I theorize that Jax was once a gamer & hacker before he ended up in the Circus, and found a way to manipulate gaps in the coding that makes up the Circus' World(which would be how he has keys to many places throughout the Circus), and he acts like such a jerk cause to him this whole thing is all just one big never ending game where no one can actually die, so he's free to go all out on everyone all the time, but he doesn't want to reveal too much about what he's aware of or can do just yet, hence the whole keeping mysterious thing he does.

Well it's not like he has Full control over the game like Caine does or anything of the sort, and since he did say "I want to keep the mystery alive", even if he could break free he doesn't want to reveal How he could to the others, I mean it's one thing to steal a key from Ragatha in Ep.2, but another to avoid glitching out by getting touched by an abstraction in Ep.1, if he can't find a gap in the coding he can't hack it, any experienced gamer knows that the wrong cheat code could cause the whole game to crash, and if you're trapped inside a game, you Definitely want to avoid doing That.

I feel like Jax is slowly gonna become more alone and different throughout the episodes. When he was tied up, he started to get frustrated because he couldn’t mess around with people .
