Thought provoking topic, and well navigated by the great hosts. Taiwan has a lot of red tape procedures which rely on assumptions about “normal Taiwanese” which can be unforgiving or even hostile about edge cases. This can include government processes (like ID numbers and systems already mentioned) but also private institutions such as banks. If you don’t fit neatly into a box and you don’t have connections, it feels like people just don’t care. Making it easier for expats that by definition are not “normal Taiwanese” to escalate or find advocacy would be a great direction towards making the idea of repatriation feel less daunting. Then of course there’s the growth rate disparity between incomes and housing costs… c’mon now.

*Please have Taiwanese people live stream themselves learning English on youtube with live chat on, people will come to correct in live chat, and those people can learn your language/s at the same time* 🇹🇼 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 🇺🇸

When I started working I took notes. The 3 things everyone talked nonstop about were: Golf, Alcohol, and American Football. If Taiwan increases all 3, I am sure they will attract a ton of talent. Or they can look across the pond to places like Thailand which is swarming with expats and digital nomads. What do they have that Taiwan doesn't have? That's right, spicy Thai cuisine. I am joking but there are some things that Taiwan has against it that are not so easy to change. #1 all news is about threat of attack from China. All things being equal vs. other countries, people might have reservation about setting roots, owning property, having a family in that situation. Taiwanese are used to threats from an authoritarian neighbor with thousands of missiles aimed at them, but people in other countries are usually not. Taiwan also isn't known as a tropical paradise that attracts the remote worker community as much as places like Bali, Bangkok, or other places where they have cut taxes as incentives. The pay level in Taiwan means that they would have challenge leaving Taiwan in the future. eg. I would earn 1/3 to 1/4 of what I earn in the U.S. where I am already earning less on average than people in a higher cost of living state like California or NY. This makes Taiwan a good place to retire, but not a great place to earn savings and potentially move elsewhere later.

The fact that English is not widely used in Taiwan in work or business means that it will be hard to attract expats to taiwan. Also, employment conditions and pay are not good. Therefore I think they won't be successful in doing this. They would have more success in promoting medical tourism. Eventually, taiwan will have a population of only 15m people by the end of the century they are saying. The universities teach a very old curriculum also. Troubling times ahead for taiwan. I'm wondering whether it is better to live my retirement years in my original country of birth.

Taiwan is great but most jobs are limited to those who can read/write in Chinese and the cost of housing (to purchase) is ridiculously high. Requiring people to give up their citizenship to obtain Taiwanese citizenship doesn't help either. For women who may work through their most fertile years, the legalization of surrogacy and IVF for single females is important and needs to be legalized. The legalization of surrogacy is also important for gay couples who want to build a family affordably, safely and with protections instead of having them travel abroad (expensive) where they have less protections as non-citizens. The path to citizenship is long, but there needs to be a focus on convincing people to come to Taiwan in the first place. as an incoming immigrant on a gold card, I may not even qualify for the income requirement if I take a local job with a Taiwanese company. Suffice to say I’m not moving because of any fiscal dreams. Obviously the government can’t force local jobs to pay competitive wages with the US, but they are general lower than Hong Kong and Japan as well. Instead, the government should invest heavily in childcare infrastructure and strict workplace condition laws. Ban unpaid overtime and actually let people have time to enjoy their lives and families. Continue improving government childcare programs and cut taxes for parents. Also, help queer people have kids! It doesn’t have to be those specific policies, but Taiwan has the opportunity to be the best place to raise children in Asia, while also raising the native birth rate. I don’t even want children, but I feel so bad for the people that do and their kids that not only face competitive schools but over-stressed parents.
