Here in California where people burn gas fireplaces all year long, the cause of flames going out is usually due to a dirty or weak thermopile. Otherwise known as a pilot generator. Or a millivolt generator. Anything over 375 is good, 250 is gettin lo, and 150 mv I think is too weak. 450 is like new.

Great video. Not sure that is my issue as my pilot light never goes out. The fire is burning, it will get smaller and smaller (usually over 10 seconds of slowly getting smaller) then goes out, and after 2 or 3 seconds comes back full flame. Then it might go for 10-15 minutes to an hour, no issue. Then chokes out again.

Good info thanks very much. Question: ? I just replaced the 30,000 BTU unvented LP eater in my pole barn. If I turn it all the way up it should stay burning, but it shuts off after certain amount of time (the old one didn’t do that) (same model heater) I think the gas valve went bad and it was 8 yrs old so I replaced the heater. However I think the new model has a low oxygen sensor somewhere. Could that be causing this heater to shut off? I mean the building is 32 x 40 with 10 foot ceilings and there’s no way the building is running out of air. Even though it’s well insulated the garage doors aren’t sealed very well. Any insight on this? Thank you

I have a gas fireplace “the Appalachian stove uv-3800”. I bought my townhouse 4yrs ago. The fireplace has never worked. Pilot will light and the fireplace will light but everything cuts out a few minutes later. I’ve sanded the TC and it would stay lit slightly longer after doing that but will still eventually cut out. Im not sure how to tell if the TC is adjusted/in the pilot flame properly or not. Or if the flame is correct or not. If that makes sense. I’m wanting to start using my fireplace during the winter. My neighbor does hvac and has a little experience with gas fireplaces. He says the tc isn’t the issue. But by my research to me it seem like that is the issue. Any help would be much appreciated. I’m located in North Carolina! Thanks.

My pilot light never goes out but my fireplace will randomly shut off or not turn on when I flip the switch. I replaced the switch on the wall thinking that was the issue. It didn’t fix the problem. I would override the wall switch by using an on off switch at the base of the fireplace. That worked for a while. Now it’s very random whether or not either switch will work. Any ideas?

Hello, my name is Anthony. I have a Majestic fireplace that last year. I shut off the pilot light for the summer time. uperiod. Up until this time, the fireplace worked substantially. but next winner. I lit the pilot and attempted to turn it on and as soon as I. Switched the pilot to on the flame shut off. I reached out to a local company which Assured me it was the thermal couple and I replaced it. it still did not work. The company is now saying it's the whole valve and it will be around a $1000 to replace. any chance it could be the pinhole clogged with dust that you are talking about and if so, any chance you could walk me through. Cleaning up? It's a majestic. I will send the model number in another message to follow this one. Thank you for your time happy thanksgiving

the thermocouple/thermopile DOES NOT send an electrical "signal!" it sends voltage (millivolts) real voltage that powers a coil creating a magnet
@TaddyDigest10 ай бұрын
An electrical signal is a voltage or current which conveys information, usually it means a voltage. The term can be used for any voltage or current in a circuit. from a battery or regulated power supply, this is ideal for electronic circuits. from a smoothed power supply, this is suitable for some electronics.

Great video. Can you explain what is the purpose of the thermopile compared to the Thermo couple? In my case, the pilot stays lit, but i have the impression the thermopile isn't giving a strong enough signal to light the main flame. Can it be related?
@stephenremillard9462 Жыл бұрын
Ok I documented myself and apparently the thermocouple sends a signal for the pilot light valve only. The thermopile on the other hand sends the signal for the main burner valve.
@donaldallen743 Жыл бұрын
Can you find them in cold water heaters?😂😂😂😂
@RobertTuck-vo8cw Жыл бұрын
I have never seen a gas flame do what was happening in the first part of the video. It would have to be a surge in the gas valve or regulator. A bad TC on a gas valve will cause the pilot to not stay on. I believe that you were playing with the remote.
@tech5298 Жыл бұрын
I remember discovering the remote when first working on one. The owner simply didn’t tell me. I was looking at a mysterious black box with t-stat size wires. Couldn’t figure it out. Then later during diagnosis I looked at it hard, saw it took four c cell batteries, and they were dead. Simple switch on it turned it to manual. I think hers actually did run on the thermocouple, and not the usual thermopile that I see with most heaters. Hey, one tech to another. Did you happen to see the instructions that he showed briefly right at the end of the video? Did you notice how the pilot burner head had two different igniters, a thermocouple, and a thermopile attached to it. Man, I just couldn’t get my head wrapped around it. Anyway, I was just wondering what your thoughts were on it?? 🎃

Fine video, I like the wife in the background.. but more info & less talk would be much quicker/better for viewers.. No Hate meant, ok bro.. but the banner was unnecessary... >Thermocouples are a single junction of two metals. They get hot, produce a voltage or "potential" >thermopiles or "generators" are simply several thermo couples wired together for more amps.. Like big batteries instead of little batteries.. Same voltage, more power.. >Low flame = less voltage, clean pilot hole or adj flame.. >check hi-temp limit >check ohms at pilot coil & gas valve coil.. Stay warm ya'll--
