Lovely ship, and long overdue for NZ's long term operations in the Pacific/Antarctic region. I too am curious about the inflight refueling option for the helicopters. Nice to see a purpose built ship, and not a converted hand me down that some previous ships have been! That RASCO deck is awesome!!
@NighthawkNZ4 жыл бұрын
Inflight refueling means just that, the helo hovers over the deck lowers it's winch, hoists the fueling prob and line, then most of the time the helo will slowly maneuver to port or starboard quarter of the ship and then they will pump the fuel. Once complete hover over the flight deck again and lower the fueling probe... and the helo continues on its way. HMNZS Endeavor use to preform this with the helos as her flight deck was not large enough to handle modern helicopters... You can see here one of the OPV's and a seasprite doing inflight refueling... 4.bp.blogspot.com/-8r6pTm3qnQ8/V84EQcCtklI/AAAAAAAAt0Y/Nqlmh-FbGN4fAMlcnVY1DGEk6J3CnjPWQCLcB/s1600/1651643_-_main.jpg

New Zealand isn't defenceless like some may say. With a decent bit for missile defence and (for the population) decent equipment stock for our Military which If I may say a large focus on the Army. The Navy has several vehicles too that have a range of roles and purposes such as for more direct combat orientated a few frigates and patrol vessels. The Airforce however is lacking though that's where New Zealands missile defence comes to attempt to cover some of those short comings. New Zealands Defence Force does exist and the Military strength indicator for New Zealand puts it right in the middle of all the rated nations of t he world (average). saying it has no defence force is a far cry from the reality. However there are several independent of New Zealands Defence Force and stuff which range in different verdicts on the current NZ military or defence. Mostly criticizing NZ for it's power projecting and condemning Australia for following in suite for following the US Military trend of dubious legal activities such as the Iraq war. These issues weaken New Zealands closest allies if they abstain but if they participate in it then their global ties are then harmed as well as entering a morally gray area which Kiwi's aren't fond off. Also such activities can have consequences for Australia (which may involve NZ needing to support them directly. Ironic considering this is the opposite side of your comment here.). That all being said there is also strong recommendations for more locally produced equipment in the event that NZ is cut off from over sea nations during a war as well as a potential upscaling of their airforce but never have I seen in any of these reviews including the 2020 ones that the Navy was lacking. I should remind you that the United Kingdom has strong considerations on abolishing the use of Tanks and another note is Russia only has a limited production of new generation tanks for the next few years which may put into perspective the NZ Army which at best has NZLAV's for their gunned ground vehicles. Can NZ defence improve? Sure, is there no defence? No.
