I have a cheap hack for your mini-rant on pressure pads; I have no love for them either, about 400+ rounds ago (mostly buck and slug, I don't train to take on ducks) I mounted my streamlight to my 870 and it hasn't budged since. How? 2 Chinesium pieces from scamazon. First is a pic rail adapter to put on a 1 inch scope tube to mount a backup red dot or laser on it. That piece was like $13 Canadian (26 cents American). Fun fact; 1 inch scope tubes, most 12g shotgun mag tubes and Streamlight Polytac all have 1 inch outside diameter! So long story short, put the pic adapter on the 870 mag tube (far nuf forward i don't crush my thumb pumping with light on....I said what I said), mount a cheap spare 1" scope mount on the adapter (mount also leftover from scamazon, weaver brand), put light into scope mount, tighten with blue loctite call her done. If interested I'll post links to the parts in comments

I’ve played around with different light setups on shotguns and my preferred setup for a right hand shooter (but can be manipulated on weak side) is a Streamlight TLR-1 HL (any high lumen pistol light will work) with a pressure pad and the upgraded dual switch tail cap. All mounted to right side of Magpul foregrip and primarily manipulated with left hand fingertips (but can be actuated with right hand if swapping shoulders). Super comfortable to use, easy tactile interface that is simple to index and redundancy if the pressure pad fails. I also learned the hard way to not use small rigid attachments on shotguns. Attempted using one piece of a Strike Industries Bikini foregrip as a reference point to quickly index the pressure pad, but the recoil concentrated at that small spot on my knuckle was murder. 😂 No matter how I gripped it, each shot felt like it was ripping that finger off.

When I get the why Shotty question... simple answer, Math. Folks like 9mm for defense, 00 buck pellets weigh the same and travel as similar speed. So yeah my 870 might have 5+1 shells but that's 54 x 9mm coming 9 at a time for a vibe check. Thanks for reminding me to send the SBS to Vangcomp. Also Admin you should consider using the Haught Push/Pull technique with the ole 870.

My dad used to write articles about hunting waterfowl, when it was my time to join him one of the only options in 3" 20 gauge was the remington 870. I would definitely choose to be a 10 man group with ARs over 40 with 870s. An average AR shooter can easily shoot out to 300, or even 500 if proned out and have at least a 3x magnifier. Could also shoot fast enough to get fire superiority even when outnumbered 4:1, especially when sticking out at the shotguns max effective range which is closer to 55-100 yards depending on the load and shooter. Maybe out to 200 with a good shotgunner on a dedicated slug gun with optic. Assuming you have some freedom in AR set ups, a four man team with 2 budget SPR builds, and 2 with GPRs or SBRs for security could act as the base of fire, while 2 teams of 3 using 1 LPVO on a 14.5-16" and 2 red dot magnifiers on an 11.5-16" gun could act as your assault teams. That would give infinitely more flexibility and range of options than any mix of barrel lengths, ammo choice, and accessories on a pump action. In the more open desert/ plains/ farm fields/ mountains max range is your friend. Inside a building/ jungle rate of fire set on a choke point is your friend. The only way you really lose is if you're stuck in a 50 yard square with minimum to no cover. Even assuming both are slick with irons and no spare ammo on a more realistic "map" the ARs are at a slight advantage with increased range, ammo, and accuracy but I'm assuming both groups would have roughly the same total budget of ~20K for guns, and 5-10k for ammo/mags/kit to carry the ammo.

I'm like wolverine kind of immune to shooters fatigue thankfully I traded my uncle for a Remington 870 field from the 1950s and I liked it and glad I was introduced to it and stuff like that but it was really heavy I liked the original furniture on it but it was okay I grew up hunting with the Mossberg 500 and still ended up letting the Remington go and I have a Maverick 88 at moment which I still prefer in my opinion but still all awesome reliable shotguns

I think we need to know what terrain were engaging in for the final question. That literally makes the entire difference. I lean toward 10 guys with AR's over 40 with shotguns in alot of circumstances.

Im definitely a wood guy on shotguns, hell alot of rifles tbh, just love that classic look. But i can totally understand how some modern stocks could definitely feel better like you were saying. Far as the battle, i think it depends on distance of engagement honestly. 40 guys unloading 9pellet bucksot all at once is a hell of volly of fire coming at you but if your 50-75 yards apart i think rather have an AR.

You dropped a good puzzle there...Shotgun crew VS M4 crew. Depends i think a lot on what the M4 set up is. If its a bare, iron-sights, no grips stock M4 with non-AAC sponsored ammo in an open field then probably i'd still take the M4. Now if you slam a bunch of try hard nerds in a building, might as well go shock and awe and be Team Shotgun with dragon breath or flechette rounds. Nothing says "Hello neighbour" like turning a corner and getting transformed into one of those kids toys with the nails that make prints when you stick your palm onto it.
