People don't seem to realise that sounding a horn at a learner driver can actually put everyone in more danger; it forces them panic and make potentially dangerous decisions. Impatience can be deadly in today's society and it's a huge problem.

It's no wonder learners can lack confidence with situations like this. It could have been their first lesson or they could just be nervous behind the wheel - people have no patience these days and make no progress. Although letting them pass is obviously the right thing to do with situations like this (and a recent article I read says to let tailgaters pass) it just allows them to think that their bullying attitudes are okay so they continue to do it again and again. I always leave a 2-3 second gap of the vehicle in front of me. No one should tailgate and no one should brake check. Interesting to see how like 99% of people are not in a hurry anymore all of a sudden, when the speed limit changes to sixty or seventy. The vast majority of people keep speeding when the limit is under 40 mph especially in built up areas. Definitely not the learner's fault but in my opinion it wasn't only the tailgater's fault. If I was in this situation and was being shouted at and chastised like "WHERE'S THE VAN GOING" and "TOO LATE" and then later on "... put us in danger" - it would make my anxiety build up more and more and make the whole situation a hundred times worse. Again, it's just my opinion and it's hard to judge from such a small clip if this is how the instructor normally is and if the pupil is comfortable with this kind of teaching (personally I wouldn't be, but that's just me).

Learner was in no way to blame. I will admit that I have been impatient behind people but I give learners more space and time to manoeuvre than other drivers, the only time I've reacted to a learner was when one slowed to 18 mph in a 30 zone, my only reaction was to overtake (clear road with good visibility). The one who are to blame in those kind of situations is the instructor. If the driver is going 20 in a 30 zone or similar the driver behind has the right to be annoyed. As long as the actions doesn't affect the learner-driver, since s/he still controls the car.

@@Proccito Yes, learner drivers can be annoying because they're slower but that is because they're inexperienced and are figuring out how to control a car in the right way as well as developing skills such as spatial awareness. As an experienced driver, you do all that almost unconsciously but after over 10 years of driving I still remember how overwhelming it all felt for the first couple of months. @@Proccito Nope. Part of learning how to drive is also noticing your speed and learning how to drive a steady speed. Especially that last part is something that I still find hard. And don't forget: it could very well be a lesson from the instructor to a overcautious learner driver, to let them feel what their behaviour triggers in other drivers. I've had the opposite happen as well: a temporary brand-new car because the regular one had some kind of malfunction. It was far more quiet, drove alot smoother and had a bit more power. Before I knew it, I was driving 120 km/h on the motorway, while the limit at the moment was 100 km/h. After overtaking a few cars, with my instructor basically polling me before my last overtake: 'Well, we'll just overtake that one as well right?' When I was back in the right lane, she started questioning me: 'We're driving along nicely aren't we?' I felt completely confident (my instructor also said the car suited me better) and said 'Yeah we are'. 'Everyone's a bit slow today right?' 'Yeah... weird huh...' 'So uh... what's the limit here and how fast are you driving?' Looked down at the speedometer: whoops.... and immediately let go of the accelerator... Expect the unexpected from a learner driver.

I'll be honest, if my old instructor spoke to me like that I'd have pulled the car up and stopped. I think your tone is very aggressive and comes across patronizing. I could hear she was nervous about the car behind and honestly, you shouting at her wont be helping... yes okay, she could have gone quicker or slowed down more or been less hesitant... but your yelling makes you so nervous... no chance. I loved my instructor. Glad he was calm and helped me with the nerves.

Even had one guy get out of his car, walk up to the kid's window (driver side) and call me in the passenger seat, an asshole because we didn't turn left fast enough. It's amazing! After that, I got a dash cam with my own money for the company car. Last month I was driving, no student, and this guy stopped in the middle of the road, open his door and tried to intimidate me because I was going too slow (the speed limit) when he was behind me before. Turned in the video to police. They called me in a couple of days and said they would be delivering his citations.

No, it's not fair whatsoever and as an instructor you could pass that footage on to the police for consideration of the question of prosecuting the driver of that car for driving without due care. The teaching was on point too, and definitely a great idea to get your student to pull over to get rid of the idiot. The only advice I object with is 1:36 "off you go now 'cuz you'll force him to overtake and put us in danger". The student is not whatsoever to blame in that situation and should never be told that the reason she needs to speed up is because the car behind is impatient. If anything, she should be tought to slow down until she is so slow that he either backs off or overtakes. If he puts himself in danger that's not the fault of the student at all.
@ashley_neal
@ashley_neal 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment. I get what you have said, but one thing people must understand that if someone drives unnecessarily slowly It can cause people behind to overtake one otherwise they wouldn't have done. People often do this without good preparation to overtake safely, which can put everyone in danger. At no point was the pupil blamed for the tailgater. Honestly, the lack of progress shown by some learners Is probably the main reason why there is still a stigma about slow learner drivers, and the reason why people feel as though they have to force past. And this can be attributed to bad Driving Instructors only. Kind regards, Ashley.
@ViperJay5
@ViperJay5 7 жыл бұрын
Even seniors feel that driving slower is better and that they have a right to go as slow as they want on the road. Driving slow when you don't have to creates road rage and will cause drivers behind you to pass illegally most of the time and that can cause a crash. It's better to do the speed limit. But what gets me is when people make their own speed limits. I see people admitting to going 10mph over the speed limit in the comments. You're just as bad of a driver for doing that. Speed limits are there for a reason and just because your little entitled ass feels that you should be able to go as far as you want, doesn't mean that's how the world works. A few speeding tickets should help cool off those lead feet.

