these facilities all added up will still pale in comparison to TSMC's current output. it takes a decade at the fastest to become profitable as a chip facility, at least for the high end stuff.

I’m surprised minimalistic approaches in all modernizing industries haven’t made it to the main-stream yet. Like the simplicity of just knowing a car may just run on gas and oil, roll your windows up by hand, could create peace of mind for a lot of say.. car drivers. Not having to worry about their vehicles going up in price due to chip shortages and conflict with Taiwan

It makes a lot of sense from the consumer's perspective, but it's bad for profits.

One problem people don't talk about is if war doesn't break out China is at an advantage due to labor/resources cost differences: * US just invested billions for protectionism (i.e. an inefficient local chips industry) * China just invested billions creating a competing chips supply chain
@antonleimbach6482 ай бұрын
Get a grip. Taiwan is building maybe 25% of the world’s chips. Yes, they are the best you can get but a refrigerator does not need top dollar IC’s to function. Most products do not but cellphones, automobiles, and most of the high end products do need IC’s made in Taiwan. Would it be catastrophic for the world economy? No. Would it be a serious shit storm? Yes. We would just go back to the 1980’s tech.
@cancanops2 ай бұрын
The top countries making chips are Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, the USA and China. In the event of a Taiwan war, all these countries would get dragged in. No more chips. And yes, we would go back to pre chip tech, but it would take years and years for manufacturing to adjust. 2 years of COVID restrictions and people were already complaining and killing themselves, imagine if there were no new fridges or tech over that time.

@naguoning2 ай бұрын
What is your definition of winning? A fair chance Taiwan can hold off full invasion until Japan/USA etc intervene to some extent. NO way Taiwan could take control of China any more thank Ukraine can control Russia but Taiwan is a volcanic island. We are a natural fortress. It is relatively possible to defend for a while. As to attacking China back? Well at the least the 3 gorges dam is a real target but no way us normal people know the true odds on our chance of success in attacking it. The damage would be devastating if it is breached in a significant way though. In that case China would be unlikely to keep attacking Taiwan in a meaningful way. If China did manage to take the island no way are they getting all the tech plants or just as importantly people willing to continue manufacturing or teach them how....

If new tech, like cars, cant be made anymore then that means that existing devices for example cars in this case will become a finite source and prices will go up. Families who have more than one car could sell their older cars for a higher price because while in normal circumstances the value of the car would have decreased, the limited quantity would push the prices up by simple demand on a limited supply.

I really wish people would stop talking about the collapse of capitolism, the economy and tech like theyre synonymous with the collapse of man kind and humanity. If nothing ever exports from taiwan for the entire rest of our lives, we will be fine, this is not a life ending thing. If we can produce new tech or new cars or whatever, we will be fine. If the economy collapses, guess what, we will be fine. We will figure it out and adapt, these things are not *needed* to survive, and we wont all turn feral and bloodthirsty without them. The only people who are convinced the crash of the economy is a civilization ending event are the people who dont have any applicable life skills, their only skills involve the stock market and they literally dont know how to get what they need to survive without buying it. Those people see economic collapse as life ending, they picture themselves as turning feral and taking what they need from others by force in that scenario, but theres a bigger chunk of people who DO know how to get what they need without money or force and even without tech. Its just the people who talk about the collapse of capitolism/economy/tech like itll be apocalyptic chaos dont know any of us or any other way of life and theyve put no effort into learning before they freak out and come to the conclusion "i would be so fucked id go feral and k*ll a man for his food and so will everyone else" 🙄 we will be fine, let them collapse

Thanks for that, you made a good point, during various parts of my life have I had to live very simply, and it’s not all that hard when you have to. I live without a freezer most the time, a fridge for long periods of time, no car, no cooking facilities apart from a microwave (and sometimes not even that), i’ve had no running water for a while (tricky but not impossible) and no heating (tricky during the winter, but again not impossible) it makes life a little bit more tricky but it’s not a disaster!
