To germinate your seeds, take 2 paper towels. Put one paper towel down, wet it. Let it drain off till it stop dripping. Set your seeds about half inch apart or how often you even want to put the other wet paper towel on top. Put the paper towels inside of a ziploc bag. I'd like to put a little bit of blow up a little air inside the ziploc bag. Put it in a cupboard that's nice and dark. Come back in 5 days and every one of your seeds will sprout tape and plant the sprouted seeds and you will be happy.

you should get some seed from the locals. the plants have already adapted to the climate. you might want to also look into growing winter squash like Tahitian squash, Seminole pumpkin, and others winter squash that have a long storage life. both the squash i just mentioned i just mentioned can be store for over a year in a cool dark place, and seminole sometimes even 2 years. they make great emergency food that can be replaced yearly and fed to either humans or animals. with the way hurricanes take out infrastructure having long storing crops like that, that don't need electricity to keep them fresh. you could also purposefully cross breed some winter squash and create your own strain of landrace winter squash. you pick a bunch of varieties with good storing capabilities and plant them all together. let them cross pollinate and then the squash as you eat them. the ones you like their flavor the most and had the least amount of problems growing, you save only their seeds to grow the next year. you keep doing this year after year selecting for the best tasting and best growing/yielding etc for your area and after some years they start to be different then any of the parent stock, grows well in your location, tastes good to you. and they even eventually over many many years get uniformity of their own. one of the things about doing the landrace method is alot of domesticated varieties have lost their ability to adapt and thrive and one variety might grow well and be very resistant to powdery mildew but the flavor is only ok. but another struggled some but has much better tasting squash. the cross breeding of the 2 means you get the vigor from one and slightly better taste from the other. and your stock will have a much more diverse gene pool to pull from to combat the local plant stressors. and then you can name your strain sometime horrible. if they have alot of Tahitian squash in them, they will be long and thick... i could see those getting called dead dolphin squash. especially if you crossed them with some of the japanese winter squash and get a more white green powdery mottled squash to make them look more like an actual dead dolphin. just a thought. because it would be amusing to say you survived a hurricane by eating mostly dead dolphins.

If you haven't been told already, you should remove (cut the flower hanging at the bottom of the bananas) the big Flower that hangs down at the bottom of the banana rack. Some say it robs energy for the ripping bananas.

The cross pollenation between the types of pumpkins is only an issue if you intend to save the seeds. Then too, you might end up with a cross that grows a new, better squash.

With all that land you need a tractor with a grapple loader a box scraper, a brush Hog mower and a post hole auger.. Chickens like swings and outdoor roosts, Banana may make a good mash for a batch of moonshine. Strip the roof and put up tin use the split bamboo for rain gutters. Forget the horse idea. Great vid...really am enjoying your story! Hint...the germination tray is designed to fill the bottom with water and the holes on each pod will wick the water up from the bottom. The roots will grow longer and stronger as they reach for the water in the soil. Once the first starts to dry out you know it's time to add more water in the bottom tray. Also, one cucumber plant will give you enough cukes to eat fresh and pickle. Multiple plants will give you enough to give away. Keep up the good work!

The hardest part of starting with nothing or very little is that plans keep changing and chasing your garden all over the place! lol. I've been at it for about 14 years on this property and I now as of last two years have one spot that won't change. it's crazy how it works. and one other thing I learned, Mat, stop screwing around when something doesn't go the way it was supposed to and fix the damn chicken coop roof correctly and tear it off. I mean that as politely as possible. but I found that if you don't do something correctly you are screwing with it constantly, it's better just to go back and fix it right. you don't want problems from it while you are on another bigger project. great videos guys I love them. sailing and homesteading are my thing too. by the way Kristen you need to start thinking about pasture if you're going to get a horse. they eat a lot of hay and it is expensive to buy it. you need to seed the pasture and it takes a couple of years before it is ready for a horse. your lucky yours will grow year-round. by the way, my buddy in my picture is Vinny, he is a Dutch harness and is 16 1/2 hands. we have three horses here. I hope you get one.

