After playing with this yarn, I decided what I like doing when I have yarn left over is to slip stitch until I get to the color change. For me, I can’t even tell that some areas are bulkier than others from slip stitching. I also do the magic circle, I don’t do the extra chain in between clusters, and I also only do 2 chains in the corners.

Hello, Thank you for your tutorial! I'm glad to know that I am not the only one to use a different granny square pattern than what is called for, as it didn't work for me. I started crocheting a long time ago, stopped, then recently started again, so I am unfamiliar with a magic circle, but for the same effect, I have crocheted inside my first slip stitch and pulled it tight. For my squares, I leave an 8" tail, ch4, join, ch3, 11dc in circle, join, ch3, 2dc, ch1,3dc in same sp, skip 3dc, 3dc, ch1,3dc in same sp,and so on to make the corners. It works pretty well for me with a size H hook, as my tension is more loose. Thank you for your tutorial!

I'm new to your channel. I'm 75 and started crocheting at age 14. I've crocheted off and on over the decades. I've done many textile hobbies. I recently returned to crochet because I've seen a big quality change indoing crochet and the yarn available. I have one comment to add, this red heart yarn I would not recommend for a complete beginner! You need to flexibility that you recommended in your video! I'm skipping this yarn for 2 reasons. One I have skin issues with rough yarn. Two I long ago learned to hide ends as i do color changes. With that practice weaving in ends is not an issue. Thanks for all your work analyzing this yarn! Now, color pooling is a new concept to me. I'm going to your playlist on that and learning about it. My passion since returning to crochet is learning amigurumi. I'm fighting health issues and sick a lot. So getting anything done is a slow process. I'm also busy learning geology, lol. Thank you!

When I first saw this yarn, I thought this was a great…until I saw all the bad reviews about everyone’s experience about how difficult it was. By then I had already bought at least two skeins of it, and was regretting it. I was like oh maybe this wasn’t such a good idea after all. And then when I tried it myself, I was super duper frustrated. I had to frog like 1 million times but finally after 2 1/2 hours, I FINALLY got it to match the right colorways on point. Starting my second square, it’s like my hands had a mind of their own, and kind of took over and remembered what I did to get them on point; so the second time, I only had the frog once to get the colorways on time doing exactly as the instructions are written, no substitutions at all. I couldn’t go to bed without doing several more. I’m glad this is actually working out because at first, I only bought two skeins , but when some people were saying they had success with them I went out and bought at least $90 worth more at Joann’s because of the sale.😮😮😂😂 Now, I have to say, I’m addicted and I’m gonna buy as many color ways as I can when they’re back in stock. 😊

Love love love this yarn. Here's the secret: ditch instructions on the back of label. Use a 6.0 (J) crochet hook, chain only two in the corners (instead of three), and leave out the chain one between clusters. This way you will always have yarn of each color left over at the end of your round. Then instead of stressing, simply slip stitch along top until you get to the next start of a cluster where your new color lines up. Works every time without fail and you can't tell. The key is to be flexible and this yarn will make beautiful granny squares for everyone!

I never thought of turning the square, might give that a go. I’ve finally got it to work pretty well, using a 6 mm hook, and the very last round I find I need to tighten up my tension or I won’t have any tail left. I love Nick and granny squares. I love how they look and I think it’s fun to make them. They are great stress reliever because they don’t require much thought. This yarn is not a stress reliever but I think it induces stress. Not what I’m looking for in a granny square. I don’t want to have to think about it. I’m one of those who was taught to do a chain between each cluster so I don’t mind the spaces I tried to do it the other way, and not put the chain in, but it just feels weird to me so I change the way. I love this yarn personally. I do agree Red Heart isn’t the softest but I’m making an exception here. I also agree with the planned pooling theory. I hate their provided pattern. I opted for a 6mm hook, a ch 4 it’s a slip stitch to join then a ch 5. I also omitted the ch 1 in between the clusters and did a ch 2 in the corners. Fiddley sure but it works great for me and I love it. I took a leap of faith and stocked up on this because it’s currently $7.12 at JoAnn Fabric.

I love this video! I've watched many videos about this yarn and yours is by far the best. The fact that you figured out how to do the square like most of us do without a chain in between side clusters and only chain 2 in the corners. Since seeing this yarn come out I wondered how it would turn out pooled on a diagonal like we do with other variegated yarns since the sections of colours is consistent. I guess the fact that the sections are such different sizes makes it so we can not, oh well.

