Guys, this is a bit of a test, I used OBS which is good for live streams but doesn't seem to love recording my Nvidia card (1080ti 11GB) - I'll use the GeForce Experience ShadowPlay from now on and put the Picture In Picture in post production.
I apologise for the dropped frames.

I was a big fan of the VR. It was interesting to see your head movements as they would be in real life (or as close as possible).

Hi Tim, I love these videos. It's a real eye-opener to hear your decision making. I had always thought the training flights around Wales were on rails with everything pre-planned. Its allot more dynamic. I find your ATC calls so funny, it reminds me of walking home from school with my Brother. He would talk himself down as if on a radar surveillance approach to the front door. He went onto be a BA captain so it obviously worked !! Regarding DCS its a great game that I dabble in. The graphics are great and the Harrier module is fun. The world is a little dead though and after trying to learn the systems of a jet it becomes a bit hollow. So I will be really interested to see how you use it. If the airbases feel a bit like you are the sole survivor of a zombie apocalypse I'm sure you could get someone to fire up the mission editor and add some interest. If you drop me a message I would be happy to spend some time sorting something out.

The VR was so much more helpful at showing me your "Pilot brain" thought pattern in real time. I had no issue with the video quality on the earlier VR videos. It's reassuring that you found the 2D challenging, since as an armchair pilot had always found the lack of peripheral vision frustrating. I can't drive racing simulations very well either for similar reasons.

Tim, thanks for the great videos. I was turned away from an RAF career as I was too tall to eject apparently which cheered my mum up a lot. I've been a keen flight simmer (and also have a PPL) since the days of wire frame graphics (yes I'm old), and currently use DCS with VR having used trackIR. At the risk of repeating previous comments, IMHO, for your purposes, I agree VR is the way to go as the viewer gets to see your natural head movements and reactions as the expert. TrackIR is great and you'll get prettier videos (and maybe a better frame rate) but we'll lose your immersion. Incidentally we've just started using 3D microscopes for our eye surgery which is a game changer for training. Thanks again - keep up the good work!

Track IR I think would be a really good compromise, It has as much controlability as VR only lacking the depth perception. Looks nice for the viewer as well
@zentriceggofficial
@zentriceggofficial 4 жыл бұрын
Actually it lacks more than that. VR gives LIFE-SIZE 3d imagery. Track IR just gives you an exaggerated scale mouse-look. Viewing on a tiny, compressed 2d monitor.
@staubsauger2305
@staubsauger2305 4 жыл бұрын
@@zentriceggofficial - VR may be a better experience for Tim, for sure, due to the spatial awareness it gives. However, if you consider the *audience* then TrackIR gives a better picture for the viewers as the monitor resolution is higher and the video looks better. Myself I play this back on either a large 4k monitor or TV and the pixellation of low-res VR makes my eyes bleed :) Once Tim tries TrackIR he'll be able to make the call. I personally find VR great for the immersion but not so good for the switchology as you can't see your hands with your physical MFDs, so I use VR for tootling around DCS but use TrackIR when its time for multiplayer online.

I am a poor guy, and can't afford VR, and use a cheap copy of track IR that I bought in Thailand, and it's great for head tracking, obviously not as immersive as VR, but you should use whatever you're comfy with, and as an ex Fighter pilot, I'm sure you get much better SA than in 2D, I'd say go back to using what you're comfortable with!!

Another great vid Tim, cheers. +1 for using VR as well mate, is very useful for seeing your head movement and what you are looking at/focusing on etc which is very interesting. I personally fly in VR as well so the picture doesn't bother me, and yea is hard to go back to a 2d screen after flying in VR! What kind of generation are we bring up lolol. Imagine how they would lose it if they saw the flight sim graphics we had growing up in the 80's! All good with popping out into 'pilot face time' now and then as well.

Another upvote for VR, loved being able to see your thought process. The PiP was nice, feels like you can talk a while without flying as it's still engaging to watch. Fwiw I also found it difficult to get nvenc working well with OBS to get a smooth result (motion looked juddery). I also now use ShadowPlay to record most footage - just use another package called Action 4 if shadowplay has issues (rarely happens). If you wanted to pick that up as a backup as well it's on Steam and is often in their sales - think I paid maybe £20-ish.

Another quality presentation. The realism is fantastic to know about coming from actual military pilots. C W Lemoine who flew the F/A-18. Uses VR on DCS for tutoring on weapons training, combat training, formation flying etc, was so convinced that he was actually flying a Hornet that he would press his hand up on the canopy whilst carrying out tight turns to keep a visual on his opponent in a virtual dog fight. The memories must have came flooding back similar to your GR1 experience Tim. What are your thoughts Tim on the new BAE Systems Tempest fighter jet that will be capable of unmanned flight, Is this the future, is this where flight simulators could possibly aid the future fighter pilot? Thanks.