Great video. I see this sort of thing every day. I suffer tailgaters daily for daring to stick to the speed limit. I also see ridiculousness such as in this video. I must admit to getting pretty angry at times, but I try to realise that I am in control of how I drive. Just because the driver behind is acting a bellend, it doesn't need to affect how I drive. I try to focus on how I FEEL after a confrontation. I have had them, but it rarely results in feeling like a victory for decency and natural justice, more of a tense and unpleasant adrenaline and stress afterwards. I feel much better when I have acted the grown up and pulled over, allowing them to pass. It's really hard at times. Some people won't forgive the smallest mistake either. I would like to ask them how they became such "expert" drivers, with no tuition or mistake making.

It may seem strict, but it's the best and most clear way to teach Traffic is no joke, and one needs to be taught well I had a similar kind of teacher. He always said what went wrong, why, and how I should've reacted. For example 1:20 is clear. You see the issue, explain it, then correct what the learner should've done, how they could've reacted better

In all truth I know it’s a learner blah blah blah, but really he/she shouldn’t be on the road if they can barely handle a roundabout. They should be in a car park with no one around, until they grow confidence.

J Beales I don’t think many people get the same confidence on the street as they do a parking lot. The only way to effectively learn is to actually do it. Parking lots don’t have flowing traffic to learn from.

There's no roundabouts in a car park, so how will she practice and get more confident at using roundabouts? When I first started driving, I absolutely hated roundabouts, but after plenty of practice, I could use them without much thought.

I failed a mock test with my instructor once because some idiot with a van decided to tailgate me for 20 minutes, it puts too much pressure on learners. But I passed first time a few days ago. Your videos and other you tubers are very helpful, thanks.

No, if you fail it was due to your mistake. He might've tailgaited you, but you clearly didn't respond in an appropriate manner otherwise you would've still passed.

I passed fairly recently. I had to get a black box installed in my car because it made my insurance cheaper (as I am young as well). As a result of this I get tailgated quite a lot. People don't seem to like going at the correct speed limit these days and its so frustrating.

while i was learning and during my test this was the number one thing that got me panicing, constantly checking to see how close someone was worried they would try and overtake me even though im doing the correct speed.

When you are being tailgated by a driver who is pressurising, slow a little, take your time and ignore them. Otherwise they will push you psychologically into making mistakes and panicking. The police use this as a tactic to make you do something wrong, the tiniest thing, then they can pull you over. I once had a copper following me around town so close I couldn’t see in my interior mirror the ‘Police’ logo on their bonnet (yes…that close). I only recognised they were police because I could clearly see their uniforms😳. I kept cool, stayed a couple of mph under the limit and just carried on…after a few minute of matching my turns, they got bored and sought easier prey elsewhere. So yes…they were trying to panic me into making an error…why? Well, I was in an elderly vehicle, so I suspect they were looking for an excuse to give it a good roadside inspection.

tailgating car: goes on to drive dangerously close to another driver just trying to get from A to B.

That's why my first car was a Land Rover defender, slow, crumple zone is the other car and I can't see tailgaters behind. What a difficult lesson to learn for your student. You are an excellent tutor, handled very well. I hope she went on to pass first time.

That made my heart sink. My sons going to be a learner driver next year and it terrifies me that he may be dealing with inconsiderate people like that. I show him now, whilst hes in the car with me, what to do in each situation. I often say right car up me bum, I'm just gonna pull over, even if I'm at the speed limit! I've taught him to let them go and get on with it. With learners I Always give ample room so they can concentrate on learning even if they are only comfortable doing 20, it doesnt matter in the long run!! I hope this student knows that she cannot control others and there is always a prat to find.

Had this yesterday as I was learning my daughter. First of all the van was tailgating up through a 20 mph area then we're into a 40 still tailgating us then we're into a 60 road where were doing 50 to 55 as its a bendy single carriage way road then he's still tailgating through the roundabouts. My daughter us very good now doesn't go slow as she's been learning over a year. I find it hard to know what to do in these circumstances as tailgaters seriously annoy me. I do tell her to pull over to let them past ( i often do that when I'm driving.) but saying that why should I tell her to. Pull over it's not her doing anything wrong!
