Now you understand why Taemin and his og group SHINee are LEGENDS. This is what happens when Taemin has the vision and is the actual co-producer & director of his own MVs. His is an extremely detail-oriented person. He is not just a pretty face who can sing and dance. He can do it all. BTW: There is a dance practice for this. "IDEA" is the title track of Act 2 of NGDA Album: This is the continuation of Act 1 and sister song to "Criminal". It depicts the rebirth/resurrection of Taemin with a new Ego. The concept for this song/album is....wait for it....Plato's philosophical Theory of Forms, (allegory of The Cave) hence the Greek pronunciation of the word "Idea" and "Messiah". What makes Taemin, TAEMIN? Can he achieve perfection? The present ego thinks he's the one who can achieve perfection without any outside influence; no need for a new ego. The newly-emerging ego thinks maybe perfection on his own can't be achieved without the help of a greater power outside himself (part of Plato's Forms Theory). This realization creates even more conflict. As a devout Catholic, this theory fits in perfectly with Taemin's Christian worldview. So with "IDEA" you have the climactic battle between the two competing egos inside Taemin's head that were initially introduced in "Criminal". In the end, Taemin's new ego breaks out of that prison (Hell) in his mind to take over. The old IDEA of Taemin is killed and shaken off, and a new, enlightened IDEA of Taemin (Heaven) has begun. This is perfectly illustrated through the lyrics and the imagery of the MV. I recommend you also react to his "Want" MV. The entire MV basically retells the story of Genesis 3 with a sprinkling of the salvation message at the end. However, if you don't subscribe to that worldview, you will get a story of temptation with Taemin being the ultimate tempter. Either way, the visuals are great and the lyrics....well, let's just say they're "hot..hot"! Taemin is produces art with his music and only ups the ante with each comeback. Now that his SHINee brothers have returned from the military, they are dropping a new album and comeback on 2/22/21. I hope you will check out the title track. Taemin promises it will be something they have never done before - which is a challenge since they've been together for 16 years and performing together for 14.

Taemin is one of the most popular solo artists, as well as the youngest member of the legendary Kpop group SHINee. He debuted as a solo artist in 2014 and "Idea" is part of his 3rd Korean solo album called Never Gonna Dance Again. It is part of a trilogy which started with his prologue "2 Kids," and continued with "Criminal" which is part of Act 1 of the album. "Idea" is part of Act 2 of the album and it brings the whole concept full circle. As Taemin said in an interview: "The two acts put together tell a story. '2 Kids’ is about growing pains and depicts the story prior to the story in the album. You can think of '2 Kids' as a teaser before the movie called 'Never Gonna Dance Again.' Act 1 shows a new side of me. I think it’ll be something you’ve never seen in K-pop before. And Act 2 is the end-all-be-all. It’s the ultimate level of intensity. Never Gonna Dance Again’ was originally the name of the concept. Because it doesn’t make sense for me to stop dancing. But I wanted to give a sense of rebellion with the irony of the title.” Some have said, and I have to agree, that "Idea" is a metaphor for the way Taemin sees his career. He loves what he does, almost to the point of obsession -- like "my messiah" he is drawn to it and can't help worship it -- he practically needs to dance and perform to survive. But, at the same time, it pretty much controls his life and living as an Idol means everything he does is done in the public eye and he will never be able to live a normal life -- his "dangerous dream" that is engulfing him and "swallowing him" up. The stress and constant demand for perfection he feels may be slowly "Killing me softly," etc. I particularly like the verse in "Idea" that says, "The blue light, When you and I face each other, Stained in it, All one's feelings, It's an infinite range, In my world, Most dazzling,The absolute value of you, My my IDEA." These lines seem to be talking about Taemin's fans. SHINee's fan color is pearl aqua blue, so the blue light you see in the MV and the blue light he talks about in the lyrics of "Idea," makes me think he is referring to the impact and influence the fans have had on everything he has done in his career. And although he loves and appreciates us, it has not come without a few sacrifices and negative aspects as well. The mutual love and respect between Taemin and the fans also has added a lot of extra pressure on him because he always wants to give people his absolute best and he is constantly trying to live up to an impossible standard of self-imposed flawlessness. So with every release from this album, the concept was designed to be darker than the last. In "2 Kids" he was emotionally and physically beating himself up with regrets and in "Criminal" he was living in a toxic relationship and being brainwashed to the point he was suffering from stockholm syndrome; he fell in love with the person/criminal (or thing -- i.e. his career) who is essentially inflicting all the pain and suffering on him. So, in other words, even though you are being abused by that person (possibly a metaphor for the pressure he is creating for himself as he pushes himself in his pursuit of perfection) he still can't help but love the criminal (i.e. his career) and allow them/it to continue to cause him to suffer, etc. :D "Idea" takes the theme one step further, and says that even though it was my idea and my plan to live this life, nothing comes without a price, and because of that self-inflicted need to be flawless, any chance of being average or living a regular life is pretty much dead. Taemin has sacrificed everything to become the magnificent and unique performer and person that we know him as today. But there really is no one that pushes him or holds him to a higher standard then himself. Taemin has said that he really has never taken a true vacation since he was a trainee -- he started with SM Entertainment when he was around 11 years old -- and he doesn't know what to do if he isn't constantly working and training. The thing that he hates the most is when people assume he has had it easy because he is part of a big and powerful company and he is so naturally talented. As he has said, there has never been anything that has come easy to him and he has only gotten to where he is today because he has worked hard to accomplish everything. He is constantly pushing himself to become the best of the best in everything he does. Fun fact: The female voice you hear in "Idea " is BoA. She is a solo artist also under SM Entertainment, and she is Taemin's highly respected senior who debuted with SM in 2000 at the age of 13 and, now after 20 years, she is known as one of the senior-most members of the industry. BoA is legend. To see what kind of influence BoA has had on the industry and why it is so fitting that she was included on this song, check out her recent "202020" documentary. Taemin is just one of those performers that leaves you speechless every time he steps on stage. He was born to be a performer and that is one of the reasons why he has become known as the Korean Michael Jackson. That is also why, as one of the top two dancers in the industry, he was made a member of SuperM. (Kai from EXO -- Taemin's best friend since they were trainees, who is also under SM Entertainment, as well as a member of SuperM -- is the other top dancer.) Taemin is an Idol of Idols and a legend of legends. And the title of the industry's BEST dancer isn't just a fan's opinion but it's a widely agreed upon title bestowed on both Taemin and Kai by their peers and the industry as a whole. There is literally no one considered better than them. If you are impressed with Taemin's dancing, just wait until you see his dance practice video for "Idea." You will be even more blown away. As I said, Taemin is on a whole other level. Taemin's choreography is very much influenced by him. Although he has input in almost everything he does, he has choreographers that come up with the choreography for most of his dances and he then infuses it with his own ideas and style and makes it uniquely his. The way Taemin dances is just the way he moves. His movements are effortless. If you watch Taemin dance more, you will see that no matter who choreographs the dance, it will always be very Taemin-like. Many choreographers who have worked with him over the years have said that, with Taemin you can't help but allow him to move in whatever way his body takes him. Taemin is art in every sense of the word. :D Taemin's style of dance can't be defined. As he has said, he has worked his entire career to create a style of dance that is unlike anything in the Kpop industry. And I would argue that that now extends to the entire industry of dance. Taemin started out as a self-taught popper and locker without any dance training, and, even then, as a trainee it was clear his skills as a dancer went far beyond the average dancer. Over the years, as you see with "Idea," he has infused those popping and locking skills into his now more contemporary style of dance. But, when it comes to dancing, he can do it all and there is no one better at it than him. Taemin's talents are one reason why SHINee are one of the top groups in the industry and why they have such legendary status. SHINee is made up of some of the absolute best singers, dancers and performers in the entire industry. With more than 12 years since their debut, they still command one of the top spots. When Taemin debuted in 2008 as part of SHINee he was only 14 years old and, yet, he was already known as one of the best dancers in the industry, and he has only gotten more magnificent over the years. Now after 12 years Taemin is still one of the youngest in many Kpop circles (he is only 27) and, yet, he often has the most seniority and experience. When on stage, Taemin can turn his sexy, sensual side up to 3,000 and he become the most powerful and magnificent performer that command the stage. But the minute he step off the stage he becomes quiet and shy and he blushes when people compliment him for his looks or performance. When not on stage, Taemin is known for being sort of innocent and kind of naive and a little ditsy, as only the maknae (youngest member) of a group can get away with -- he is 2 to 4 years younger than the rest of the SHINee members and he plays up being the baby when he is around them, and they pretty much will do anything he asks. He knows how to be cute when he wants something, but he hates it when someone asks him to be cute. LOL. SHINee are a 5 member group that is known for their live vocals and amazing dancing. They are known as CD-quality singers because they sound just as good live, if not better, than they do recorded. SHINee always sings live. The ONLY thing they are not good at is lip syncing so they avoid it at all costs, so when you hear SHINee singing 95% of the time it will be live. They have trained their entire career to be able to sing live for 3+ hours straight and always sound flawless while performing extremely complex choreography the whole time. SHINee is the group that really set the standard when it comes to live performances. It's literally known as the SHINee standard and it's what all other groups work to reach.

