As an American long-time Taiwan resident, I think there's an important nuance that western media generally miss in their reporting on Taiwan. The Taiwan people did not "dismiss" China's warnings so much as they (rightly) just ignored it. I know that doesn't sound like much of a difference, but there's an important distinction. Western media reporting seems to always erroneously imply that deep down, Taiwanese recognize that they are to some degree under the governance of China, and that they choose to be rebellious by rejecting China's attempts to exert control over Taiwan. The reality is that Taiwanese today by and large feel no allegiance or connection to China in terms of governance. When China spews its bellicose warnings at Taiwan, the Taiwanese people feel no obligation to pay it any heed at all. There is no need for them to actively "dismiss" it. Whatever China says with regard to governing Taiwan is completely irrelevant to them. They just ignore it, and move forward by voting based on what they feel is best for their own self (and national) interests--the same as citizens of any other democratic sovereign nation do. Can you ever imagine a headline after a US election that reads "American voters dismiss UK's warnings and elect _____"? The UK's opinions on who should lead the US government are completely irrelevant to Americans. That American voters may go against the UK government's wishes is totally un-newsworthy. So should it be with Taiwan with regard to China's wishes. China should focus more on their own [myriad] internal problems, and western media should stop buying into China's fantasy that they have any legitimate claim to ruling Taiwan which Taiwanese are obligated to "dismiss".

@@digitalnomad9985 No, I just think it's stupid to regard the one-person-one-vote system as a religious belief. People's ultimate goal is to live a better life, and any political system is just a tool to achieve this goal. But now many political elites cannot help people live a better life, so they brainwash the people and make them mistakenly believe that the one-person-one-vote system is their ultimate goal, and therefore attack all countries that have not adopted this political system. Everyone has forgotten that Hitler was elected by the Germans on a one-person-one-vote basis. It is very ridiculous for people to create enemies for no reason. The criterion for judging the quality of a political system is not communism, capitalism, monarchy, or anything else, but only one: whether people live a better life. 90% of the countries on this planet have one-person-one-vote elections, but the truly wealthy countries are still the former colonial powers. There are enough matters that must be resolved. You are causing problems. If democracy matters, then it shouldn't be about China. Take China to the international court; you won't win that battle. Your nation needed a new leadership. Take a closer look at Korea and Japan. They are willing to go to war over an island. They will call your bluff 100%. Your nation needs to take another approach to dealing with your mother nation. You are an offspring. You should approach them with Respect and Love. You are approaching your elders that you are the family's black sheep while knowing that you cannot defend yourselves. 10% is the basic. If you want to cause problems, the price will increase dramatically. You should figure out the destiny of your nation. Because you don't choose the fate of your nation. The free people of Taiwan have decided , and Red China should respect thier choice. Taiwan can not be a part of China, as it has different culture, democracy, and its people are much richer. Red China still can be a good and decent neighbor, and that will bring her more benefits than entering into a war that will be as bitter as that of Ukraine.

Communist China was established in 1949, when the Republic of China moved to Taiwan after its defeat. Taiwan helped ROC to survive until now. China and Taiwan are two separate countries separated by the Taiwan Strait geographically. Taiwan is a democratic county while China is a communist government without popular election! Taiwan has its government, its own political system, its own defense, its own strong economy, its own culture. Any foreigner needs to get a visa from Taiwan government to visit Taiwan. Taiwan issues its own money "New Taiwan Dollars". A sincere congratulation to Taiwan people for the successful election of its president on January 13th, 2024!

Glad to hear a reporter state the fact that Taiwan was never ruled by China. Finally! The factually incorrect "split in 1949" meme by the western media has always confused the understanding that China has absolutely no legitimate claim to Taiwan in any way whatsoever. Taiwan was ruled by Japan for a good part of the 20th century for goodness sakes!
@marcogumiero861011 ай бұрын
From the start of the 17th century to 1895 Taiwan was part of China, and again from 1945 to today (they are called republic of China, Remember?) But I Guess you are ignorant, so no point.

@@marcogumiero8610 Japan relinquished control of Taiwan in the early 50s -- well after the PRC was in control of China. Taiwan is officially "undefined" as a country and unofficially a defacto self-governing democracy. Again, there may have been bits and pieces of the island where there was administrative control from the Emperor but far from full control of the island. In fact, the rulers before the PRC and the PRC (for most of the 20th century) wanted nothing to do with Taiwan. It's only a very recent event where China (PRC) has these delusions of wanting to annex Taiwan.

