Thanks Tim - another superb video - all the more entertaining and engaging with your dry humour thrown in. I have been doing PFLs in a PA28 today during my post Covid checkout to return to solo flight after 3 months --> nothing like as complex as what you have been describing with the Hawk but the key messages are the same in terms of planning, knowing the drills off by heart and thinking ahead. I used the ‘next steps verbalisation technique' (if I may call it that) from your Tornado video on my check flight today and it definitely helped. Thanks again Colin

I have that X-Plane Hawk, and I am a bit Hawk nerdy when it comes to flight modelling in X-Plane. I found some awful errors in the model, so you are doing well to demonstrate these failures. I fixed the flight model issues in Plane Maker on my Hawk. I have not fixed anything to do with the parking brake.

@@FastJetPerformance The JustFlight Hawk has only one wing element in X-Plane. This can never be accurate. I saw it made vapour too easily at the tips, and looked into it. We can understandably get no aerofoil data out of BAe, but reverse engineering from bits of info here and there, and the T1 /T1A manual, we can get closer, but we need at least 4 wing elements in X-Plane to even get close to Hawk performance.

@FastJetPerformance

Aircraft path more predictable on ground, ejecting airborne means jet could hit an orphanage/bad press for RAF. Also, the jet does stop better in real life than this and, for real, all of those serials would have probably seen the jet stop or into the barrier at the right speed, the jet glides too well in this sim but I have 10 years of practising these for real and I can't adjust the picture for a sim, my brain doesn't want to make that transition.

Excellent vid Sir. Your making flight simming more enjoyable, although I do use the Mk1 in FSX 😉 Quick question - you talk about how the aircraft glides and mention it's better in the sim than real life. Which of the 2 Hawk types as the better glide? My own guess would be the T1 solely due to the shape of the wing. Can't remember the technical name for it now sorry. Anyhoo thanks again Sir. Fascinating stuff again. I'm waaaaay too old to be a pilot now, but at one time in my youth I did briefly consider following in the footsteps of my grandfather and uncle into the RAF (although neither were pilots). Always loved casual flying in flight sims, but it's really interesting to see one in the hands of a real fast jet pilot. In a sense, I'm glad I never did join the RAF - I don't think my brain could handle that many calculations per second! 🤣

I learned those Turnbacks 2 kinds in 1996. I think you are forgetting to use flaps when too high or fast, and also forgetting to do S Turns when you are high. Try like that.. You can also do Fast Forward Slips. Try those 3 things if too high or too fast. I have landed Cherokee for real with 14 knots tailwinds on a 4,000 runway. For real.. from 600 agl only on climb out.

Great video and an incredibly important topic. Things happen really fast with loss of engine on takeoff, even in little civilian planes. If you haven’t practiced your drills, you will not rise to the occasion, you will become a statistic. For people who think you are talking too fast, they should try talking to air traffic control over NY!

Saw this video on YT today about a Hawk T1 sortie out of valley (back in 2014 ish) and noticed the standby attitude indicator not caged before takeoff (has a significant offset the the main AI) and throughout the flight the standby/2nd altimeter is set to a different baro pressure to the main altimeter! Is this a failure to do the pre-takeoff or in-flight altimeter setting or are they ever set to be QNH on one and Valley QFE on the other? Interested in your thoughts as your SIM flights you always match the alimeters (for backup). Here's the video ... kzbin.info/www/bejne/o2nLdJmdrbl_Z9k

Really enjoyed the sharp briefing. Emergency landings were targeting 1/3 touch down, not achieved due excessive height/float hence overrun and a/c destroyed. Understand anxiety not to land short, but is there a way to wash off excess height without overspeed and save both pilot and aircraft? Thanks. Yak pilot.

@FastJetPerformance 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, sideslip but it must stop by 300 ft - it isn't hugely effective and can alter the picture you're used to. We also teach S-turns but it's very easy to fall below 150 kts doing this and you'll get close to an accellerated stall. The sim doesn't lose speed like in the real aircraft so most of these would have stopped or entered the barrier safely.

Excellent vid , thank you .With these views IMO its easier to read instruments than VR , although VR vids are good for where you're looking .Idea.X-Plane 11 can record your flights , then save as replays/situations.You could do a couple of perfect circuits /Mach loop etc in Tonka /Hawk then share/upload.Providing users have same version of XP (11.41)/aircraft and folder structure it should be possible to then load the replay flights in users own set up.That way VR & screen users alike can experience the flight in every detail (in theory)and can be analysed.Only downside would be the absence of the invaluable, colourful commentary.( though could be mp3 download)Just a thought should you get a spare minute.Thanks again for taking time do to these vids.

Enjoyed that Tim - I liked that you put the emphasis on the actions we need to take and on nailing the muscle-memory for where your hands should go so that you really are ready to deal with an issue. I'm sure you have a long list for future video ideas, but I think a talk-through of an IP-to-target run would entertain - plus it'll be a nice test for the scenery.

Watching this makes me realise the temptation to turn back after an EFATO when there's not enough airspeed. Prior to the first "ejection" it felt like there was plenty of time to turn back but that's just not the case.

You should do some Hawk action out of RAF Leeming, 100 squadron. Aggressors ;)

Silliest question I ever asked on taxi out for a pax trip was "so what's a PEFATO?". Stomach is still somewhere over Rhosneigr ten years later! Brilliant content!

I was lucky to see some turn backs to overshoot from the rear seat during the early 90's. Managed 26 Hawk pax rides between 2 tours at Valley and 1 at Chivenor. Great fun! Very little chance of a pax ride now never mind doing anything sporty like PFLs or turn backs.

Would you side slip a fast jet if you see you are too high during emergency landing
@FastJetPerformance
@FastJetPerformance 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, you can but you need to have a height to stop by and it isn't all that effective.

@@FastJetPerformance Cool man thx. PLS maybe make a video once of what one CANT do in fighter jets...the kind of stuff that can cause u to loose control or maybe a wing drop on short final or anything dangerous thats a BIG nono.

haha, this is awesome. Whether you see it as a deep critique of flight simulations, or entertaining and interesting instruction on how jet planes actually work - really good stuff.

So in regards to drill number 6. Do pilots at RAF Leeming have to practice this (like the reds do at Scampton) as well? as they use single runway ops as there’s only 1 runway?

Out of interest Tim, in an EFATO situation would you be required to verbalize the approximate ejection location for the record? I assume you are trying to push the aircraft into an approximately "safe" location but if it ends up in someone's living room and questions get asked at least your intentions are on the record in case the lawyers start getting involved.

Fast Jet Performance Thanks !, I’m just going around researching everywhere as we’re trying to set up to VR flight sims for our CCF RAF Section. So far we have the VR grob tutor and we’ve set up some Orthotiles but the ORBX scenery looks astonishingly nice. Thank you for taking your time to make these videos 👍🏼