You should have flown the Nimrod's Sir. Plenty of tea on them....and chilli....and cream cakes 😉 DCS is another of the sims I fly, mainly the A10C, Spitfire, F15 and now the F16 although I do also have the Harrier. However trying to remember start up and systems on all of them can be a bit of a mare! I fly with a good few ex-military types , mostly just for fun, flying missions a few of us have made, though I do enjoy trying ILS approaches in proper mud. The ATC isn't the best. I think BMS has the best ATC in all the sims I've flown (oh and there used to be a Hawk T1 in DCS. Unfortunately the 3rd party developer folded and with all the recent upgrades in DCS they had to bin it, which was a shame as it was my favourite aircraft. Even tested it for the Devs. Put up a vid on here with it. Nice wee bird). PS - great to see I'm not the only one excited at "choo-choos" in sims. I've spent hours looking for, following or shooting them up (sorry). Great fun 😁 Take care sir. Stay safe.

I’m also not quite sure why people didn’t like the VR. Someone may have told you this already Tim, but those of us who are also DCS addicts have been trying to get someone to develop a Tornado for as long as it existed. I wish maybe Just Flight used their knowledge to do it. We had a Hawk for a while. It started off beautifully but the company that developed it went bust and there was no one to continually develop in the way that DCS requires. The Harrier is the later development AV 8B but I imagine you already know that. I would also love it if you started a group of combat flying vids using it. Take care. Neil.

I'm not sure if that green screen is working right. We expected a Tom Cruise fighter pilot instead all we get is some Angry Santa :) just kidding (with fans like this, who needs enemies?). I liked seeing you pop in to make comments and read your expressions. It's a good addition to the viewing experience. As for content, good to keep it coming. The repetition through your sorties reinforces the procedures and shows what is routine/important and what is unique about the action to be taken in each situation. It's better you keep this coming even if you don't have more time for editing, rather than hold off until you do have time to do more polish (and who has time these days?). Definitely try the TrackIR. It's not as immersive as VR but you get the ability to look around in a natural way while still being able to see your hands and producing a higher resolution video that looks much better when all the viewers play back on 4k/Retina display devices. Sorry you have to be martyred for this Tim, it's the way of the Warrior after all :) Some frame drops in the video. Dunno if that is the KZbin re-encode or OBS dropping them. I had problems with OBS but it got much better when I switched from a SATA SSD to a M.2 SSD. The latter is much faster, and the Samsung Evo 970 line is really, really fast so great for streaming vide to. It costs a pretty penny though and depends whether you motherboard has mounts for M.2 drives. You're gonna love DCS. LHA ops in the Harrier is fun. But dropping a stick of CBU-97s on insurgents from the F-16C is just sublime.

@@FastJetPerformance Just in case you don't know - if you do go the m.2 route then there are SATA m.2 drives out there as well (m.2 really just refers to 'gum stick' form factor) which aren't any faster than the 'old' SATA SSDs we've had for years. The fast m.2 drives are labelled NVMe not SATA. Samsung arguably the best.

Really awesome channel, I just stumbled across your videos. I've just watched your engine failure on take off video fantastic. Made me think about two weeks ago during our two day heatwave at the end of June. A KZbin channel that streams planes was live from RAF coningsby watching the typhoons. I noticed something really wierd apon one of them landing, it was he second in of three just after it touched down, still keeping the weight of the nose literally 2-3 seconds after touch down I noticed a white flash and pop from the engine/turbine, from what I could see I don't think I saw smoke but it definatly seemed unusual!. I felt a bit of a Wally but I called up coningsby air traffic control to report what I'd seen, so they said they'd get the jet looked at, I noticed one of the jets after that a white with engineers were by one of the jets and they put the red engine covers on etc. I haven't a clue what it was, probably nothing and me being OTT again but I didn't want the thought of leaving it and then seeing a jet go down and a pilot get killed.

Love these videos Tim. My thoughts are picture in picture is great, adds another dimension and I miss the VR, part of the insight was seeing where you're looking all the time.

Another vote for VR! As you say, it will give us a much better perspective of your work flow in the cockpit. Also, if you’re more comfortable, your flying will be more as real life. In any case, great video :)

Great video Tim. All positive. Very interesting to see how variable claggy weather is dealt with at low level. I do a lot of FSX flying in the Loop with a Hunter T7 and UK scenery/mesh. I am an ex RAF Sumpy (Propulsion), so good to hear checklists again. Procedures work.
