I've been doing all sorts of martial arts my entire life (muay thai, aikido, karate, judo, jiu jitsu). I went up against a friend who has been training in tai chi, literally, his entire life...I didn't even stand a chance. He tossed me around like a rag doll (and I outweighed him by 75 pounds). Amazing stuff.
@jestfullgremblim8002 Жыл бұрын
Wow, you did Judo, Aikido and BJJ and yet he could still outmaneuver you even tho you have a weight advantage? Not to take any praise away from him, but that sounds to me like you're not that good hahahaha. But jokes aside, how come!?!? That's crazy

I think Master Yang is to be congratulated for having the courage and conviction to teach REAL and TRADIONAL Martial arts in a world that finds this sort of thing threatening, judging from some of the responses posted. Real Martial arts can be rough, if you want gentleness, take up dance or perhaps Yoga, don't try to undermine arts that took decades or centuries to create and perfect. Real Kung Fu is dying out, glad to see some are keeping it alive.

Mr yang is a great teacher and his lessons are much more than in this demo video. He knows his stuff very well and it is humbling to join his classes (and see how much power he has with no effort) I wish I were still in Montreal. If you are there, try one of his classes!

It's more like he's locking the join out to effectively make the limb rigid and therefore more effective a lever to move balance. A subtle difference but an important one. :)
@CottonBoxer16 жыл бұрын
YES THE LIMB IS BEING MADE RIGID WHICH , OF COURSE ALLOWS the player to control the body easily. don't forget: if they bend don't allow then to straighten out and if they are straight don't allow them to bend. so the arm isn't allowed to bend back once the attacker has had the elbow joint locked ...

hello Kenpoj81, if you think it is a joke, what can i say about this? I am the person who taught people in that video, hai yang is my name and i think i know how to use tai chi. BUT if you think my students were guaranteeing me on this video, i would like to invite you to try it with me. when i was a kid, i thought the same thing as yours when i saw tai chi people practing...

Gangrene & Anh, As a Taichi coach, I can tell you that Push-hands is both a drill and a fighting style. It's designed for close range grappling & wrestling. It was more useful in the old days when people carried swords which require a few feet of space to be effective. When you're too close to your opponent you push him out to create the space needed for the sword thrust. In any case, you have to combine push-hands with other techniques to be really effective. It's not complete by itself.

There is forward backward left and right, center single hand twi shou, then there is single circle on left single circle on right two circles become one in the middle. To complete the twei shou. There is a miriad of changes from each to the others but they form the complete set of flexible range drills.

Don't know much about snapping, but breaking balance is to (my interpretation of it and what I was taught) to be HEAVIER than your opponent at a given time (you can control your centre of gravity internally), to throw him off balance. Once he's off balance, you can do whatever you want to do.

@Lukeyblades you're not payin attention.. he's not puting force on the elbow joint. The side of his wrist is on the side of the bone, not against the flexible area and his supporting hand turns the wrist upwards cus he's pullin him around the side. Breaking the arm would be easy, but it's not a break.. it's a joint lock.
@drunkenwarrior1450014 жыл бұрын
the push hands i know doesnt include the arm snatch. this looks like the bow throw and bone lock science. its easy to do this to someone relaxed(like the free flowing push hands motion) but on the street someone might get tense(harden their body) on you and they will not be thrown around like this.......im just saying

It's actually a practice where they continue to kind of push each other and get a feel of each other's force. The point of this practice is not to really win or lose but to keep up with your opponent and get a feeling of someone else's force. In real application, someone would be getting tossed around (Most likely the person who doesn't know Tai Chi Quan)

by the way I took tai chi 3 days a week. 3 hrs. per for two years before I Iearned to fight with it. I've been practicing for 8 years now. I know a 20 form and 99 form. It was passed through Sato Kimbie and duke meade to me. Duke is very good and teaches in Columbus Ga. Amazing and true martial arts...An apple off the tree, not just preserves from the jar......Good jujitsu here though with the bone locks and the teachers core strength has definetly improved from what ever he is practicing.
@Pelitaiteilija16 жыл бұрын
As Ryooken said there are many schools. Chen is oldest, but a good teacher (like the one on the vid) is more important than god school. Look for tai chi classes and ask if they teach push hands or know someone who does. There are many locking arts that teach you something like tuishou. If you can't find good TC teacher, you can try to find good aikido, jujutsu, bagua, judo etc teacher, and perhaps learn TC later. Also, TC has more form practice than tui shou, and often doesn't look like this.

In wang shu chen style tai chi, I get to feel my range of pwer and balance while moving forward and back and constantly . I have really never thought of keeping balance on one leg or another. It is not a main idea for me. more like good posture and moving to the full extent of range. you cannot forget the basics. move the body and that includes the waist. the basics must always be there. here i see good posture and jujitsu, but no chen push hands

Every art seems to have people that appeal to its higher ideals, which include becoming a whole, rounded person who is in harmony with himself and the world around him, and then there are those guys who think martial arts is about perfecting aggressive and dominating techniques to 'destroy your opponent'. Eventually all will realize, the opponent you need to dominate, is one's own aggressive and unbalanced nature.

It is unrealistic in a way. Push hands in the first scrolls is done with both standing in the same spot. Whoever loses his balance and moves a foot loses. In the next scrolls you learn to step in a linear fashion and turn around, In advanced stages you both can move around and whoever gets thrown down loses. sort of a game. It is somewhat soft and works on balance and range and pivoting the body out of the direct path of energy. this is ju jitsu done on someone told to stand still.
