11:07 The patch for B/229th AVN is wrong. We wore the 916th SPT BDE patch, but the one in the video is the 7th ID patch. 16:29 Pretty much all AV companies do have flight operations sections, I was a 15P. But Gray Eagle companies are the only ones that have warrants doing flight ops with us as well, otherwise in rotary/fixed wing Army units it's just a handful of 15Ps that run the section.

Fair enough, for some reason I thought B-229 was in 16th CAB rather than the 2916th but was wrong. On the Flight Operations Sections, were those task organized or part of the company's MTOE? The MTOE/OTOEs I've seen for the assault helicopter and attack battalion for example list most of the 15Ps under the battalion S-3/TAC CP and don't mention a flight ops section in the companies (I don't have anything on fixed wing outside of the GE though)

@@BattleOrder I'm pretty sure the 15P positions were MTOE'd, but I also wasn't in any assault/attack units to speak for them specifically, if they are different. I needed a 4187 Personnel Action form sent up to BN to transfer to a deploying sister company who had an open 15P slot in their MTOE they needed to fill if that's indicative of anything. On the other hand another time I was tasked out to a different sister company to help their flt ops for a few months as well, but my leadership/CoC remained with my original company. The Gray Eagle flight ops section make-up in your video is pretty spot-on though. Besides UAS I spent most of my time in a MEDEVAC company in garrison where it was at the minimum 5 15Ps: 1x15P30, 2x15P20, and 2x15P30. Though yes, there were also a bunch of 15Ps banished to the shadow realm up at BN S-3 and HHC companies, doomed to never actually do flight ops lol. Almost all the actual flight ops work like radio comms, records management, flight gear inventory/sign-out, flying hours program, etc. was done at the company level, at least for garrison and my small company-sized deployment. If a whole BN or above deployed together I could see 15Ps congregating together up at the BN flight ops level to keep everyone on the same page and aware of all the aircraft operating at a time. But in garrison each company is pretty much doing their own missions and sometimes each company is operating out of different locations, so it's easier to have flight ops at the company level instead of at a centralized BN flight ops.

What are the duties of the warrants in the Gray Eagle's flight ops section? I assume one of them is the Flight Ops OIC but I couldn't find much on it

@@BattleOrder I can't really speak on the specifics since I wasn't a warrant myself, but from what I remember the warrants would do things like coordinating with various agencies, receive taskings from other units and partner forces, work out flight scheduling and crew rest periods with the input of the platoon sergeants, and supervised all the active flights going on from inside the TOC. From what I saw, there wasn't a whole lot of difference between the OIC and the other warrant that would be sitting next to them. They rotated on and off duty as OIC, and the other warrant was kind of there to relieve some of the workload when things got hectic. I guess it'd be more accurate to think of the OIC's role as more akin to a battle captain in responsibilities since it was a role they'd take on each shift rather than permanently be the OIC. I'm sure one of them was the "permanent OIC" on paper, probably the most experienced warrant, but it sure didn't feel like it in practice. Mainly because operations went on 24/7 and that single warrant couldn't be there 24/7 to manage operations continuously. From my personal experience, the 1st and 3rd most experienced warrants were together on one shift, while the 2nd most experienced would be on the other shift with an SP/IP NCO sitting next to the warrant to assist them. They'd brief each other on what's currently going on and anything else of importance that happened during their shift twice a day at each handover (noon & midnight) so they both could stay on the same page. Though for the purposes of communicating with other units, all of them would call themselves the OIC since it got them more cred/respect to get the mission done. Turns out other units don't usually prioritize your requests if you announce yourself as an NCO or CW1 instead of OIC.

@@mingng3482there’s a section on the payload operators screen which he can use to minimize the HUD, we only do this when actively striking TGTs bc our footage is being pushed out on UVIDS and they try to keep things private, although in my opinion it’s kinda useless since we’re likely already been staring at the TGT for hours, which will show the exact 10 digit MGRS grid in the bottom right corner of the screen.

The Army's Gray Eagle is similar to the Air Force's retired Predator, but with a different powerplant that they run with JP8 like the rest of the Army and different control software (and other differences). The Reaper is a larger turboprop driven aircraft with higher speed, service ceiling, and double the munitions capacity. So the Reaper is superior for strike but in Army service the GE is sort of recon/surveillance first and strike second

@@WinkelmanSM-3 I don't look into Air Force stuff all that often. For Army stuff they publish all of their manuals online (googling ATP + something, like "ATP aviation" will normally find something with good info in it). The Marines are sort of the same with their MCRP/MCWPs although I'm not sure about the air force. Manuals regarding the technicals of a specific platform, like the MQ-9 or RQ-7, would likely be CUI and thus not accessible to the public. Details on platforms like the Gray Eagles in public manuals are more general, non-technical and capability/planning-oriented For this video a UAS warrant officer also volunteered to look over my script.

