Such a tragic loss of old historical architecture that had withstood time, the elements, and wars. Even though it will be rebuilt, the loss of the historic building will be strongly felt forever ☹️☹️

The architecture is still there. Roof and spire (spire was part of 19th c. renovation, so not even remotely original) were destroyed, and portions of the vaulted ceiling were heavily damaged. That's it.

I'm happy that it's being restored. Macron expects and demands it to be finished by 2024 which is very unlikely because it's a lot of work to be made and that's according to experts in construction. It can take up to 15 years and I'm happy if they follow that method so it can be made with great quality.

In reality, the cathedral will be opened for cult in December 2024, but works will continue till 2030 to consolidate the exterior pillars of the choir (bedside). It was due prior to the fire but became mandatory after all the water and destabilization of the fire. Also, it was necessary to have a tight planning : - to remove the old scaffolding and cover the vaults with a temporary roof from the rain - to elevate the wooden roof and covering it from the rain. - also, the treatment of the painting and vaults was better to be done quickly to prevent further damages inside the stones. Also, for special projects like this with the State will, you have the money and everybody is on board : all the best craftmen (compagnons guild workers), the architects, archeologists, historians and even many workers coming from the whole Europe) it is better to have a tight planning compared to a very slow project where you are waiting for one or another company, and your budget explodes. Finally, there is a « tradition » of presidential projects for culture. Every important president would launch a culture project (museum, etc) and this would be done with excellence and quick planning. Mitterand transformed Le Louvre (pyramid etc), Chirac built a museum for Asian African art. Hollande did nothing lol😂 Macron launched a museum for French language (outside Paris for once) in 5 years with the renovation of the last non renovated castle of the king Francois Ier. => It was a huge renovation, creation of roofs, and creation of a museum inside in less than 5 years. And it was a very good work. So after the fire, Macron just added another huge project with the cathedral, and everybody (craftmen, State, historian, architects…) followed. We also have to praise the Militarian general appointed by Macron (General Georgelin) who managed to put everybody on board with this tight planning. Not sure anybody else would have been as successful to create agreement between archeologists, architects, craftmen guilds (compagnons) etc. as everybody had their view and wanted what was the best for the cathedral. PS : there are a lot of renovations in France that take forever to be finalized, and sometimes damages and risks are not taken as seriously as we should. We hope that this project will have positive effects of other projects (knowledge, new know-how, new young men trained with the compagnons guild etc).

Once the side walls at the main piers can be fully stabilized, the main ribs of the central arches can be scaffold formed and replaced with new stones where needed. Once the arch ribs are in place, then the hardest part of the vaulting becomes apparent. Each stone in the vaulting must be cut and fitted exactly with the downside curved to the correct shape and angled in two directions to fit the dual arch of the vault curves. Because of the fire there is distortion that will need to have a stabilizing framework above all the vaulting arches to prevent the outward push on the weakened wall structure. The best lightweight material for 5his permanent purpose is structural aluminum as vaulted trusses above the entire vaulted ceiling before any roof structure or vaulting stones are EMP laced.

The cheerful tone of the anchor is so disrespectful. Not only are you walking into sacred ground, you're litterally walking through a masterpiece. I'm Jewish, I couldn't love being Jewish enough and I'm damm proud of where I come from, but I cried when it happened, I cried when I saw the pictures, and I cried again watching this video. Three times. 1-because of how broken this beautiful place is now. 2-because there's something so powerful about the foundations she now has. She's healing. And those metal monsters are her life support. 3-because I can barely count on 1 hand the things that are sacred to both religious people and artists (only seperated to make a point), and here's this young woman, all smiley and giddy and joking about being afraid of heights and asking shallow questions like will you be done by the Olympics so tourists can enjoy it and bring in more money? And she has no idea how majestic this place is, how deeply it impacted the lives of millions of people who were smart enough to realize just how lucky they were stepping into it (myself included, 4 weeks before the fire), and her overjoyed approach is so dismissive it should practically be a sin. You're embarassing lady, educate yourself. Stat.

That is perfectly right, the reasons being that Notre-Dame is a gothic, then listed, building ,owned and maintained, fairly well ,by the Historic Commission, but its use is that of a catholic church France being strictly a non religious country where freedom of religion is granted, the French State will never interfere into places of worship. On the other hand ,religious leaders are naturally more interested in celebrating services than caring about architecture- -As a result most medieval churches in France are well kept on the outside ,but fairly disappointing when one gets in (Some interior features are listed though, like medieval stained-glass ,the baroque pieta, the only original statue of Notre-Dame,the big organ. and cannot be altered by the clergy ) Nevertheless the new archbishop now seems in a mood to modernize the side chapels with laser lights showing biblical quotations in different languages ,considering the number of non French speaking visitors who come day after day and he wishes to get rid of the disused confessionals (property of the archbishopric ) to replace them with benches of some sort---But there seems to be an outcry on this very place, though nothing is left from the original ornamentation of these chapels . Paris people instead chose to see again the familiar skyline WITH the spire rebuilt exactly the way it was ,and local catholics who truly use the inside of the building are demanding a new and much more beautiful main altar to their archbishop.
