In this very interesting examination of TCMA vs MMA, we have a Taiwanese self-proclaimed Tai Chi Master named Li Ming 李明 challenging MMA Mad Dog Panda Xu Xiaodong. And what's more: Yang Tai Chi Li Ming actually has footage of himself testing his Tai Chi (and Bagua too) against two different boxers in Taiwan. Let's bring in Rob and analyze how well this Tai Chi master does in the ring. Is there any efficacy in his boxing? Could he really take on Xu Xiaodong? Also, what do you think about Li's interesting approach to holding his hands in the ring.

The so-called Tai Chi master had absolutely no footwork. This allowed the 2 boxers to set their punches eventually knocking down this so-called master. Because the so-called master also had a poor defence and his punches were not technically sound and so comparatively generated very little power, the boxers really had free reign to throw clean shots at will. You have to give the so-called master some credit though for sticking it out for 2 rounds against 2 different fighters who look much younger and have more boxing experience than himself but I think he was too old and unprepared for this type of sparring. In boxing this is called a mismatch. He should stick to what he does best (if he is indeed a tai chi master as claimed) and leave Xu Xiaodong to younger, hungrier and more suitable fighters.

I actually think he probably know boxing, but he just insist on wanting to use Tai Chi to defeat Xu. Because Taiwan got compulsory military service and in the army they are trained in TKD, Chinese boxing (which is very similar to MMA) and kick boxing. So, I think he know those boxing skills he just want to use Tai Chi to win to prove it is a valid fighting style. But I think that is going to be very hard, Tai Chi is design mainly for health not combat, you can use it as basic self defense, if you are trained in that manner, but, it won't work very well in the ring.

At least this guy had the courage to get up and actually challenge people instead of not showing anything until Xu Xiaodong challenges them. I don't see this guy taking him though, his defense is feeble and he shows little striking power. He does have some good endurance though at least for his age, but he'd need some Homer Simpson level level chin to not get his ass clapped by Xu Xiaodong and looking like he fell off a train afterwards.

If you pair anything with boxing, yoga for example, you can suddenly claim yoga is a practical combat sport, all you need to do is learn boxing as well...

The main problem I see with most traditional styles is that they don't spar realistically or train with other styles. I feel like most would benifit greatly if they could incorporate some of the training of Boxing. Im not talking about changing the art only incorporating some of the training and actually sparring. If given the chance I would totally try working my Wing Chun in a Boxing gym. I think it would make a huge difference in my skill. However I would want to wear the fingerless MMA gloves. I tried Boxing gloves and you can't use techniques very well with those.

Master Wong explained that TCMA will not work against an experienced boxer. This boxer although an amateur, clearly has good technique and stance. You have to appreciate the fact that he threw himself in the ring to test himself. This is a wake up call for him. Wide stance can work as I’ve seen in both Karate and Kung Fu matches but it depends on the practitioner and how they effectively counter or check the low back leg kicks etc.
@TheHailstorm77
@TheHailstorm77 3 жыл бұрын
John Smith No, I just haven’t seen anyone using real tai chi in a full contact match. It just doesn’t work. It only works if you mix with hard and soft Kung fu. Just using Tai Chi itself against a professional boxer will not work. Unless, that TCMA can really demonstrate really good skills. So far, no masters of TCMA have demonstrated in public in a real fight other than compliant students.
@TheHailstorm77
@TheHailstorm77 3 жыл бұрын
John Smith Well, I did say you need to learn both hard and soft KF skills then you can apply Taiji/Taichi to fighting. Just learning Tai Chi itself and trying to apply in a real sparring match or a real fight situation just doesn’t work.Which is why Bagua was created and XingYi. In full contact situation everybody either boxes or kicks. Nobody does straight up animal styles or Tai Chi fighting. You know why? The Art has change. A lot of the traditional martial arts moves do work not saying it doesn’t. However, if you’re a Tai Chi expert, you better know how to block, counter and neutralize somebody that either punches and kicks really fast and hard. Other than that, there has never been any recorded history of actual full contact fights with fighters using only Tai Chi. Have you seen any? Show me a clip. There’s only few masters I’ve seen in an old 1950s Wailing and flailing their arms and that’s it. Even at professional KF tournaments I’ve been to and seen. I have never seen any top Tai Chi schools with their students winning undefeated matches or score the best. It’s always Southern Shaolin Schools that beat Karate, Taekwondo, a Muay Thai, Bando, Burma, and yes Tai Chi schools. Tai Chi is a very good art to help you relax in fights but does it stand a lone as the only art that works in real life fighting situations? Nope! Let’s keep it real man. Majority of these masters are fake and hold only a title to their degree and have never fought in a real life situation or even allow a student to test his skills, without being compliant or complacent. I already have a lot of respect to learn. I myself have taken Tai Chi Chuan but already learned the hard style Southern Shaolin but after digging some info. There’s a lot of soft incorporated into some Southern Shaolin for a reason. Back then, both Wu Dang and Shaolin combined their arts to fight the Manchurian government of the Qing/Ching Dynasty.
