My mom used to ride the train up to Snoqualmie pass to go skiing and playing in the snow, when she was a teen.

My Great Grandfather was the Orting Station Master circa 1900. Prior to that he was a section foreman building track out through Wilkeson, Carbonado. He was transferred out here from the Twin Cities in 1889.

Milwaukee Waterway, now filled in, was a little community within the city. Olson Tugboat Company's office, shop, and pier was at the head of the waterway. I lived there for several years during the 70s, on a tugboat.. There were also large wharves with warehouses for deep water ships, known as the Milwaukee Docks. Also a car barge slip. Olson Tug stored log rafts along the East side of the waterway. The Milwaukee railroad had a large hump yard there, where box cars were sorted. The "music" of live at Olson Tug was the rumble of switch engines and the crash of box cars coupling in the hump yard. The Milwaukee also had a machine shop, turntable, and roundhouse there. The engineer at the boiler house gave me a tour, of the shop, about 1967. The machine shop and boiler house had been removed by the time I became a resident there in 1975. It was a lively and interesting place to live, I thought. I enjoyed towing rafts of logs around the harbor. Olson Tugboat Company was established in Tacoma in 1891. Also you could mention the Tacoma Eastern Railroad, which runs out to Morton, 65 miles, with a branch line to Centralia. One gong and a jingle (full ahead in the Puget Sound bell code). Keith.

Couple of things: 1) Tacoma Rail runs trains out in Frederickson; 2) in the late 70s, I rode Amtrak out of Union Station going from Tacoma to Portland for a day trip with my grandma and aunt; 3) there were trains running on the Prairie Line after 1993. I attended UW-Tacoma from 1998 to 2000, and there would be trains running through the now decommissioned tracks. Often carrying military equipment, most memorably Abrams tanks.
