Good morning from Huffman Texas! I am still cleaning up after the Hurricane. I lost my whole garden, I had six trees fall in my yard two huge trees on my whole garden. It has been a devastating blow for me and my family. I'm a single mom and we lost all our freezer and fridge. My canning saved us.

I am so sorry to hear that! I know how you feel, when hurricane Irma came through several years ago, we lost so many trees, structures, and it was a mess! Thankfully by the grace of God all the animals were ok and we were ok. I'm thankful y'all are ok, I know this is going to be tough but you will make it through. I will pray for y'all! ❤

This is THE best canned salsa recipe I've tried. I promise you won't be disappointed. ANNIES SALSA 8 cups tomatoes, peeled, chopped and drained 2 1/2 cups chopped onion 1 1/2 cups chopped green pepper 3 - 5 chopped jalapenos or to taste 6 cloves minced garlic 2 tsp cumin 2 tsp pepper 1/8 cup canning salt 1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro 1/3 cup sugar 1 cup vinegar 16 oz. tomato sauce 16 oz tomato paste Mix all ingredients, bring to a boil, boil 10 minutes. Pour into hot jars, Process 15 minutes for pints and 20 minutes for quarts in a hot water bath. You may increase the amount of hot peppers if you want more heat, but reduce the green pepper or onion by the same amount to retain the acidity of the recipe and keep it safe to can. You don't have to use jalapenos, you can use any hot pepper you have on hand. I like habaneros but they are VERY hot. Be careful. The tomato sauce and paste are for consistency only, I like a salsa so thick it sits on my chip, you can leave it out but it is "runnier" without it.

If you are starting to get a good bit of rain, you want to get as many of the good red tomatoes as possible and any that may have started blushing. After so much heat and dry weather, the ones that are ripe may split if you get a good rain storm now. The humidity I believe, contributes to the blight issues.

Thank you for showing your disappointments in the garden. It definitely encourages me not to give up when you've had so much experience with tomatoes. Here in Texas I'm really struggling to do well with tomatoes, but I love them so much that I keep trying. Same with cucumbers I haven't had a success since about 2013. However I have loofah coming out of my ears! 🙏🙏🙏

I'm in Alabama and had tons of tomatoes and cucumbers in June and early July but they're dying out now. Too hot to make blooms and they're just dying back. You need to start as early as possible because after it hits 90 you pretty much don't get any more blooms. Next year I'm trying a shade cloth and a fan to see if I can extend it a little farther.

when your done roasting your peppers throw them in a paper bag and seal the bag for a few minutes the peppers steam themselves making the skin come off real easy to peal off by laying your pepper on a flat surface and running the back of your knife over them makes the skin come off real easy.....

Crazy weather down here in Lincoln County too and our garden is just looking awful. Our corn is already done. We’ve had a great crop of green beans and cucumbers, but our shelling beans are already done. Our tomatoes had nasty blossom end rot but they’ve improved as we’ve worked on them, but they’re just about died off overall. All our squash got killed off by vine borers. Our garlic and onion did well. Pretty mixed overall we’ll call it and I’m hoping the fall crops will do better.

We're holding a potato experiment this year as well. We had a pile of hay that we were using to mulch our garden. The extra hay that we didn't use, we tossed some seed potatoes into the pile and have been adding additional hay as needed. So far they look really good. The only problem we're having is keeping the chickens out of it. Thanks for sharing.

I'm in north NJ. Been picking tomatoes since beginning of July. Our plants are massive and we have not pruned any of the tomatoes. The weather has been so hot and little rain so a daily chore of watering everyday. We only grow heirloom varieties and seed save. Our worst tomato this year is the San Marzano. We planted them in barrels and they did get some blossom end rot and I'm thinking it's just that the soil dried out quicker. My favorite roma tomato is a Striped Roma, super meaty and twice the size of the san marzano. This year we are growing a pink heirloom beefsteak. I mix all our tomatoes and make ketchup or soup with them. Better than store bought ketchup. We never use any store fertilizer. Our homemade compost is high in nitrogen with all the chicken and duck poo added to it. Comfrey tea is our fertilizer if we need it. I make what we call a cooked salsa....It has a variety of tomatoes with skin and seeds, habanero peppers, peaches or pineapple chunks, green peppers, onions, garlic lots of oregano, salt, brown sugar and apple cider vinegar. Cook it down til all the veggies are soft but still chunky. Omg it's so good. Been making it for well over 20 years and it cans up beautifully. (Rebel canning I guess but we love it)

