When I was a teenager, Abba was uncool, music for girls not for us boys. But as getting older, I realised how incredibly good musicians Björn and Benny and what great singers Agnetha and Annifrid are. A friend of mine, Ian Miller, was a guitar player for John Paul Young in Australia when they opened for Fleetwood Mac on the Rumours tour. He tried to explain the complexity of the ABBA song compositions to me but it was musically way over my head. Me too - at the time I thought "It's just pop" - but as the years have passed lots of people have done "just pop" and it was always so much worse than Abba. So I gradually realised Abba isn't "just pop", it's pefect pop. But there best songs has to be "winner takes it all" because there's so much bitter emotion beneath the perfect pop veneer.

I love love loved this song as a kid in the 70s who didn’t quite know he was gay yet. I have been a big fan of their music ever since, with a confliction: Their Swedish folk roots underlying their spooky mastery of the broadening genres of pop give much of their catalog the tension you both picked up in this song. There is an unabashed innocence celebrating naïve music-making mashed up with a sophisticated, sometimes cold and corporate ability to emulate the most popular music of the era. They have a supernatural progressive rock anthem called “Eagle” I’d love to hear your reaction to.

You know you're top-tier songwriters when your songs are turned into a Broadway musical which then inspires a series of movies (the whole Mamma Mia thing). At that point, you're not just selling records -- you're an institution.

But you sort of add to Andy and Alex's argument about why they think teen girls back then would have been into ABBA. The Mamma Mia franchise was an all-woman affair. Screenplay=Female, director=female, 1/2 of the producing team = female. That product was never going to be kickstarted by a male! They were an anomaly coming out of Sweden. How many other mega popstars were/are coming out of that neck of the woods? "Swedish popstars that made it huge around the world for $200 Alex". Their band name was beyond original and strange. Because of their choice for band name, their material was the easiest to find in any record store, because it literally kicked off any tape or vinyl selection. Oh yeah, and at the time there were two married couples. They were of the perfect time period as well. They blended pop with dance music and fit in nice so neatly into that disco period. Practically everyone was getting a pass, regardless of their musical talent. It was an era where there was hardly any accountability, regarding writing process. That's not me taking a shot at them either. I think they were a group that ended at the perfect time, because had they stuck around, the 80's would have spit them out. Also, due to their reclusive nature and people wondering what the hell happened to them, that is the reason why you have a Broadway musical and a movie franchise. I don't mind ABBA, but I find them somewhat overrated.

Dancing Queen is actually on Rolling Stone's Top 500 songs of all time and one of Kurt Cobain's favorites. I'm 62 yo but I remember that ABBA was my guilty pleasure back in the day. I was definitely a closet fan, listening and singing in my room (anyone else use a hairbrush microphone???) after being out w/ friends getting stoned listening to Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, Pink Floyd and the like. I can now proudly say that I play ABBA out in the open with no shame whatsoever!

I would argue that their appearance with interviewer Dick Cavett was pretty amazing, with the most stunningly awkward interview, followed by a mini concert from them, sung and performed live. You can see how incredible they were. Most of the footage is on KZbin.

I appreciated the honest reaction and analysis. ABBA often get written off as throwaway pop or lightweight bubblegum, but they were willing to take a chance and try new things. The a cappella intro with the guys doing the chant-like vocals underneath is unusual, if not unique, in pop songs. (By the way, Bjorn wrote the song while jogging, the rhythm of his feet reflected in the guys' vocal line.) I also like how the seemingly-repetative chorus is actually performed differently every time to keep it fresh. Impeccable craftsmanship. I echo the recommendations for SOS (one of the best pop songs ever), Knowing Me, Knowing You (one of the saddest breakup songs), and The Name of the Game (kind of the musical inverse of Take a Chance -- rather than leading with the chorus, the song is a slow burn that takes something like two minutes to get through the chorus for the first time). And I could list another three dozen songs that are in my top ten. Warning: ABBA can be addictive, listen with caution.

It was "Dancing Queen" rather than "SOS" that did it, but don't forget Elvis Costello and Nick Lowe in the list of musicians improbably inspired by ABBA. When Lowe was producing "Oliver's Army" for Elvis Costello and the Attractions, he suggested musically subverting the harsh and politically pointed lyrics by inserting a spritely "Dancing Queen" piano hook. Elvis agreed, Steve Nieve created the perfect slice of Benny Andersson confectionary sugar on the ivories, and the song had both a musica hook and an ironic inflection that lifted it to another level.

