Hey homie, I know this is a year old now but if it makes you feel any better, Paul Desmond probably wouldn't have hit all of those changes on this song anyway. Some of those chords are more of a comping flare and you don't need to automatically contextualize them. The important beats to hit are the CbMAj, BbMin, Abmin, and Gmaj, which should hopefully make it a little more manageable

Merci !

Does anybody have any reccomendation on how to improv after the first run down of the whole chorus lick? I'm getting back into music after 4 years out of high school, and I'm not particularly comfortable with playing jazz improv. Sheet music, I could do. but having to think on the spot, will throw me off beat and I'll have a hard time jumping back in, I am experimenting with 5/4 right now, as I am already used to the usual 4/4, 3/4 2/4, etc.
@topcat87402 жыл бұрын
hi, you can try Eb- pentatonic all the time. you can play F#maj/Eb- scale. you can alternate scale Dbmaj (Eb- dorian) in the A section, and F#maj in the B section. you can use chord arpegios, arpegio substitution and other things. i suggest to listen george benson version. bad english...sorry

What version of the song is this? In the Dave Brubeck version it doesn't seem to have these cool cord changes, but that is the only version I can find anywhere. Does anyone know where to find a link to the full Paul Desmond version of the song?
@caprise-music67222 ай бұрын
Great BT, but i think it would be better if it stayed on the main groove for longer, instead of going to the chorus all the time. That would be more like the original live version of this song so that Paul Desmond and Dave Brubeck etc etc can play a solo.

@@hobbedgoblin10 Trust me, it's the way you're counting, the chord changes are actually ok, it's the way we count them that screws with the timing. Here's what got me through it: www.jazzguitar.be/blog/how-to-play-take-5-chords-on-guitar/ The trick is to play what the piano is playing - i.e. arpeggios and chords, not just chords. Eb blues (Minor pentatonic with the added b5) works well over the Ebm Bb-7 vamp. Over the B section, I would recommend using the full Eb minor (aeolian) scale because the pentatonic is missing important notes. For the last two bars of the B section (Fm7(b5) and Bb7) Eb harmonic minor is implied here.
