A lof of people don't understand the determination it takes to defend fully for 90 mins. If you've watched atletico (or italy) you'll understand that not conceding is very important in such ties. To an amateur fan this tie may seem like it's over; but I will say it's far from over.

Exactly, imo atleti did their job perfectly atleast almost perfectly, atleti initially played with a 5-3-2 structure in defense, but city were pushing more numbers into the halfspaces, with city rotating the posession from flank to flank, it was difficult for atletis midfield 3 to cope up with city's transition to either flanks, hence city would easily get into the final third by attacking the space which was left uncovered by atleti mid3, simeone saw this problem and he shifted to a versatile mid4 which would often form a mid5, imo their defense did the job perfectly apart from that defensive flaw which led to fodens goal

Simeone's sub at 68' min was a bit too early, in my opinion, had he waited for another 10 min to sub Grisman, he may have come on top 1:0 instead. Pep made a very smart substitution in response to exploit the little crack Simeone offered. Great work by Foden and KDB. It was a very cerebral and tactical game. Looking forward to the second leg.

Are they gonna attack now though? Playing extremely defensively is why Atletico can never win against great teams. Sure, you'll do a "park the bus" kind of game all the time, and eventually will pay-off, like when they eliminated Liverpool, but defending only most of the time is why they lost to Real Madrid in the UCL final back in 2014 and 2016. Atletico is now in the urge to actually attack, or else, they will die out o nothing. Once they have to create an attack, Man City will finally find spaces. But if they do not, and stay in the back defending again, how are they supposed to win? Man City is in absolute control, I'm pretty sure a 1-0 is a terrible result just because Atltetico has to attack now. However, if Atletico does play defensively, like I think they will for like 70 mins, then by the time they have to attack it will be game over. I actually believe the pressure from their crow is gonna play against them, because if they do play defensively, people will not be happy, and if they go all attack because they're forced to and feel their people's pressure, then they will make mistakes. Recently Pep usually uses the isolation tactic Mahrez could be 1 on 1 and many players are gathered on the left side. The key player in this plan is Cancelo on the left and Mahrez on the right. So, If Walker participated in this match, City could get a chance to attack smoothly since Cancelo can play an inverted wing-back rule on the left side. Of course, Carrasco's participation in ATM is also very critical. His dribbling skill is very threatening. But Comparing the player who influences more to tactics in total, Walker's absence made me feel more fatal in this match. So although 2nd match is City's away, I think City could play better. Not just because I'm a City fan. XD

I'd thought that Simeone wanted to reverse the style and that's why he made the 3 subs. I was wrong and he made a mistake coz mid was less solid and Atleti was still vulnerable in the attack. However, if not genius action by Foden (he turn around and passed the ball through hole surrounded by 3 opponents) the result would have been 0-0. Atleti was very strong in neutralizing City's attacks.

@@sfb4144 My point is, people go on about how well organised Athletico are as a unit etc…is it really that much of an achievement to stick 9 bodies behind the ball in ur own third most games and offer next to nothing going forward. Therefore, breaking them down is obviously a difficult task. So credit to City for doing so. Dont be so defensive! I enjoy watching City and look forward to the game on Sunday against a side who will come out and have a go at you.
