Here is the tailstock die holder I made for my home shop and the process I went through to design and build it. I've also incorporated a modified ER16 collet chuck to hold taps which works great - in particular for small taps. The design itself is very simple and this is a great project for the home shop.
I have a full set of drawings for free on my blog if you are interested. You can make this design or use it as a starting point for your own.
No more messing around with bulk die handles (for the most part) on the lathe anymore!
Watch Joe's video on setting precision angles on the compound: • Setting the Lathe comp... This is how I set the 2 degree angle for the Schaublin lathe.

How are you driving the work when you're turning between centers for the arbor? I don't see a lathe dog. Does the headstock center have something that bites into the work? Awesome project, by the way. I was rewatching the video because I'm starting to build one for myself.

I think the headstock center is just plain dead center but since he's only taking light cuts the work piece doesn't stop turning. It's just friction I think...

Nice design, I may make one. 😀 I noted that you use aluminum as a protection against scoring the work. That works very well, I have used it as well, but since then I cut some leather strip's about three inches long for my mini lathe and sewed the ends together. Now all I do is place them in my chuck and I'm good to go. It may be a little tricky to get the jaws tight enough on independent adjusting jaws, but for me it works. I just don't know for how long.

I don't think I'd key the shaft though. Allowing the body to rotate is a primary design function.

Excellent video! It might be an idea to look at the audio levels when you have your lathe running though. Probably not a big deal unless you are listening through headphones, but the lathe volume made me turn down the audio and then I really couldn't hear the narration or the music.

It's really nice for small taps as once you hit the bottom of the hole you just let go and shut the lathe off. Yes I've had this video laying around for awhile.

Most excellent! Do you find that the set screws hold it well enough? Meaning, in the dies I have there are two dimples 180 degrees apart that the screws on the die holder lock in to. The holder I bought has them 180 to match. Black ops fund, I've heard that before. :-) Nice subliminal subscribe message too.
@chrisj4570g
@chrisj4570g 6 жыл бұрын
thecogwheel my (former) concern with making one was laying out those set screw holes. Making them 180 apart is easy enough, and in theory making them center of the die front to back should be easy, but my thought was that if I or the die was off, I could push it out of alignment. Anyhow, the er collet system has me curious on some other projects.
