It made it easier for the beginners to digest. For instance: 5n + (49 - n) = 85 Since all operations on the left side have equal priority, we can remove the parentheses. 5n + 49 - n = 85 Subtract 49 from both sides. 5n + 49 - n - 49 = 85 - 49 5n - n = 36 4n = 36 Divide both sides by 4. 4n / 4 = 36 / 4 n = 9

Your videos fill me with nostalgia doing my Algebra homework in the ninth grade with my dad helping me. He'd passed Algebra and Trig as a basketball scholarship student in college and really knew his stuff but would skip steps that his mentally challenged son needed. As the year went on, he slowed down and came to my speed even though it was three decades ago he took that college course, he just saw thing intuitively, a skill I never developed even though I was much better at it once I passed The Calculus One in college.

@@dazartingstall6680 if n is the number of nickels and p is the number of pennies, then n + p = 85 cents (and not 5n + p as I think you incorrectly state) There are 5 pennies in a nickel so when n is multiplied by 5 you get the number of pennies in n number of nickels. Therefore 5n+p = the number of pennies in 85 cents. There are 25 pennies in a cent so the number of pennies in 85 cents = 25 x 85 = 2125. If n is the number of nickels and p is the number of pennies, 5n + p = 2125 pennies 🙂

Instead of 2 unknowns (N and P) how about 1 unknown such as x= no. of pennies and (49-x) = number of nickels? Then .01x + .05 (49-x) = .85

@@terry_willis That is true, you don't need 2 variables while they are related. Downside is that variable x does not relate to pennies or nickles and could mess things up. So I would prefer 1P + 5(49-P) = 85 (no need for decimals) or much better because we only want to know the number of Nickels: (49-N) + 5N = 85 In both case there is only one variable and no decimals. .

I used a single variable in a single equation. If X is the number of nickels, the value of the number of nickels would be 5X value of the nickels ((5X). Added to the value of coins (49 minus x) is $.85. Therefore, 5X +49 minus X equals 85., 4X equals 36 and X equals nine.

All the answers provided here in the comments are wrong, as is the answer in the video. The question at the start of the problem is, “Can you solve?” Therefore, the only possible answers are “yes” or “no”. Depending on your mathematical abilities, either answer may be correct.

You should also show the proof calculation at the end of the video after solving the problem. That is: 49 total coins - 9 nickels = 40 pennies and (9 x $0.05) + (40 x $0.01) = $0.85. This final check proves that the problem was solved correctly. Always try to proof your solution to the problem after determining your answer to the question.

When problems are very SIMPLE (such as this one), I find it's most PRACTICAL to just solve them immediately in your head. Take an estimate that's off. Let's say 15 nickels -- that's 75 cents; clearly too big. How about 10 nickels? That leaves 39 pennies -- 89 cents. WAY close. In fact, it looks like it has to be 9 nickels. 45 cents, with 40 pennies left. Yup. Took me 7-8 seconds at most.

Say P is number of Pennies and N is number of Nickels: 1P + 5N = 85 and P + N = 49 -> N = 49 - P so P + 5.(49 - P) = 85 or P-5P = 85 - 245 or -4P = -160 So P = 40 and N = 49 - 40 = 9 nickels. Or you could take the other (easier) route: P = 49 - N so 49 - N + 5N = 85 so 4N = 85 - 49 = 36 so 4N = 36 or N = 9 nickels.
