4 minutes and 47 seconds with a tangent defending your brother from armchair doctors is pretty damn good for someone who's been taken up 20 notches this year.

The thing is, 5-10 minutes is still short for modern KZbin standards. For lack of a better term, this channel feels "old school". It's not 60 second TikToks or Shorts, or 40 minute explainers. As long as your videos are shorter than 10 minutes, I think most of us will be happy. And you two have become so concise over the years that even without a rule, I think most of your videos will end up being about 5 minutes long.

As someone who is new to the channel, I definitely would not want to see the 4 minute rule reinstated (I just learned about the rule yesterday). My preferred YT content is 2hr+ breakdown videos on various topics and media. So a video under 10 minutes feels like a short to me (which is not a bad thing).

one thing i really love about not having the rule is that we can have small moments. like the click of you stopping the recording- i love when youtubers don’t cut that out. it’s such a satisfying sound, but it also feels sincere, like we’re getting a small peek behind the curtain. for a second, the script stops and we are still here together. ❤

While also leveling up with them. I vote for the freedom of longer videos, and if a day comes where it feels right to you and Hank to bring back the rule, that will be a beautiful return too

Problem: when noting that a vlogbrothers video is over four minutes, my mental expectation is of something extraordinary, be it for good or ill. A four minute post gives me the feeling that the world is operating correctly for a moment, even if viewing it leaves me convinced otherwise. It packs more significance to me than the terrorist threat level or the air quality index. Worse, if they change it, I will have to make a personal, internal adjustment and I'm getting kinda old for that.

John, I think it’s really important to remember that when you and Hank started making videos, the “speed up” feature… didn’t exist. At this point, you can feel free to make a 15 minute video if you want. If I feel like you’re rambling, I’ll just speed you up, it’s what I do to everybody else 😂 Plus, there’s literally millions of us in the community, you can lean on us and count on us not to leave. We can handle your weight friend. ❤
@Jackallleo
@Jackallleo 11 ай бұрын
I agree in principle but speeding up is bad here! It shows that the video isn’t worthy of the time they’ve put into it and I think there should at least be a 10-minute rule to limit this kind of thing - being relatively concise is important and an integral part of their format. Basically as a devotee of this community I never want to condense my time here!
@tomisaacson2762
@tomisaacson2762 11 ай бұрын
@@JackallleoI agree, but only because I don't come to vlogbrothers videos strictly for the informational content. That's just one part of the appeal. I watch at 1x for the vibes. Plus their content is thoughtful and leaves me with stuff to contemplate. I see speeding up videos as analogous to referencing, skimming, or just enjoying a book as opposed to closely reading every line. It's not about not valuing the time put into the work, but adjusting my use of the work according to what I'm using it for. I've never read a textbook cover to cover, for example, but I use and value them a lot. A lecture with mostly familiar material I'll watch at >2x. An infotainment video with some unfamiliar content will be anywhere from 1-2x depending on the ratio of new info to entertainment (and of course the speed and style of the speaker). Comedy, music, art, most movies, etc. are at 1x.
@rkatecraig

I’ve never actually felt the need to speed up one of Hank or John’s videos. My statement was meant as reassurance that they can make videos as lengthy as they want, I’ll still watch them. And I’m not inconvenienced by the time it takes because if I’m THAT pressed for time, I can speed it up. If that makes sense.

I trust you both to make good use of the viewer's time. Once you started regularly going over 4 minutes a while back it sort of dawned on me that the 4 minute limit is part of the reason I've gone for over ten years without missing a single video. It really is a perfect length, there is always time for it, and it still feels substantial enough to be enjoyable and thoughtful. Since the videos started going over I've had more than a few times where I've gone "okay, this is long, I'll watch this later" and then felt like I had to go back and watch it much later. I'm gonna vote to keep the 4 minute. But ultimately you guys do what makes you feel best. When everything shut down in 2020, nerdfighteria was a lighthouse of consistency: the one thing that didn't change. But, as you say, we aren't in charge of the notch situation. 🎉 I'm busy and love the regularity of these videos. I build them into my work schedule and have for a decade now. But my world isn't so rigid that a hard and fast rule is needed. I fully support a modified 4ish minute rule. Say what you need to say, be brief, be consistent, be honest, and be hopeful. Thanks!!!

Hi John! I trust your and Hank's judgement completely on how long your videos are. If it cuts down on time scripting and editing or even just gives you the space to say what you want to say, go for it! Nerdfighteria would honestly be able to deal with fewer videos too if you needed that change. We care about you as people, not as content. May your notches soon begin to step themselves down. Wishing you all the best! ❤

Even with the 4-minute rule suspended, I think it is clear that the content and quality of your videos are not compromised. I love the 4-minute rule because I never feel as though I can't fit a video into my schedule with it. However, your writing has undoubtedly improved due to years of the 4-minute rule, so that even with it suspended, a majority of videos have still been under 6 minutes (a very consumable amount of time). I like the idea of a time cap, but I think increasing that cap permanently to 5-6 minutes or so is well worth it. Keeps a challenge, takes it down a notch, but we still receive quality content because you've practiced giving it to us in such a concise way for years. Forever grateful for this community and the way you've built it up!

You both have been producing great content for so many years that I believe you can trust your own judgement when it comes to deciding what is essential to keep in a video. And I'm pretty sure most of nerdfighteria will continue watching these videos whether they are 4 or 45 minutes. It's perfectly reasonable at this point to try out longer videos and see whether the 4-minute format is still helpful or not, without having to undergo punishments like eating blended happy meals, giving dozens of peeps to strangers, or spending 14 hours in a Target.

“You do not get to decide the notch situation” is a very important life lesson. I learned it rather young with chronic illness and disabilities. But I can choose how I see the world and what I try and do. So I try and enjoy everything I possibly can. And I try and share as much love, knowledge, kindness and compassion as possible. Because that’s what I would like most from other humans.

1) I'm genuinely happy to see you kinda joyful. Your smile at the end warmed my heart after many weeks of heavier (although excellent) videos. 2) This style of videos where you reflect on the (recent) past may be my favorite kind. I love listening to you putting previous certainties into perspectives. 3) I like the 4-minute format because my attention span had been considerably shortened by social media content, and anything longer feels too long to be worth watching. Except for your videos! They are so great! Make them as long as you want!

It’s up to y’all of course. The 4 minute rule is definitely a great way to keep engagement, but sometimes more time is needed. I think as long as y’all don’t go over 10-15 minutes, it will be good. I have no doubts that no matter how long the video is y’all will make great use of every second.
