This song has an interesting genesis. The tune was composed by Bill Danoff and Taffy Nivert while driving along Clopper Road in Maryland outside of Washington. DC. Back then it was a fairly rural road, but development has caught up to much of it today. The duo could not make words rhyme with Maryland, so they then tried Massachusetts where they were from, which also failed. They played it for their friend John Denver (before he was famous) who thought the song would be a hit, so he and Danoff and Nivert re-worked the words, finally settling on West Virginia in lieu of Maryland or Massachusetts. None of them had been to West Virginia nor knew much about it. Most of the Shenandoah River and Blue Ridge mountains, for instance, are in Virginia. I drive on and by Clopper Road occasionally and think about its inspiring this famous song.

Hi guys! I am very grateful for this version of 'Country Roads'. My grandmother (93)just passed away last week after getting diagnosed with cancer just one month ago. One week before the diagnosis she was still doing the groceries ON HER BIKE! So losing her so suddenly was extremely difficult. 'Country Roads' was her number one song. I am a leadsinger and guitarist of a coverband myself and every time we sang that song, I always dedicated it to her like: 'my dearest grandmother, this one's for you. ❤️' And she always sang along, even though she didn't know any English! 😅. Anyway, as we were planning her funeral, we wanted to play 'Country Roads' but we preferred an acoustic version of it because she just liked that so much. And then this version appeared. At the very moment I opened KZbin to search for a cover, I saw this very video. I am a long time subscriber and absolutely love what you do. I also bought tickets to see you in Amsterdam at the 26th of September. I don't even know if you will read this, but if you do I would like to tell you this: THANK YOU! From the bottom of my heart. We played this video with pictures of my grandmother in the background and my whole family were very impressed by this version. It was perfect. I hope you will play this in Amsterdam. It would mean the world to me. Because my grandmother was the world to me. THANK YOU SO MUCH! ❤️ Robin van Walsem from The Netherlands. 🇳🇱

Denver, in my humble opinion, was one of the greates songwriters of our gen (going back a ways here). I love especially albums of his done live with an audience. He was so humble, so genuine. songs that ordinary people can relate to was what he did. and it's still important.
@Gingerjake2
@Gingerjake2 2 жыл бұрын
@@tomlederle1960 He was indeed genuine. You are right. What you saw, that was John. I met him...in fact sat with him at a table for an entire evening in Aspen Colorado. My friends there were selling their little soup & sandwich shop & Johns ex band mate John Summers was buying the shop for his wife. We went to a place called Jake's Alley - a pub in the basement beneath a restaurant there...John S was playing with his new band & we went to listen. Who shows up but John D & our host invited him to sit with us. A life altering evening for me.

Decade older and at CU Boulder in early 70s he was the opposite of cool - largely because Rocky Mountain High infested "Our" mountains with wannabe hippie tourists from wherever. Even then I loved this song on the QT and I remember seeing Mary Travers at Tulagis where she let on one of my all time favorite songs Leaving On A Jet Plane had been written by him. He was a true icon to use an overused word that definitely applies to him.

To my left, and well above the horizon too, is our most visited. One could even say, a good friend...MARS. And two and a half feet, in my hand is...No. Not a planet, but a STAR...Reina Del Cid. My family was really into that song. My mom's parents had lived in West Virginia for 3 years after they retired. My mom & I were set to do an instrumental (clarinet and tenor sax) of it in late spring of '71. But the bowling banquet had to be shortened because of an incoming hurricane in New Jersey. This was definitely the best cover I've ever heard.

Thanks so much for this, Reina 💖 My mom died two weeks ago, on July 16. She was a John Denver fan and my two younger brothers and I grew up with his music. The night my mom went into labor with me on March 10, 1975, John had a TV special airing with special guests Jacques Cousteau and Danny Kaye. Mom didn’t want to miss it so she had my dad set up a tape recorder next to their TV before they left for the hospital. Years later, when I was, I think, 19, Mom and I saw John in concert at what was then Deer Creek Amphitheater, an outdoor venue in Noblesville, Ind., near Indianapolis. She loved music, had great taste in it, and continued to catch live shows in her beloved Bloomington, Ind., when she could, even in her later years. She was the most voracious reader I ever knew, and she’d have loved your songwriting and no doubt would have been delighted to see you perform. Best wishes, Reina, and thanks for sparking some fond memories of Mom 🥰