As a teenager in the 70s and a young man in the 80s I was a big fan of ABBA. I was fortunate to see them in their one an only North American tour (in Chicago). They never really caught on in the US and were derided as bubblegum pop. But they were really big in many other parts of the world. However their music is standing up to the test of time. And the one thing that really blew me away was how after 40 years they actually came out with a new album (Voyage). And quality of their music and their voices was still great. Wasn’t just young teens. My parents loved them. Who never listened to pop or rock! All the neighbours did too. Everyone. They were HUGE. Hit after hit. With musical layering unique to their sound. You should read up on the musical genius of the males in the group writing the songs. Way more to their music than a simple pop song. This song does not need anymore hooks! Repetition done right! There is a tour/ concert documentary you can find easily. Fab in concert. The men in the group went on to have many successes. The biggest bands/ sounds - like Disco /Abba - were H-U-G-E. So catchy. But when the music changed, noone wanted to even admit they existed. It was brutal snobbery. The mastery of The BeeGees- noone wanted to know them in the 80s. They had to write hits for others because of the stigma. So there was that. But you put in Bee Gees or Abba and let the album play… you will not be able to stop yourself enjoying them. Tapping your toes, the whole thing. I defy you not to…! Both have many huge hits. Abba in particular was adored. They dominated at the time, not just for the young people. It was great fun. But they could write for deeper more painful themes. Seriously too many excellent and different songs to explore. It sounds and does just what it did at the time. And we need more if it! John Lennon, Kurt Cobain, Dave Grohl, Elton John, Madonna, U2, love(d) ABBA, and the list goes on. For good reason. Their melodies and vocal arrangements are second to none, the production superb. And I find there are so many hidden hooks and musical flourishes that you discover each time you listen. ABBA touched on many musical genres and pumped them out in their unique way. Also used amazing musicians, like Rutger Gunnarsson on bass and drummer Ola brunkert. But the genius is Benny Andersson, the composer who is a keyboard master - as good as Bach or Tchaikovsky - many of their music has classical origins.

This song pre-dates MTV, but as you know several bands made *"promo videos"* of their hit songs in the pre-MTV era, and the one for, "Take A Chance On Me", is quite charming. Super simple, as low-budget as they could possibly be, with two chairs on an empty set, but still fun all hell, thanks to the two beautiful singers in the band, Agnetha and Anni-Frid. They're adorable the way they dance a bit and bop with the music. Check it out on your own time, I bet you will find that you suddenly dig the song quite a bit more. In fact, given that their physical presence--not just their beauty but the way they tend to mug the camera--is so damn charming, I strongly suggest that you react to their promo videos whenever you do one of their songs. Especially their two best songs: *"Dancing Queen",* and, *"Knowing Me, Knowing You."*

There's no getting around that ABBA was a "pop" group. That being said, they have some of the best made pop songs out there. Their fans love them and their sound runs the gamut between extremely catchy and angsty.

A lot of their songs have a foundation in traditional folk music from Northern Europe. They are meant to be catchy and uplifting. Adding EWF vibe would make no sense in what they are trying to do. Abba is just about perfect pop music, a guilty pleasure.

ABBA is a true 1970s supergroup. Pop magic. They have an amazing body of work with lots of versatility. Everyone can name favorites - and plenty they just consider ho hum. But there is definitely an ABBA song that will get you - either chair dancing or right in the feels.

You need to see a video of them singing. All 4 harmonize really well. Not live but a official video of a song like SOS, Fernando, and Dancing Queen. They were part of the Disco Era and were over played during the 1970's at least for me. Now I like them more as a adult as they are nostalgic and I can appreciate them for what they were.

Abba is one of those guilty pleasure bands. We were cool in the 70's and 80's and couldn't admit you liked this stuff. (I always did like them and wasn't afraid to show how uncool I was) 😄 I was a wrestler.. but also in band since 5th grade. I loved music and harmonies so I could appreciate this.

The bulk of my childhood was in the 70’s when AM Top 40 Radio was prevalent. Groups like ABBA, the Bee Gee’s, and so many more dominated the Pop airwaves. While they’re not exactly “cool” to most music fans, they occupied such a big part of my childhood that I’ll never disparage them. ✌️☮️

I'm a huge fan of ABBA, and I listen to prog, punk, jazz, and much more. ABBA's music has been loved, for generations, across many different age groups, and among fans of very different musical genres. This band is definitely *not* just for '70s-era teenagers. This particular song wasn't your vibe, but I would say, don't give up on them. Some of the best songwriters in history have loved ABBA, and they're not wrong!

ABBA is one of those bands that when asked about most people say they can't stand them, but record sales in the gazillions show otherwise. "SOS," "Winner Takes it All," "Waterloo," and, of course, "Dancing Queen" give a sense of their various styles. "Waterloo," though, won several awards and sold over 5 million copies of that single: that's massive back in the day before "click and play."

Abba broke massive in the UK in the 70s and Europe with 5 consecutive no 1 hits they stopped in 1982 and came back with a multi million selling album Voyage 40 years later now thats longevity they currently have a concert running in London with holographic versions of themselves. They are not just a pop group they are living legends

Yeah they were bubblegum/pop as all get out.....but their songs are infectious and when you needed something to brighten your spirits on a gloomy day.....no better group to listen to. I would say there are at least 10 gotta hit songs in the discography.

Their first (international?) single, "Waterloo", was the Eurovision contest winner of 1974. It's pop perfection. Also, I was a choir jock in high school when this came out, and "Take A Chance On Me" -- especially the chorus -- was a swing choir favorite to perform... despite being incredibly difficult to do (which may have been part of the appeal).

They have so many just really good songs, defining in the pop genre! Quite diverse at times too, with multiple giant hits, and beyond. Alway perfectly written, always interesting and with twists and gimmiks And playing, singing and also recording quality on a top level. No wonder they became so big and prominent that it became 'cool' to hate them for a time - but I think if you know just a little about music, that should be impossible
