That's a great tip and trick. CLA does something similar which he calls the "bass and drum compactor." He doesn't use dynamic EQ though, or hasn't said so.

This is exactly what Ive been looking for Doc. My mixes have been super thin... cant wait to get home and try it. Question?... will this work with the overall mix?

Best way to think of this is pretend its a reverb send for lowend ..and send a little from each track you want included to it. But the reverb is really two eqs instead.

Couldn’t the same effect have been achieved with a multiband compressor?

Sounds good but can you do an A/B with just an EQ on the master-out so we can truly hear the difference?

Bob.. If you do that EQ boost on the master bus, will it work too?

Yes but don’t cut the high end and make sure you do it with an eq and compressor that has a mix knob.

would you say this is a mix trick or a mastering dark art?
@BobbyHuff
@BobbyHuff Ай бұрын
Well it can be applied in either situation. I just do it in the mix stage to get it as close to how I want before I master.

Bob, is this trick basically the same thing as Andrew Scheps' 'Rear Bus' trick - only with adding the drums?
@BobbyHuff
@BobbyHuff 29 күн бұрын
I’m not sure as I’ve never studied his rear bus trick.
@bvdtunes
@bvdtunes 29 күн бұрын
@@BobbyHuff Thanks for responding. Along with his full mix, he creates a bus with a compressor and sends everything except drums there. Then he brings that track in to taste. I suppose the only difference is that he doesn't lo pass or specifically choose a 'magic' frequency to boost. I think adding a compressor to your trick might be the best of both ideas. Adding the drums does make sense. Thanks again.

Sorry, I didn't get the bit where you said you'd copy it and shoot it in - it seemed a key bit that was rushed over. Can you elaborate, please?
@ivywilson6515
@ivywilson6515 Ай бұрын
That FabFilter EQ works as a regular EQ or a dynamic EQ. He made a copy of the regular EQ and turned the copy into a dynamic EQ. If I understand the technique, it's compressing the boosted frequency range, making it thicker.
@kevgamble
@kevgamble Ай бұрын
@@ivywilson6515 From what I can tell, for those who don't own the FabFilter, this would also work with a free dynamic EQ like the TDR Nova, which can also do this. I will have to give it a try.

@@BobbyHuff Thanks for the response, Bob, but it doesn’t answer the actual question of why you then copied that texture nor where you shot it in. The eq already on the track you’d adjusted, so why was there a need to then copy it and shoot it in? What does shoot it in mean in this context??