The female voice who sang "Killing me softly" is another artist from SM Entertainment called BoA! She's a solo artist that has been in the industry for 20 years! The backstory: When they were recording "Idea", Taemin was supposed to sing that part, but he was unsatisfied with how he sounded and said he couldn't get the feeling of it right.. so he jokingly offer BoA to feature in and sing that killing part, and to his surprise, she agreed! Thanks for checking out Taemin! Taemin is a great artist. He has great lyricism, dancing, stage presence...etc. He is a bit of a perfectionist and will often do things over and over until he's "happy with them." He also will often add artistic elements and themes to his M/V's/stages and make them more interesting. You should definitely check out more of his music. Want, Move, and Two Kids would would be good choices. An older M/V that I enjoy is sayonara hitori (the m/v gives me video game/ chinese fantasy drama vives).

Taemin debuted at the age of 14 with SHINee. Being the youngest, his SHINee hyungs practically raised him and helped in training him especially vocals. Hope you can check them out too - their vocals and choreo are insane and they have a lot of epic live performances such as Stranger, Excuse Me Miss, Sherlock and Everybody. This one is something else. A banger and a thinker at the same time. Taemin, for his lyrics and aesthetics, draws inspiration from philosophy for Idea, namely, Plato's theory of identity. Plato posits that we only percieve superficial traits of the world around us, but, that its true 'ideal" form is far more complex. Taemin applies that idea to his own identity as he searches for his true, ideal self. That's why you see other dancers fall away from him, as if he's shedding his many layers and shadows to reveal his true self in the ending scene. Also, those shadows are a reference to the "Allegory of The Cave", in which Plato, trying to explain how one obtains knowledge and how important lived experience is to obtaining knowledge creates this metaphor about two men being chained in a cave their entire lives and only ever seeing shadows of people as they walk past the cave on the walls of the cave. He says that "they would not know of the true nature of humans and would only assume that they live in the world of shadows." It's the goal of philosophy to get out of the cave and explore the world for what it truly is. That's why he also included the "beautiful silhouettes" line. His pronunciation of "Idea" is Greek.
