furreal. i bought our tickets for edinburgh n1 in august of 2023 assuming, like most people, that we were going to see the same eras tour everyone else had. i’m SO happy that we weren’t able to go to any other show before then 😂 between TTPD getting added to the setlist, being the show where the TTPD gloves idea was born because of her frozen claw hand, and her finally getting to see an audience proposal because the sun set so late it was just an unforgettable experience.

This is such a heartbreaking song. It’s talked about a lot in the fandom that Matty is the worst, and this song is the perfect example of why. Cause she has a bunch of breakup songs of course, but this is another level of brutal. She calls him evil basically. He’s not just a bad boyfriend. He manipulated her at her lowest point, he told her, after her relationship of six years ended because her ex didn’t want to get married to her, that he did want did want marriage and kids with her, the whole world absolutely hated her for dating him, everybody was calling her racist and bigoted and disgusting, but she was willing to endure it all because she thought he loved her (and she still gets criticised for dating him daily). And then he just got tired (or scared of the hate, like a coward) and threw her away basically. That’s just another level of evil. And you can tell in this song that’s exactly what she thinks of him, cause I don’t think I’ve ever heard her sound so genuinely angry.

Even though he left her, she doesn’t realize she dodged a bullet. She’s got Travis now. I understand what she went through especially after a long relationship and break up and someone like that sweeps in, you don’t realize it at the moment but it could feel like everything that you ever wanted. Just to destroy you. I hope this was cathartic for her. It definitely helps me. I hope she does come out with a 10 minute version. But he doesn’t deserve that. She would have to do it for herself to help her heal.

For me, ending where it does at the end of her most epic bridge, shes come to the end of her going over and over the situation to try and understand it. The verses are all about how she was treated, the bridge is about her thoughts on it and she's ending by saying "im done, I'm moving on". So I wouldnt want a longer song because it ends at her moving on. This is kind of reflected at the Eras tour how this experience broke her down and then she rebuilds herself. Definitely recommend checking out the Eras tour performance!

I just started listening to Taylor about 7 months ago so I don't know alot about her relationships but this is what another youtuber said about who this song is about. "Matty Healy. British lead singer in the band “The 1975”. They were rumored to be together in 2014. They stayed in touch since then. Confessing, sharing and connecting with each other. He said she was the American Girl Love of his life to her millions of times, that they were going to get married and start a family. She was in a long term relationship with Joe Alwyn (British actor) from 2016-2023. He was chronically depressed and was bringing her down and not nurturing their relationship. He never wanted to take her out anywhere and she felt hidden and alone. In TTPD “Fresh Out The Slammer”, she’s talking about running to Matty after Joe. She believed all of Matty’s false promises and fake proclamations of true love. As soon as she was officially broken up with Joe, Matty was a totally different guy than who she’d been connecting with for a decade. “Who the F was that guy?” On his stage, his costume is an all black suit that looks like a religious (Jehovah’s Witness) suit, a cigarette and a full bottle of alcohol. Taylor’s crazy fans actually started a PETITION against Matty!! They HATED him. THEY TOLD HER TO BREAK UP WITH HIM AND THEN THEY WENT AFTER HIM TO BREAK UO WITH HER. In “But Daddy I Love Him” is to those CRAZY erratic fans who totally overstepped by telling her who she should or shouldn’t be with. “Daddy” = those crazy fans because they were treating her like a child. You can tell how mad she is in that song. Her tone was PURE ANGER. She basically set some boundaries and said “you don’t have a say on who I date!” When her co-producer/sometimes co-writer, Jack Antonoff, got married, HUNDREDS of unwanted and crazed “fans” showed up to his wedding that Taylor was in. So in “But Daddy I love him” she says “and you can’t come to the wedding” calling out that bad behavior about Jack’s. wedding fiasco, too. A lot of the songs in this huge TTPD album are connected. If it’s written or sung in an angry tone with lots of details = Matty Healy. She says “you hung me on your wall and stabbed me with your push pins”. I think of a world map and he would follow wherever she was touring and would use those thin push pins with the round red head to show where she was in the world. He knew where she was at all times and to her, it showed that he really cared about her. It could be posters of her, but stabbed me with your push pins (plural) means that it was continuous, like my world map theory. She had just started her Era’s world tour that March before they got together. So that would also make sense for the map. She had plenty of concerts over the decade, so she’d have seen the map of him watching where she was. Then to treat her so badly after they were finally together was just so sickening and truly heartbreaking for her."

Taylor is masterful at taking traditional songwriting “rules” and turning them on their head!! As others said, you need to see the live version and her costuming and staging.
