Ren has talked about doing a "Black Mirror" type anthology series much like this, but probably more complex. Apparently he and Sam, the guy who did the video work on this, have at least written, but perhaps filmed the first episode as an example of what the series could be. (He mentioned it in a live chat and I can't remember if he said if it is finished.) As Ren's reputation rises, I hope outfits like Netflix take note.

IMHO the "Tale of Jenny and Screech and Violet's Tale" is a Three Act Shakespearian Tragedy, in the style of the wondering minstrel bard. Ren has self identified his music as bard core, so that is confirmed. The use of music as interlude is an ancient technique. This is a use of music; that goes right back through the wondering minstrel bards of the middle ages. The works of Chaucer sung in the Wife of Bath's ale house. And back to the Dark Ages of Anglo Saxon epic poetry of Beowulf, on through the Greek Homeric tales of The Iliad and The Odyssey and the beginning of the Choir. As Ren shows the music acts: in part as interlude/intro as well as melodic emphasis and sound effects for the story. This form of story telling probably goes all the way back to Ugg twanging his Bow to woo the Chiefs Daughter. Or to complain about the Chief stealing the meat from his hunt, at the hut of the local Widow Ale Wife, where he and others would congregate to let off steam and tell tales of epic hunts. And then perhaps to draw on the local cave walls, the tale of their hunt while singing acting and dancing out their day. And even to this day you see the graffiti on the walls as Ren acts out and performs "The Tales." As a sound engineer I spotted Ren's use of locational reverb as found sound. Something a stone age performer shaman would recognise and that has been shown to have occurred in ancient megalithic architecture and among the few still existing hunter gatherer societies that are studied by anthropologists today. They also got lucky with the Seagulls in part of the song which then was deliberately left in and emphasized in the mix. I think that what was done in the tales calls to that ancient genetic heritage we all have. All of it indicates the intellectual level of the performance production in this piece that makes it true art.
@Cunning.Stunt.7778 ай бұрын
Wow you hit the nail on the head! However, the gulls (seagulls) were probably infuriating to ren. As they are supposed to be in London. All 3 tragedies in the tales mention London City specifically several times. Gulls are seaside birds (he filmed all three tales in Brighton a Coastal Town) Pigeons are the birds of the old smoke

So some additional information for you. 1) regarding the views, bear in mind Jenny's Tale, Screech's Tale and Violet's Tale were all originally (and I think still are) individual videos, because they were not all released at once. Jenny's Tale was released first in 2019 and then Screech's Tale about 6 months later. Violet's Tale wasn't released until 2022. It was probably intended that he would do it in 2020, but then the world shut down, and because he was going to Canada when it opened back up, for treatment, he had a lot of videos he wanted to record so that he could still release stuff he had previously recorded, while he was in Canada getting the treatment. Now on to the actual story - Now that you know the twist, you become aware that Jenny's age was never mentioned in the song, but now you know what it is. So now you see Jenny's story in a new light, a 14 year old girl, walking the streets at night (like she had a thousand times before) - in her high heeled shoes. Screech refers to slicing the rosy off her cheeks - which is an old-timey reference to ladies of the night, wearing rouge. So it's pretty apparent at this point that Jenny the 14 year old girl, is working the streets at night. Further backed up by Screech in his own story suggesting that he had attacked a lady - he didn't say he attacked a girl, so he obviously thought she was much older than she really was. This is an epic story of intergenerational abuse. And it is helpful to know that in the UK when Violet moved at - at 16 and was given a council flat, that doesn't happen - because of the major housing shortage in the UK - UNLESS she was already pregnant when she moved out, which means she would already have been pregnant when she met Stevie, and is probably why Stevie kept saying she was a liar. Jenny and Screech's father, is likely to be Violet's father, rather than Stevie. Great reaction guys, I hope I added some context. You might like to know that if you search KZbin you will find a 360 degree live performance of The Tales in front of an audience, who all know the words. It's pretty fun to watch, especially when a very young kid is happily screaming away at the "come on then you fucking cunts, let's fucking have you then" line.

This...💯

So... fun fact on Jenny's Tale: although inspired by the newspaper story of a prostitute being murdered by a kid in his early teens, Jenny herself was *NOT* written to be one. Per Ren himself, "Jenny grew up quite normal, and James had an abusive father" (stated in Discord on 7/28/2022), and that Jenny & Screech were meant to be opposites that fit together like Yin and Yang.
@AndrewJonesMcGuire8 ай бұрын
@@dropbarracuda grew up quite normal may have been the intention sure, but the lyrics don't match that "she knew these streets because she'd walked them about a thousand times before, she wanted to escape" 14 year old girls who are in a loving family don't walk the streets at night alone, and they definitely don't indicate that they want to escape.
@dropbarracuda8 ай бұрын
@AndrewJonesMcGuire (SPOILERS) actually, I didn't want to pull out this factoid, but since you want to go on this speculative, disproven narrative (😉), the official, latest word from Ren on 07/29/2022 is this (this also clears up a bit surrounding the different takes on Jenny and Screech's father): "Jenny is actually a cyborg who was artificially inseminated into the womb, and Screech was sent from the future disguised as Arnold [Schwarzenegger] to destroy her."