You can make shrimp traps or cages to catch them. Simply make a tube with chicken wire and make a funnel on each end. Cat and dog food is good to use as bait, just pop holes in an unopened can. Canned tuna also

In Mexico, we call river shrimp "Acamayas" they are a delicacy. Unless there are mines or polluting industries up river (I doubt it) they are safe! If you walk up stream wear a glove, when you see rocks where the shrimp can hide put your arm under the rocks and grab them. Sometimes they " bite" they are to small to hurt, my friends don't wear gloves.

for container gardening, the best things I have found are simple Buckets (5Gal?) - great for potato, tomato, horse radish... and the 45Gal plastic barrels cut in half. You can cut them length wise (then build a stand for it), but if you cut them in half, leaving the flat ends as the bottoms, you can easily move them with a dolly when you need to. (used, food grade plastic containers)... P.S. Chickens love pumpkin, so will likely love your squash also.

As a sailor and a chicken owner, I'll pipe in with a couple recommendations. If the mobile chicken house is to be mobile,, take some of that hardware cloth (the strong chicken wire) and bend it 6 and 8 inches or so, at 90 degrees and put it around the perimeter, then anything that wants in will be baffled that they can't dig in at the corners of the coop. We've found that placing the coop on paving stones, or bricks around the perimeter helps also. Hope this helps. Just putting dirt around the perimeter will not help anything that wants in, they'll just dig a hole through the dirt and up and under. Love your channel guys. Cheers from ontario canada. EDIT: also you might want to look at having some diatomaceous earth around, you'll likely have mites before long, and that can be hard on the chickens. A sand bath they can use might help also.

I like your chicken coop . Just wanted to add if you would dig down 6 to 8 inches on the outside and least a foot out lay wire down and staple to the bottom board then cover with dirt you will never have anything that can dig under the pin. I know you have it so you can move it but when you find a home for pin then you can. I have had my pin for 20 years and I have never had anything get in at night.

Most of my family lives in PR and my abuelito taught me to plant in a terraced finca which is how your property is. I highly suggest you go to the local farmers markets and garden stores there. They sell the plants & veggies that grow locally and thrive I started an herbal garden in PR for my mom that way. Try and visit your neighbors fincas or others on the island to see how they grow and get experience. So many plants and veggies and fruits grow and thrive in PR. Check out the Rainforest El Yunque for inspiration 😊They even used to have competitions on who could grow the best front yard and backyard fincas until all the importing of goods started. There is a reason they renamed the island Rich Port Aka Puerto Rico because of all the wonderful resources 😉Sending you all wonderful abundance vibes and blessings 😊

Remember, chickens from first setting to hatching is 21 days. So from hatching to laying is 21 weeks. Sometimes a little sooner. Also don't use scratch as feed. Where you live it gives them to much body heat. Corn is sugar.

​@@SailingGoodBadandUgly Ideally, chicken feed from a brand you can trust. Unlike scratch, chicken feed is balanced and contains many nutrients they need. Scratch is like fast food for them. A little bit of scratch during colder months can be a treat, but it should never be their main food. For variety, in addition to chicken feed, you can also give them your food scraps, most are good for them in moderation (no potatoes, avocados, eggplants, onions, uncooked beans or chocolate, they contain compounds that are toxic for chickens).

Oh, our cats are also free ranging and feral. We haven't had a rat or mouse problem with all the barn cats around. We feed the cats AM and PM what they can eat at the time. Our cats live out their natural cat lives without domestication and castration! Actually we don't own the cats. They come and go as they please. Its worked for 4 decades.

The chicken coop's PVC headliner will catch any water coming thru the cracks between the bamboo, but the water will then drip down the coop's plywood wall potentially causing mold and rot. Maybe take the time to reposition the shrunk bamboo, or position the lower edge of PVC to actually drain outside by having it extend past the wall's top plate.