I tend to crochet a little on the looser side so I eliminated the ch 1 inbetween clusters. When I had a tiny bit of the color I didn’t need I did as you did, I did a sl st to take up that color so I could position the new color where I needed it to be. I had to do very little frogging. I bought this yarn and followed all the instructions, undid my work many times then …. I invested my meagre income into a decent hook! I bought a cheaper hook from that popular, Irish-sounding set and … Voila! Comfort and smooth running, made all the difference! My tension improved to the extent that I actually got the colours to ‘fit’! I would recommend buying a GOOD quality hook that fits comfortably in the hand, just one hook from a reputable range, and if you want more, just buy the one hook needed for a given project and, one day, you will have the set of hooks you use regularly, instead of wasting huge amounts on a popular set of hooks, most of which you’ll never use! I should add, it’s taken me 80 years to figure this out! 😂😅🤣🇬🇧👋

Curiously i did find a top down with the granny stitch i would like to make. Alas, i have 2 graphgahns to make n a mosaic pillow❣ I just made my first basket that was a raccoon. I've done planned pooling projects so I got this to work (through the "frogging method"). In some rounds I went up half a millimeter in hook size if it wasn't turning out. Looking at my blanket, I really can't see which rounds were worked in the larger hook size. Also, I'm able to close the circle when I weave in the end. I also worked the last round, being sure to keep a few inches of that last color to make more than a four inch tail for the beginning of the next square. Just sharing my experience!

I am glad it works for you, but I followed your directions, crocheted as loosely as I could, and still had too much leftover yarn after each ROW. I think I will just think of it as just another variegated yarn

Oh no! Did you try going up a hook size (or two)? It’s really a smooth make once you hit your stride. I just know you can do it! 😁💜

What brand of hooks are you using?
@ItsTimeforYarn9 ай бұрын
Hi there. I’m not sure what the brand is since the packaging didn’t say. I got these from Temu but I have seen them on Amazon as well. I like working with them for short projects. They are comfortable but I have other hooks I like for longer projects.

Years ago the red heart pattern called for three shades of blue.. the squares were about 6" one color ok second color was 5 and half But the third color was close to 3 weight yarn the square was 1 and half smaller . I was very upset about , the big difference in the size should be #4 weight yarn but one could pass for #3weight. I just put them all in a bag ,and never used Red HEART agin. I know yarn veries in size ,but i have never seen such a big difference. Red Heart has a good idea, but not for me

I know I’m late to the game and this yarn was discontinued, but it would have driven me nuts. It seems like an endless game of yarn chicken. I love how you made it work, but, honestly, I think it’s just easier to make granny squares the traditional way.

I enjoy the yarn but I understand your point of view as well. It’s definitely not for everyone. 😁💜

Im sorry i keep commenting on this video. Instead of chaining 2 then slip stitch into chain and not having to turn your work do a half double crochet then your hook is at center of corner. Just a suggestion 😊❤

I have found that if I turn my work after every round, the square doesn't twist. Granny squares are gorgeous, I just hate seeing that twist. Love that you showed the turn and no chains in between the clusters. I like smaller gaps as well. Thank you for all your videos and help. Happy New Year🎉

Couldn't you also use up extra yarn by slip stitching to the next space?
@ItsTimeforYarn10 ай бұрын
Absolutely. That would be a great way to use up yarn. 😁💜

Hello. You are the 3rd video I have watched today on this yarn. What I noticed was that there are bits of colour bleeds running onto the next colour. The white has bits of pink! I do not like seeing this. The last video had the same problem on the last 2 colours. So I have decided to not even attempt to buy this yarn,as much as I first got excited to think about not weaving in all those different colour ends. ( even if I got my tension correct after a few tries. ) I feel that RedHeart needs to do some quality control and perhaps can correct this problem, 🤔🧑🏻🦰🇨🇦

Why would you do three in corner snd three slip stiches then three more in corner?😊
@CRAFTBOSS577 ай бұрын
I meant chain
@ItsTimeforYarn7 ай бұрын
I was following the pattern that came with the yarn. This helps create the corner and make it a square.

Seems like the only option we have is to make one size square only per the yarn instructions? Your selected skein color looks ok but some of their colors they have are awful. I don’t know who selects that company’s color scheme, but they need to stop. lol…. You’re doing a good video for them.
@michellenash68025 ай бұрын
Why ch 1 between clusters along side?
@ItsTimeforYarn5 ай бұрын
I was following the pattern that they had on the label since that is what the yarn was engineered to make. The extra chain creates a wider space between the clusters and can make the square bigger.
@TheSafierdrgn9 ай бұрын
How on earth did you do that slip knot?? I even watched it at 25% playback speed and I still don't get it! 😭
@ItsTimeforYarn9 ай бұрын
It’s a technique that I was taught when I was learning to crochet. I have never used any other way. I can make a KZbin short explaining it. It will take a couple of days since my schedule is booked right now but be in the lookout for it. 😁💜

Hi there! I got it to color pool but it does take some "encouragement." I have to adjust the clusters of the last color in order to get it to work.
