I am 66yrs old and have been a practising martial artist and Yoga student since I was 18yrs old. I did WTF TKD for 15yrs or so reaching 3rd dan. I also did many years of Wing Chun and currently practice Shotokan in the evenings and a 1hr Yoga sequence every morning, I lived for 20yrs in India and learned Hatha Yoga there. I have to say I got more flexible through the Yoga than through TKD style bounce stretches. Also, WTF rules are no good for street defence, being unable to strike the face, I chose TKD to get fit, Wing Chun had already taught me how to defend myself!

This was great. The "King" position. Already a great way of counter-attacking. This double kick doesn't seem easy to do but is amazing. But the control of the match is the most important. Giving the opponent an illusion of attack only to cause a reaction (like a trigger) and then strike back.

Thank-you Carl and Aaron @Ginger Ninja Trickster for putting this very useful and informative breakdowns of counter back / spinning kicks. For the going out on the front side of the opponent by 130 degrees to avoid a possible spinning kick, with turning kick, a taller person might be able to do. But for a shorter person, what would you recommend? I can think of sliding in turning kick counter or front kick to close the distance. The sliding in 45 or 30 degrees in is most effective I gather on the blind side. Again thanks for the work for this video. Keep it up!

Great video for taekwondo. My goal will always be to get to the side or back, less damage can be done from there, or get the opponent to the floor again to remove the force people can generate stading up using the biggest muscles !

Problem is the correct time to do a spinning kick is when you are countering your apponents kick meaning the shift of weight was not in his favor therefore your chance of connecting your spinning kick will be very good

Off topic but as a sports scientist and just general experience, do smaller guys have an advantage in doing spinning back kicks?. In my case started training, I'm tall (ended up 6 foot and a bit) and there were a bunch of us that started at the same time, and the guys who were 5'5 - 5'6 just seemed to have a natural affinity for it and were doing decent jumping back kicks by the time they were green tips or green belts while the taller students were awkward with the moves (and it wasn't just better coordination, I could nail them with round houses/turning kicks and side kicks). But the shorter guys were just better at the spinning jumping moves. In fact one was better at a jumping spinning back kick than a particular brown belt who was 6'5 and had lethal sidekicks that you couldn't even knock away when he stood there holding the kick and he let you try. Is it biomechanics? Tae Kwon Do was developed in Korea before a Western diet intruded, so the average height of the developers of the style would have been around the 5'5 mark. Do different heights have different natural proficiencies with particular techniques? Of course intense training can overcome that, you're very tall and have amazing spinning kicks, but did it take more effort to get that level of skill than the shorter practitioner?
