Thank-you. Trying to give back to Judo, to help demonstrate before I am too old and wrinkly.

I recently just returned to judo after almost a 10 year hiatus due to illness, so videos like these are really helpful to work on my technique. Thanks for the upload.

This is a great video. Can tai otoshi cause a hip flexor strain when twisting the body? You mentioned that if you twist the upper body both toes must point in the same direction and I would only turn the foot at an angle that I threw the person over. I ask because I have a hip flexor strain and I want to modify some throws so I can do them.

It would be great if your videos showed both sides so that we can drop this bias towards doing the techniques right-side only

Too true, actually I used to almost always grip right but tai otoshi sudden switch to left grips half way through a fight won a few Ippon throws. The International statistics of right versus left throws are telling something more like 60/40%) and we need more left handed technicians at lower levels and correct, I could have shown left. But I have a bad right shoulder (I am 57yrs old) and sub-luxed my right elbow and still recovering that. Its easier right. The surgeon said the shoulder bones are even scalloped out where I use tsuri-te right, lol, makes that easier.

Pro Judo thank you for your reply. Are you sure that 40% of throws are left handed? It seems like 100% of judo videos and teachers only teach right side, instead of both sides. I am an 'old' beginner and my son and I are white belts together. I insist on doing techniques both sides and keep reminding my son to do the same. I made a judo floor to practice at home kzbin.info/www/bejne/qmWQaKidfLeKf80

I don't agree with teaching both sides equally, prefer our primary power needed in the drawing arm, (not so much required in the lifting arm) Most people should really perform left sided to optimise their power. I find as a coach, if I demonstrate left, that many children in the class will copy left application. I usually teach right, and its far too difficult for all judoka to gain competency in both sides of all throws required for contest.. but for gradings, they require a lower level of competency. Also a more basic understanding of body position and leverage. I prefer to teach right grips for right handers and left throws off the grab'n'go. Also left throws like ukigoshi and Ippon seoinage off the shoulder grip, sasae foot trip etc.

1) You mentioned your right elbow and right shoulder are damaged - isn't it the right side? Is it possible it happened from doing right side only? 2) I observed in the club that when partners throw me in randori, they always run around to pin me on my right side. Also a few weeks ago, I was doing randori in class - he was a high school kid and I must be 70 lbs heavier, but he is an advanced brown belt. I tried deashi barai with my right foot but his left foot would not budge. Then I tried with my left foot and I swept him easily - same sweep worked three times! I was puzzled why his right foot was weak but a few days ago when I watched a deashi barai video on youtube, I understood. Every one had done the move on him right side so his left foot was strong. No one did left side, so his right foot was weak! 3) If one strengthens the left arm through exercise then will one be able to do both sides equally? 4) For me, if my body is oriented so my right side is near (say) the door handle, I use my right hand. If my left side is nearer, then I use my left hand. 5) My son's first competition is this weekend and I am using your osotogari video to revise the move with him.

@Spinks sensei You mentioned your right elbow and right shoulder are damaged - isn't it the right side? Is it possible it happened from doing right side only? This bothers me because in Roy Inman's Judo Handbook he says, "it is best to practice both sides to avoid muscular imbalance".