Xi's "Runification" based on "historical ownership" is total nonsense not supported by historical fact. The idea of "China" as a nation-state did not emerge until the end of the Manchurian Empire. ROC, Republic of China, was declared on Jan 1, 1912, as a revolution against the Manchurian Empire. PRC, People's Republic of China, was established on October 1, 1949. Which country has "legitimate" rights for Taiwan based on "historical ownership"? This is a very dumb question. But just let us accept for the moment the premise that a country could have "historical ownership" rights to a piece of territory, let us look at the history of Taiwan. The "native people" of Taiwan never did have much say about what foreign powers who came to take over parts of Taiwan as their territories. The Dutch (Dutch East India Company and its army) occupied the coastline of the southern half of Taiwan from 1624 - 1662. The Spaniards colonized northern Taiwan, around 1/67 - 1/7 of the Taiwan Island, calling it "Spanish Formosa", starting in 1626. In August 1642 the Dutch drove out the Spaniards and took that north Taiwan territory. Zheng Chenggong 鄭成功, a Southern Ming general defeated the Dutch outposts on Taiwan in 1661 and established the Kingdom of Tungning 東寧國. In 1683, Qing (Manchurian Empire) defeated the Kingdom of Tungning 東寧國 in the Battle of Penghu 澎湖海戰 and proceeded to rule over the western and northern part of Taiwan, less than half of the total Taiwan Island. In 1895, Qing ceded its Taiwan territory to Imperial Japan which ruled over the entire Island. After Japan surrendered to the Allies at the end of WW2 on September 2, 1945 Republic of China ROC (KMT) took over Taiwan under military rule. The Civil War between the KMT and the CCP resumed in 1946. CCP chairman Mao Zedong proclaimed the establishment of the People's Republic of China (PRC) on 10/1/1949. KMT started to retreat to Taiwan and completed the retreat by December 1949. On December 7, 1949, ROC in Taiwan declared itself the government-in-exile of China. Japan finally relinquished its territorial claims to Taiwan in the Treaty of San Francisco, which was signed on 9/8/1951 and came into effect on 4/28/1952. Both ROC and PRC were not present at the negotiation and signing of the Treaty. At that time, there was no consensus which "China" should be present. In total, according to current estimates, a migration of between 900,000 and 1,100,000 people must have taken place to Taiwan from the China mainland between 1945 and 1955. The prior population of the island, at the end of Japanese rule, is estimated as 6,500,000. Of these, the Japanese subpopulation of about 500,000 were mostly repatriated by 1946. There was a native "kingdom" on the west coast of Taiwan, which the Dutch called Middag, date of establishment unknown and ended in 1732. This "Kingdom" was probably not a "kingdom." It might be a confederacy of tribes. When the Dutch invaded Taiwan and later conquered the Spain colony in northern Taiwan, this group of natives had managed to resist the Dutch army and remained self-administered. In Chinese records this "kingdom" is called 大肚王國, "Big Belly Kingdom" (no kidding), based on geographical landmark 大肚溪, Big Belly River. In 1661, Zheng Chenggong 鄭成功 arrived at Taiwan and drove out the the army of the Dutch India Company an established the Kingdom of Tungning 東寧國. But defeating the Big Belly Kingdom turned out to be tough. In one battle, a whole 500 men regiment was killed by the tribesmen. In a brutal battle in in 1670 Zheng's army almost wiped out the whole Papula 巴布拉 tribe. In 1731 a large-scale tribal uprising against Qing rulers lasted for almost a year. Qing dynasty sent in its regiments from Fujian Province 福建省 and squashed the rebellion, with much blood shed and eradicated the Big Belly Kingdom. There was a very short-lived Republic of Formosa 臺灣民主國 that existed on Taiwan in 1895 between the formal cession of Taiwan by the Qing Dynasty to the Emperor of Japan by the Treaty of Shimonoseki 下關條約 / 馬關條約. When news of the treaty reached Taiwan, some "Qing Dynasty Chinese" decided to form an independent republic and resist Japan. It was proclaimed on May 23,1895 and Japanese troops conquered it on October 21. The Republic lasted only 151 days. CCP likes to throw claims of "historical ownership" on territories including, and not limited to, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Tibet, and territories in dispute with Vietnam and India. Putin has exerted his "historical ownership" claims to Crimea and Ukraine, and you know what other countries he would like to exert that claim if he has the means to do so. Such claims are plain absurd. Just imagine Mongolia, Japan, Tibet, India, Britain, Spain, Netherlands, Mexico...etc. exerts their "historical ownership." Just imagine what the USA would be like when Britain, Spain, France, Mexico, Portugal, Belgium, and native Americans exert their "historical ownership" based on history, or unequal, unjust, and fraudulent treaties, or unequal, unjust, and fraudulent territory transactions. Furthermore, making such "historical ownership" claims frequently implies an implicit recognition of the legitimacy of gaining a piece of territory by force. A country's territory or part of it was almost always gained by force sometime in history. So, when another country gains a piece of territory from you, it would have immediate legitimate ownership of that piece of territory you just lost. I am not saying that history should not be a factor to consider in territorial disputes, or historical grievances, or historical injustices, but just because one's county (or some precursor of that country) "owned" a piece of territory some time in the past should not be and could not be the main and determining factor.
