I got into this rabbit hole because I’m trying to understand what little keyboard instrument to pair with my iPad Pro to properly give online lesson during the pandemics... and now it’s three days that I’m consuming every video out there about midi controllers. Purchased the minilab mkII a few weeks ago, and it is such a solid controller. Feels and looks amazing, probably the nicest piece of hardware on my desk! For someone new to learning and making music the included software is such a great starting off point. Ableton Live Lite is great as everyone knows, but realistically DAWs seem plentiful at literally every price point. Analog Lab Lite was the real value for me, there are so many instruments perfectly set up for the controller and extremely easy to find. I honestly think that the minilab is the best option for absolute beginners for that reason.

This is a great video . Based off of this video I went ahead with the Akai mini's older brother the MPK 249 . My reason is one, my fingers are bigger so "Mini" keys aren't in my favor . Two, I like the option of having more than 8 pads for drum programming since I like to jam "live" on pads . Three, having more faders available at one time will help with automation for me . I thank to thank you for detailed information you provided . It made my decision a solid one .

I gotta get myself a laptop so i can take my stuff with me out in nature. I already got both the "Electribe 2" synth and sampler, but they are a bit too limiting on their own IMO, and a laptop is by far the most versatile portable option for making the electibes fun to work with. I also got the Akai "MPD 218" and the Novation "Launch Control XL", which i also think are really nice options for laptops. I think the 8x2 pad layout on the electribes are really good together with the different "scales", so you get one octave (+ the first note in the next octave) on each row. Trying to make melodies on a 4x4 pad layout with a standard "chromatic" scale is very unintuitive IMO...

I bought an APC key 25 back when I first started and tried to use it with logic X, and boy oh boy was it impossible to use. It was after I switched to ableton that I picked it up one day and realized the pads were't for drumming at all and worked perfectly with abelton's session view. This video would've been so helpful back then but I'm glad no one will repeat my mistakes by watching this now. Amazing content as always :D

The Launchkey Mini Mk2 is a fantastic controller for FL Studio, especially if you also use FL Studio Mobile. I haven't found any built-in functions or buttons that only work in Ableton. @SimpleTrax3 жыл бұрын
All the available midi controllers are kind of the same. But I get it, you are supposed to buy separate controller for each software... Redundant. Also, there is a controller called Conspiracy, made by Samson, which is actually good once you map it manually. The other thing that gets on my nerves that knobs have markings, like in the middle, but midi CC messages are 0-127 steps, there is no middle, so the markings are wrong on most devices. If you want a good controller, that is actually accurate, make your own.

Thanks for taking the time to explain all of this! Looking for something to spice up my guitar playing I was wondering if a midi controller could be the right move to add some percussion. My only question is, are there any Midi Controllers that have built in speakers (like a keyboard) with software already installed for acoustic/percussion sounds? It seems like this would exist because that is basically what a keyboard is. I guess I'm just looking for a keyboard with a finger drum pad set up as well. Just seems odd that you don't need to plug your keyboard into a computer for it to have the software it needs but when it becomes a midi controller, suddenly it loses its brain and can't function alone. If anyone has any input, I'd love to hear it.

The problem I had with several midi controllers is that they don't all work with all equipment! I purchased a midi controller that was USB only. So I purchased a popular USB to midi hub. The hub did not recognize that a controller was plugged into it. I contacted the manufacturer of the hub and they were of no use what-so-ever! The USB keyboard worked with my computer, and could do everything I wanted with my DAW, but only with software synths that I used on my computer. What makes this really weird is that the USB light on the hub was red, indicating that there was no USB connection, but the controller is powered by USB and the controller powered up. It just couldn't pass any midi traffic to my Korg! I then purchased another controller, this one had both USB and 5-pin MIDI. I hooked my Korg to the hub using the 5-pin, and hooked my new controller to the USB. The USB hub light lit up and everything worked! And don't get me started on the Midi TRS configurations that every device manufacturer thinks they have a monopoly on!
