Nonstop inbound calls for 8 hours straight with small business owners screaming at you because their phones/internet don't work. Call centers and canvassing jobs turn n burn 3-5 employees a week. Our weird staff dude was a 20-something that invited us all over one night and literally had swords and shields and made his apartment a low-rate renaissance fair. he asked if we wanted to see his capes and we all laughed at him. He quit a few days later. I didn't know anyone who brushed a doll's hair, but there was a guy who would talk to his daughters on the phone and help them fall asleep while there was a California 7/10 attractive coke fiend kneeled in front of him frustrated she has to wait for this phone call to finish before blowing him for blow. I'm so glad I can talk to my best friend and his sidekick that takes half the revenue

Love the service desk story's super high turnover rate, and iv been grinding for 4 years just earning bank doing customer care while essentially just sorting IT problems as quickly as possible tbh I don't take more than 10 minutes nowadays even on the hard ones and I take maybe 20 calls a day so I might get lucky and spend 4 - 5 hours working and the rest is just watching KZbin, playing games, working on other adult life activities like taxes, budgeting and investing tbh it's the best job if you can learn how to get the customer to be your ally not your enemy. - My best tip is always take the side of the person on the phone no matter how wrong, and you'll never have an angry customer again. - also helps to start of and get that going so they are more accepting of advise you give them. - even if they can't do it and you can't do it they leave feeling like they tried and didn't just get spat on and told it's too hard.

That's why you really need to experience some sort of customer service before you do service desk/ Help Desk stuff because alot of it is just making the other person like you while you fix their issues, you can take as long as you need as long as the person thinks good of you and they can see your genuinely trying to help. - the amount of people iv had to train up in my own service desk because there was one good one and the rest relied on him until I went out of my way learnt what I could and taught it to all of my colleagues that didn't know when I asked in the end I don't need any thanks or recognition because we all benefited and it made us better workers in the end never be afraid to help a colleague out - you never know when you'll be needing them.

If you're nice and just let the person talk, most of the time they'll like you even if you can't solve their problem. After about 6 months I had it figured out that probably 90% of the calls would be one of the same 9 or 10 problems (password reset, can you install this program for me, why is my text all big/small in MS Outlook) so I was basically on auto-pilot. I was a huge NFL freak then and would watch condensed replays of that weekend's games all day while taking calls. Either that or playing boomer shooters like Doom. This was early 2010s though so maybe it's different now.

Oh my god, as my parents have gotten older they have somehow lost the ability to properly use a TV remote control despite having used TV remote controls for over 40 years and it drives me nuts. I can totally sympathize with the call center people. Also, listening to Nick describe behavior I consider totally normal as wacky, aberrant, and autistic was a real pick-me-up.

I worked in a call center for 2 years and this is 100% accurate, I straight up had a nervous breakdown and quit.

My best friend who works in a call centre here in india(medical paper work) described it as a tap. Once you login, the water(calls) starts flowing in non-stop and it won't stop ringing till you logout. You need a shot of whiskey every night to flush the days crap out. People who don't talk will not be able to handle this job.

Had a similar call center job. It was alright before the lockdowns, but once I started working from home it became way too gruelling. I didn't get the catharsis of complaining about all the retards who called in anymore. I had to quit. Couldn't hold out until WFH ended.
