If our customer sets thermostat to emergency heat, normally W and G get energized. I always connect my blower relay to the G terminal, so that the blower energizes on all three...norm heat, emerg heat and cool modes. During em heat, the contactors will close, but on American Standard and Trane heat kits, the blower is not energized through the contactor. Unlike many other brands out there that are wired to bring on the blower through the heat sequencer.

I like to put rubber cushion's between the air hander and the blocks. The door panel is much easy to get off. But American Standard unit is hard to beat! But, I would use the green wire ( fan )on the thermostat on the relay. The way you wire it the indoor motor will not run on a heat pump when you put it on emergency heat. Am I missing something?

This is a good time to clean the blower wheel. Oftentimes the dirt buildup on the vanes actually becomes convex, and destroys the air-moving capability of the wheel. I often had to use a screwdriver to scrape the vanes before hosing it off.

Taddy, thanks for the video. It was well explained, and was very helpful. You initially said you were going to use two relays (2:03). You then changed, and said you would only use one relay (12:07). At the end of the video, you showed two relays were mounted (15:06). There was no explanation as to how the heating portion was wired using the second relay. I know you used another motor speed wire. Is the rest of the heater wiring using the relay the same, except we use the white wire? Thank you very much. Keep the videos coming!!

Thanks for your response. I had a similar situation adding AC to an old (standing pilot) furnace. We used a 90 380 to control the condenser and heater. NO (2 and 4) when to the condenser and NC (5 and 6) was for the heat circuit. G was not used. If G was added, would need another 90 380? Would the wiring look like: The second relay, G and C to the 24v coil (1 and 3). On the switching side, NO to NO on the other relay. When the sub base fan switch is on, it will send 24V to the second relay and closes both NO switching relays and the indoor fan would turn on. Is that correct? I hope I explained it well.

Tad - Great video...and now I'm hoping you can help. I have an obsolete Heil programmable speed control motor (230V, 1/2 hp, 1250 RPM/Var, 2.0amp) in my heat pump air handler. Worse, instead of a capacitor, it has an equally-obsolete control module (Google "AA20970" and you can see one...out of stock). The motor itself has a label that says, "If replacing with a permanent split capacitor motor, the motor voltage must match the unite line voltage and must not be connected to the speed control." So, my thought, get a PSC motor...but how do I interface it with the circuit controller (Texas Instruments 26FC-2) so it will work with my Honeywell Zone Controllers? Augh! Too many wires!! Of course, the tech that came to the house was at a loss; and recommended...you guessed it...full system replacement--for a mere $10,000 to $12,000....

Don’t use a chisel on the end of the shaft. You’ll deform it and never get it out. If you don’t have a squirrel-cage shaft puller, either keep sanding and soaking in penetrating oil(Rust Buster works great), or use a pin punch close to the size of the shaft.
