Exactly, there are no viola sounds, BUT if you listen closely, there are sounds similar to Polites' mallet, who's another person Odysseus cared about. The siren's song can't properly reach his ears (because of the beeswax) so she can't get everything right to lure him into the water e.g. the daughter. Jay said that's how he envisioned the sirens' powers to work, so it's pretty cool!

@@Tioko You're really close! Jay explained that the siren's powers only work if their song reaches the human's ears and gain access to their memories. Because of the beeswax Odysseus and his crew had put in, the siren couldn't get all the information correct, for instance the fact that he had a son instead of a daughter or that he in fact wasn't at all afraid of the water. She also confused the people Odysseus cared about as during Penelope's song you can't hear the viola (her signature instrument) but rather you can hear a mallet (the signature instrument of Politest, because he was another person Odysseus cared about and died). That's actually a very nice touch. And sad.

The “He will chase you high and low” beat is a throw beat back to the lines in The Horse and the Infant- “He will burn your house and throne. He’ll find you wherever you go” when talking about the baby.

Here’s a fun detail I noticed while watching this. Whenever the siren sings, I don’t know what to call them, pulsations wavering screen around her. It starts at the very beginning, but keeps going. I didn’t catch it for a bit, but it’s a very cool addition.

8:48 Funnily enough this isn't a new motif as the siren is singing the same melodic line that Zeus does in the first song when talking about the baby "he will burn your house and throne/ he'll find you wherever you go". It never occurred to me until you compared it to whispers but now I’m wondering if [next song spoiler ahead]…… Maybe those vocals are meant to be what Odysseus is actually hearing through the beeswax. A little bit of their magic has to be reaching him since they have the insight into Penelope’s appearance and voice and the fact that there’s a child (even if they lack her instrument and say daughter instead of son) it’s just not enough to completely get him under the spell. So perhaps he is in fact hearing “whispers” of the siren song.

There are SO many animatics for Suffering, with a lot of fun small interpretations of artists. I definitely recommend searching and watching some if you feel like re-watching EPIC songs. I personally prefer the Suffering animatics that *don't* immediately betray what is happening, just like in No Longer You, but I can't deny how great they are either.

So for No Longer You, the lyric that you're thinking of wasn't 'suffering', it was Siren Song. Then there's Scylla Throat, Mutiny, and Lightning Bolt for the other three confirmed lyrics. The other ones Jay hasn't confirmed because he said it would be spoilers for upcoming songs. Also, he explained how the Siren magic works. Their song is a spell that lets them access a person's memories so they can use them in their deception. However, since Ody can't hear her song properly because of the wax, the Siren's spell doesn't really work that well. That's why she says daughter, since she can only tell Ody has a kid but not the gender. It's why she doesn't know he was lying about being afraid of the water. She also gets the context of other things wrong, getting happy things confused with negative ones and vice versa. It's why the "he will chase you high and low" cadence is so cheery, even tho that particular 'motive' is a negative one (it's used when Zeus is telling Ody about what will happen with the infant if Ody doesn't kill him, "he will burn your house and throne" and so on).