After blight I put the garden beds away for winter with a good amount of lime. It thus far has been a no show this year. Learned that trick from a Amish canning gardening book. We only put in about a dozen tomatoes plants, but found many volunteers from last year.. Which turned out to be heartier and more loaded with fruit. I usually have abundance in green beans but, not this year...burnt leaves from to many 80 degree days. We will be relying on last years pantry abundance. Last year abundancein winter squash this year less than 20 of three varieties. Very different year.

We've been gardening 10yrs & this is the first year we've ever had birds get in our corn & we plant corn every year, but we've also had abundance in other areas so the way I look at it be thankful for what God has blessed you with for that year because food is food & it's all a blessing. You're right you gotta clean off your machinery and your lawn mowers especially otherwise they rushed out really fast I used to always wash off the lawn mower we had one lawn mower that was aluminum cast very heavy but it was a walk behind it used to have a hose adapt on it hook the hose up to it let your lawn mower run and it washes off all the old grass it's a very good idea but you also got to make sure that that water dries up But one thing about that aluminum cash lawn mower the paint peeled like crazy was like look like battery acid but it wasn't I guess you could have cleaned it up and repainted it But the paint on just your norm stays on way better

I live a few miles south of Dothan Alabama and I'm pretty sure they use Slocomb tomatoes for their salsa. Slocomb Alabama has a whole festival around their tomatoes, it's the best tomatoes you can buy for fresh eating and canning, have no idea what cultivar they grow as they keep it secret. Saving seeds from their tomatoes won't give you the same tomato, people have tried I'm pretty sure.

I Love to listen to Country People talk. I work with a few Northern folks and they talk a lot of junk and look down on our dialect but it’s beautiful to me. Something about a Southern Lady talking. I was describing a young guy that works for me and I said he is a smart young man and he is a hard worker but he has a lot of Youngin in him that you all know means he has some growing up to do. The Plant Manager said what’s a Youngin and I said he has some growing up to do. He said he has never heard that word. He was from Ohio. He calls a Water fountain a Bubbler and a Pepsi or Mountain Dew is a soda. I don’t understand some of the Northern sayings.

HELLO!! Megan I LOVE to follow you and your family 🤗 You might try putting your tomatoes in the plugged sink and pour the boiling water over them. Then drain after skin has released. So easy. Same with peaches

Hey guys, love watching your channel, This year, for the first time, I put an egg in each of my tomato holes, beat it up and planted my tomato plant and then watered well. Then as they started, I kept the lower limbs cut off so nothing is touching the ground, awesome tomato harvest for me this year, I live in NW Ga. Hugs

Guys, I had the same problem with my Cherokee tan tomatoes and my patty pan squash with blossom end rot. This is my first year growing in Vego type raised beds and didn’t have my irrigation tape down yet so I was using the telescope sprinklers. I contacted Texas A&M about it and they said tomatoes and squash are prone to blossom end rot when the leave are wet from sprinkle watering. I started hand watering with a wonder and the blossom end rot stopped happening so it saved the rest of my plant and my newly planted tomatoes and squash. They said with the excessive heat and watering from the top with sprinklers was the issue. They can’t handle the wet heat. Just an fyi from my neck of the woods.

Voles ate my potatoes over here on this side of the mountain. I despise the hard work and they eat my taters. You guys are a pleasure to watch working together on your farm.

Hello from a grandmother in sw Virginia. Don't know if yall know this so thought I would share. For blossom endrot about six weeks before my tomato's start to put out I take seven eggshells and feel a quart jar with white vinegar and put the eggshells in it. The first sign of trouble put about five or six table spoons in a gallon of water and spray your tomato's top to bottom and around the ground. It's always worked for me stops blossom endrott in it's tracks. I love yalls video's gives this old lady hope for our future. Be blessed

Tomatoes and potatoes are in the same family and compete for the same nutrients.
