Not if you had it done in the Uk within 5 days of your return trip. But you do need it done and the AHC stamped

Interesting I had already researched this. Now in 2022 my vet said it will cost £140 for the health form. I understood that you could travel back and forth within the 4 months. I hope my vet is right? We are taking our Labrador 2.5 years old for the 1st time to Spain on Brittany Ferries with a pet friendly cabin. She is a little timid but very gentle. Any tips would be welcome.

Im assuming you have a work visa or something to stay for longer than 90 days? If so, get your dog a French passport- you won’t regret it!

Just come across this video. My vet charged me a wapping £170 for the animal health certificate. I am driving to Brussels Airport, to fly onto Majorca. This is the cheapest option. Small dog comes in the cabin with me. My seat is €59 each way, and dog is €50 each way. To go in the hold a dog, I was quoted from Brussels €80 each way. Flights are with TUI. From UK a BA flight to Barcelona, I was quoted to be £1000 each way, then I have to get across to Palma.

Just another thing to mention before everyone rips up their pet passport, if like me you are in Europe at the moment, to get back to the UK the passport is still valid, just follow the same procedure as you would normally, going to the vet for the tapeworm treatment etc

Great video, thanks. We have a house here in UK, a cottage in Portugal and a campervan to travel between the two so I'm pretty sure we will get a Portuguese pet passport without a problem. Can I ask, when you got your French passport did the rabies proof on the UK passport carry over to the EU one? Or was the rabies vac done by your French vet?

Very informative video, may I ask how difficult was it to obtain a European pet passport, did you need to have a registered address over there, and how long is it valid for, clearly this would resolve the 4 month restrictions, ie if say going to Morocco after 90 days are up rather than being obligated to return to UK.

I'm by no means an expert in the rules, but I believe you do need an address in Europe, although I don't know if it needs to be your main residence or not. As for the process, it was really easy- took about 15 minutes.

No, but you will need to get a tapeworm treatment given by a vet and get the AHC stamped.

Sort of linked, what's your thoughts on taking fresh and frozen food on your next European trip. We could have issues as my wife has intolerance to gluten and lactose and had planned to stock up before we go. Any tips and suggestions

I believe it's no longer possible to travel with milk/ meat products from UK to EU, so you might need to pack carefully and see that the rules are for intolerances.

I believe so, but check with your vet to be sure. They might be able to travel on the Bulgarian passport without issue.

Yep, you still need Tapeworm coming back to the UK, unless from one of the countries where it's not needed- Finland, Republic of Ireland, NI, Norway or Malta.

You've got that wrong, Finland, Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland , Norway or Malta, are the only countries you do not need the tapeworm treatment, when travelling direct to the UK

Yes they do. N.I is classed as 'Europe' for the purposes of this, and you cannot enter either without all the docs, including rabies and an AHC

hi in your blog post it says your dog failed his rabies test twice?? what does that mean? you got him a vaccine and tested to rabies a month later and the vaccine didnt show with anti bodies or he had rabies? please clarify thank you!

Hey Jamie. Yep- he was done as a puppy and the test didn't take (so the level of anti-bodies wasn't high enough). The good news is that the test is no longer necessary if you are a UK resident- you just need the jab and you're good. Yes you do, you also need a passport when you travel from NI to GB and vice versa.

One thing I’m not sure of... when we got our pet passports, the vet was keen to use an EU one and not an ordinary one. As it is an EU passport, and was issued in U.K. which was then an EU country, would that still be valid, or is it now not usable? This is really confusing.

Sadly, it's still a UK-issued pet passport- and therefore now no longer valid. Confusing, frustrating and annoying.

You've got the tapeworm treatment on returning to the UK the wrong way around Taken from the Gov website Travel from countries not free from tapeworm (Echinococcus multilocularis) You’ll need to take your dog to a vet for an approved tapeworm treatment. You must do this no less than 24 hours and no more than 120 hours (5 days) before entering GB. This requirement will not change after 1 January 2021. The treatment must: •be approved for use in the country where the treatment is applied •contain praziquantel or an equivalent proven to be effective against tapeworm (Echinococcus multilocularis) You do not need to treat your dog for tapeworm if you’re travelling directly to the UK from Finland, Republic of Ireland, NI, Norway or Malta.