Awww, watching the three of you absolutely captivated by every second of this video was also a treat, even if you weren't doing a lot of pausing to share your thoughts. It felt reverent, from this side of the screen. I don't ever mind reactors pausing a whole bunch because I'm there for their reaction and if they want to add a lot of words to their reaction, I'm definitely here for that (I'm always sad if I see the runtime of a reaction video isn't much longer than the runtime of Ren's video). He puts layers upon layers in this story. You can peel back each interpretation and find deeper meanings to each phrase almost. Like violet was a 14 year old prostitute. Screech's friend, Patrick, was cheating with Screech's girlfriend. Violet was already pregnant when she met Stevie. By her father. In London, to get a flat on welfare at 16, there would need to be extenuating circumstantes. Like emancipation because she was pregnant and abused. That's why Stevie called her a slut and a liar. She likely wouldn't tell him who the father of her babies was. And Jenny and Screech, born on the same day, died on the same day one street apart. Generational violence and consequences of nature vs nurture in poverty in a 13 minute nutshell... or maybe onion would be a better analogy. Ren is absolutely one-of-a-kind.

Great reaction and a new subscriber here! Some more info I read in other comments or saw in some Ren interiews/shorts: Patrick was not at home because he was busy with Screech's girlfriend. "It's such a shame" is a quote of the officer who shot Screech stated in the article which inspired Ren for those tales. Jenny took over the silent traits of her mother and Screech the violent traits of his father. They had to film one of the tales again, because one of the neighbours told him to shut up screaming in the middle of the night, but was cool with it after they explained they're shooting a video. I read different explanations for the sound shortly before Ren is using the guitar as a gun: either it's his zipper of the jacket hitting the guitar (unintentionally) or he dropped an empty ammunition cartridge in the body of the guitar (intentionally)... Cheers from Munich, Germany

I could write a book on just about every Ren song... These are a few things I like to mention sometimes. Jenny's Tale you have to ask yourself what was a 14 year old girl wearing heels and "rosy cheeks" doing at night on a road "she walked a 1000 times before". At the start of Screech's Tale, Ren starts the song by saying, "A story it starts at the end". Patrick was "missing" and Screech's GF was "Busy" because they were together. Then at the end as Ren does so often he brings it full circle and says, "A story it ends at the start" . Violate Tale - I LOVE the guitar rifts throughout the ENTIRE song. Ren so often does, he plays the part of Violate here on the bed after the rifts... (Violate waking up looking around confused as to how she got here and where is here?) With haunting/eerie hymns he sets the stage. Many catch the rewind . MANY more miss the speeding back up to real time when Ren/Violate wakes up on the table (After the fight between her and Stevie as he starts walking away). Lastly, Violet moved out at 16 into a flat paid by a "welfare scheme". It is logical to think that violet was already pregnant by this time. A teenage runaway might have a chance at being a beneficiary of this but a pregnant teenage runaway certainly has the qualifications to be granted this benefit. This was before she met Stevie who most would assume was the father of Jenny and Screech. If what was speculated was true, Stevie did some maths and figured that the numbers didn't add up, the baby wasn't his. He beats up Violet and calls her a "slut" which was quite specific when compared to usual cuss words like "bitch" or "cunt". This would also answer as to why Stevie asked "Why're you lying to me, violet?" And would make the slightly off phrase "Do you think I wanna do this, Violet" fit more consistently into the story.

Jennys tale was prompted by a newspaper story and people saying its such a shame then a few months later came Screeches tale then it was nearly 2 years later he released Violets tale tying it all together. Masterpiece. After the final twist comes the shock when you have to rethink your image of Jenny as she is 14 in highheels walking the streets and all that implies.

Ren a un talent supérieur. Ce gars redéfinit les standards de la musique populaire en y intégrant un bagage culturel considérable. Je ne serais pas étonné qu'il soit reconnu largement comme l'un des plus brillants artistes de sa génération.

Hey guys! Loved your reactions. Ren is just amazing and ridiculously talented. I just wanted to let you know that Ren has specifically stated on an interview with Knox Hill that he will not copy strike any reactors (or anyone) for using his music as he is very grateful to reactors for appreciating and sharing his music. Just letting you know, so that you don’t have to keep stopping every so often to avoid get copy striked - because just he’s not going to do that. Didn’t know if you knew or not and I wanted to share the good news. Maybe it can make it a little easier and fun for you. Have have a great day guys!! 🎉☺️
