In my excitement to try this game I rushed over to Amazon and hit "Buy-Now", without so much as a second thought... It was then the day after, once my parcel had been delivered, and I tore into the thin amazon box and carefully unwrapped my game, popping out each little soldier coin carefully until each last one was done that I moved onto the charector cards. I picked them up, admiring the art style on the back of each card, and then turned them over to find that, to my horror, a jumbled assortment of letters sprung out of me. I had accidentally ordered the german version of the game. I do not speak german. It is opened. It cannot be returned. Life has rolled me a farkle.

I've been playing this game on a semi-regular basis since I was like 12 or something. I've seen it with different names, Farkle, Zilch, Scratch, 10,000 are the ones I remember clearly. I've played with varying rule sets for scoring, and this game doesn't have as many ways to score as I'm used to. But I love that someone took a game I enjoy so much and made it more than just a dice game. This was a great episode!

Maybe today my brain is sluggish... but this is the first Tabletop I can remember where I think the rulebook would be easier to understand than watching people play it. I'm having a hard time following the details. BUT... that's a good reason to watch it more than once. I see what you're doing there...
@345tom7 жыл бұрын
1's and 5's always score (100, 50 respectively), and then there's special combinations, like in Poker. So four of a kinf, 3 pairs, a straight etc etc. The red dice only has two real faces- the swordy axey thing, and the dragon face. If your rolling for soldiers, the dragon cancels all your soldiers that were just rolled, and eats your dice. If you get the axes, you can either double your rolled soldiers, or get an item that does... stuff. You can start fighting the dragon after having 5000 people. The same rules apply as before, but you lose people now, instead of gaining them. To hurt the dragon, you need to roll a Dragon or the axes on the special dice (Doing 1 and 2 damage respectively). Oh, and if you roll at any time, and don't get scoring dice OR the special faces on the other dice, it's called a Farkle, and your turn is over! Don't worry, my brain tuned out of the introduction to the game, and I just figured it as we went along. Essentially, the entire game is based on luck.
@claymeyer50467 жыл бұрын
You should've been my chemistry teacher. And now that you explained it so easily, I think they might've overcomplicated this episode...

@stephenking52517 жыл бұрын
I'm still struggling to understand how the farkle works, specifically on Neil's first turn.
@345tom7 жыл бұрын
Stephen King So on Neils first turn, he rolled 600 soldiers. The dragon ate them, and the dice with that, so he can only roll three dice. Then Neil goes on to roll his 3 dice, none of which score. HOWEVER, he is saved, because he rolls a face side on the red dice. The dragon negates farkles, so Neil gets to reroll. But, he just doesn't roll a scoring dice again, so his turn is over. And Cley Meyer, yeah they definitely did over complicate the introduction. Then again, the game has elements that are just there (The magic items, the companions). If you watch through, they don't seem to have THAT big an impact on play, and are only used on a couple of turns for big swings (See: Routh rerolling to get a straight- that gave him 3000 people instead of 150 for that roll), but mainly offer small rewards.

I'd love to know how long a game of this usually takes, and whether what was played was over the usual. Because thats a lot of dice rolling, for not a lot of excitement. I'd definitely get bored around 5 turns into this, where nothing's really happening. It really seemed to outstay it's welcome. Especially when it really just comes down to luck. The level of strategy involved seems very minimal.

I used to play Farkle (the original, not this Dragon one) quite a lot and it's a good time passing game. Use it to supplement another activity like a party, a dinner, or other social event, but don't make it the "sit down and play a game" main focus. I like that this Dragon Farkle attempts to build on it but at the basis, it's still just a dice rolling game.
@FriendlyNeighborhoodDM7 жыл бұрын
Hence why it is termed as a "press-your-luck" style game.
@345tom7 жыл бұрын
I mean, sure Jay Dee, it can be that. But the game seemed to over stay it's welcome. I enjoy some luck based gaming, but it really felt like this lacked the depth of play that brings you back, or the brevity that makes you want to play multiple times. I dunno, I feel like the game doesn't hold up to a 30 minute play time, never mind whatever it was before they edited it down.

reminds me of a d&d game i had. fighting a dragon, we decided to go allout on it and add aplenty of cannon fodder. bought potions to resist its breath for all of our cannon fodder we bought. 200+ peons with polearms mostly and alot of identical weapons of our party. everyone was disguised to look alike and had illusions on them and then we charged inside (some peons flying via potions) along with some of the other players also. total mix and match situation and then just beating down the dragon. all peons got murdered some bit into the fight because the dragon used a spell to change its breath to a different type but the "heroes" cough. won the day

There is a lot wrong in the video, I've noticed. Farkles being called when it isn't actually a Farkle (or they've got the wrong die results displayed for the rolls). Probably was enough wrong that occurred during play that wasn't noticed until after post, or at all, that they just presented it as it was called when it was played regardless of whether or not it was accurate or adhered to the rules. These things kind of took me out of it though.

I think Derek's problem was that he couldn't roll badly. Almost all of his rolls were good rolls and he kept guessing the psychic number right, too. The problem, though, is that during the dragon fighting phase, those good rolls suddenly mean bad things happen, so all of his good luck turned every time he tried to win.

I honestly see it more as a travel game than a game you'd sit down and play or make time for. It is pretty bare bones, but a lot of popular games are like that too. And some people just love killing themselves with unlucky dice and getting mad at always rolling farkles. Myself included.
@RonnieLunn847 жыл бұрын
Same here. I was really interested in this game but it seems like if the video outstayed its welcome, playing the game would as well. It's the type of game that really shouldn't take any longer than 20 minutes, and because of the difficulty of killing the dragon this could literally take all day.

so wait? not superman?
@Monkeyshaman7 жыл бұрын
Sugarless well obviously not, do you see a cape? Also superman wears his pants on the outside and if you look really really close you can see that he wears grownup trousers.
@PhazonOmega7 жыл бұрын
Actually, yes, he does wear a cape; it's called the Cloak of Yon. Also, modern Supes doesn't have underwear on the outside, so it's completely plausible this guy is, in fact, Superman.

Wait, how do you know what superman calls his cape unless you're superman?

Damn it, Brandon Routh is rather attractive, seemingly nice, and fun. What chance do normal people have.

I now want to see Ray Palmer in Legends kill a dragon, just so Brandon can show how much better he is than everyone else in dragon slaying. :D