Seems like we are developing an over dependence on drones, especially with how our procurement process seems to be developing. For example, in talking with a USAF Master Sgt, the contract for the F-35 requires civilian contractors to conduct any repairs or higher level maintenance (I'm thinking depot level, forgot to get a specific). The airforce might be working on something along those lines, I flew RQ-7Bs in the army and we had nothing that was intended for air defense, I mean you could lase a helicopter or a relatively slow moving fixed wing aircraft and hit it with a hellfire, but it's not really meant for that, and it would take a fair bit of skill to pull it off.

Looks like the only major downside is that it is fixed wing and needs a runway, and thus much more infrastructure than any of the other Army's regular air assets. I imagine a rotary Wing replacement, like an upgraded fire Scout or something, that can use all the same operating facilities as Apaches, Blackhawks, etc would be a major enabler

this is the main reason why the army has more RQ-7 Shadow units down to the brigade level and directly attached to Helicopter attack squadrons. The Shadows are able to set up on ad hoc or hastily built runways ranging from a simple flat piece of dirt or an unused road, and even in emergency situations when you dont care about the safe recovery of the aircraft, you can setup the catapault launcher anywhere. Several companies and the army are also looking into development of VTOL systems like Jump 20 and Nightstalker that shrink the launch and recovery footprint even smaller.

I'm no expert on that topic but as recon/surveillence/strike are more common capabilities needed at the division-level, a dedicated EW fixed-wing UAS would almost certainly be exclusive to echelon above division (USASOC/INSOC). And if a good enough effect can be achieved with a pod rather than a whole new air frame, which would only have a small number in service due to its niche-ness, that seems like the better option

Fun fact : machines like these are also the reason why A-10 Warthog is getting retired with no real replacement. Do have a love for drone tech. We can see anywhere we want on earth with satellites, and kill anywhere with missiles. But not every little mission needs the expense of our big toys so thats were drones come in. They can't easily take out massive targets but you don't need them to. Just using them for the small things that need small support. I see them as the military version of dollar store warfare. Like how you wouldn't deploy a swat team to take down every robber you don't need the big toys for every little mission.

The Gray Eagle is an unmanned drone that was designed for a more civilized time. The fact of the matter is that MQ-9s, TB2's, etc.and other larger UAVs are only capable of operating against actors without the ability to detect and intercept larger UAVs. Otherwise the Reaper drone is way too easy to spot and eliminate. It's "stealth" capabilities are really just the fact that it is hard. to see with the naked eye because it flys so high, on a radar screen they are seen as clear as day. So as long as the U.S. keeps picking fights with goat herders in remote mountain ranges (so brave) then the MQ-9 is still a relevant weapons platform. If the US ever finds itself in symmetric warfare, they will lose MQ-9s at an unsustainable rate if they use them the same way they do in Afghanistan and Iraq, because replenishment for such large drones is way harder. Much like how Ukraine touted the early use of TB2s during the early days on the 2022 invasion, but ever since then the TB2 has been relegated to deep defensive surveillance well behind the frontline safe from Russian air defense. Lots of video evidence of MQ9s getting shot down in the Middle East and Africa, with fairly dated anti air weaponry. The Russian equivalent to the MQ-9 in terms of surveillance would be the Orlan-10, which is way smaller and infinitely more expendable. Of course the Orlan doesn't have a weapons platform itself, it's still capable of sending real time targeting data to artillery and nearby Lancet drones. This is the same Orlan-10 that had the Canon DSLR camera for optics and an empty Aquafina water bottle for a gas tank. As always the difference in military philosophy between the East which prioritizes ruthless efficiency, as opposed to the West which seemingly prioritizes having the singular most powerful and capable weapons platform, with little regard for manufacturing cost or replenishment capabilities.

Once Ukraine establishes Air Superiority (and i know it might not be any time soon) I hope we will supply them with at least a few Grey Eagles, i mean yes i know they are also building a Bayraktar factory in Ukraine too but you can never have enough drones (as long as they are not all acting autonomously and are all armed, then you can have too many at times)!
