I seem to recall that the actor who played Father Dick Byrne (Maurice O'Donoghue) was second choice to play Ted. This role as the nemesis of Ted was a kind of consolation prize. I wonder if the other denizens of Rugged Island Parochial House were also second choices for Dougal, Jack and Mrs Doyle?

The other housekeeper was played by Pauline McLynn as well, she just didn’t have her face made up the same and had a more natural look. The outfit & hair style was the same as Mrs Doyle, but not using the Mrs Doyle expressions or the makeup was enough of a difference for the mirror effect they were going for. The character actually looked more like Pauline than Mrs Doyle.

The game show is a bit of both as well - Wogan having an audience of old people and presenting with a 'why am I even here?' style, and Kelly hosting a daily quiz. I think when you see black face in shows like this, its more...hmm...like they're making fun of the people who are using black face, and calling them out. Obviously Dick Byrne is the kind of person who would think its acceptable to use black face, and we're not exactly supposed to be rooting for him. Given that context, its somewhat different to the original purpose of black face, which was to make fun of black people. Though I understand why it would make some viewers uncomfortable even with the different context. It never personally bothered me, but I never judge anyone it does bother.
@AtheAetheling4 жыл бұрын

The intent of the joke is not to be racist or to mock racists, it's to be absurd. The writers were certainly aware of racial issues in Ireland, and there is a joke in episode mocking the more subtle racism that black people can face. Can't remember the episode but I think it's Mrs Doyle talking to a black priest, praising how strong the faith is in Africa, and the priest replies (with a broad Irish accent) "I wouldn't know, I'm from Donegal". But in this episode the joke is just how silly it is that 3 white Catholic priests would choose to enter a lookalike contest as The Supremes.
@KnightmareUSA3 жыл бұрын
@@teamcreambits A black guy on here who has a patreon has watched the episode and thought it was funny. It makes fun of those in makeup and little else, and that's all it is. The contrast of pale arms and dark makeup was to make them look silly. The choice of act may even be a nod to an artist one of the creators of the show liked. The media (and loudest on social media) may want to rewrite the rule book on what you and all others should deem right or wrong, but opinion and offense will always be individual. "A product of the time". Yes, absolutely. We wouldn't do that "black up" now (I sincerely hope not anyway) but this was made over 20 years ago when this was ... not acceptable even then but was used as satire to shock and produce a laugh (as I said unacceptable now). Whole episodes of classic shows like Fawlty Towers have recently been deleted off well known streaming services for the same reason - language used, even in the '70s which was barely acceptable even then, used for satire. We're deleting culture of the time from our records - a part of our history even though it's now considered very wrong if done today. For the record, I was instrumental in discovering the video tape of the launch night of the BBC's second service - BBC TWO (believed to have never even been recorded at the time due to massive power failures in London that evening... launched in April 1964 (only a year after AMPEX's 2 inch tape video recording system was made available to broadcasters) - the tape was discovered by myself and a colleague in 2003 in a pile of tapes in a forgotten archive in the BBC). The very first words uttered on the channel (due to the first two and a half minutes going out silent due to major technical difficulties would be UTTERLY unacceptable today even though it was a news presenter describing a despicable racial slur uttered by a bus conductress, who called a Pakistani a stinking w...g. But the news reader said it on air, even though he had a look of utter distain doing so! - I have to say I cringed even then when I watched the tape for the first time since it was recoded over 30 years later.... You'll not see this in any online version of this broadcast - the BBC have glossed over another part of our history. For the sake of political correctness.

The blackface bits will be why you couldn't find a good quality video. I believe there was a big outcry a year or two ago about British comedies (or Irish in this case) and their historical use of blackface, which led to channels and streaming services cutting episodes, and in some cases, entire series' from their archive. Little Britain, Bo Selecta, The League of Gentlemen and The Mighty Boosh were the biggest culprits of it's use as far as I know.

@@MysticClaws100 It's true the reactions would be different now, but equally, I think that the way Dick Byrne and co are setup (and indeed Ted and co) is that they are incompetent with the wider world, so something like this would seem OK to them, whereas to the audience it wouldn't. The whole premise of the show is that the Catholic church is completely out of touch with the world.
