Mattel sold the exact same Barbie, Ken and Midge dolls in Japan from the 60s to the 70s that were sold here in the U.S.! Japan had many exclusive fashions that were only sold there such as kimonos. Children considered the original dolls too adult looking who preferred a more anime´ appearance. In the 80s, Mattel produced the new Jenny dolls with large round eyes and slimmer body which was popular and successful! Mattel had licensing agreements with 2 Japanese Companies - Takara and Bandai.
