With the Aux belt on these engines it is crucial it is serviced properly and only the genuine volvo belts used . It MUST be changed every 54000 miles and then at the second belt change the tensioner is changed also together with the cambelt . It should have had the lot changed at 108000 miles , but it seems it wasn't . The valves are perpendicular to the pistons so very unlikely to be "bent" however they go straight up and bend the rocker arms and also force the hydraulic lifter sideways and snap off the lifter bores ruining the head . People often fit a used head and then find it doesn't run properly. They will spend hours figuring out why but they never do find out ... because the cam lobes are forced around on the camshaft ! ( this protects the bottom end ) The best repair is a good used head and camshafts . OR a good used engine complete might be the best alternative , but fit it out with a new cambelt , aux belt and all tensioners using genuine volvo parts if you don't want it happening a third time . Volvo Water pumps are bomb proof I wouldn't worry about that . If you do DO NOT fit a non volvo waterpump it WILL fail and ruin all your good work ...... The only water pumps that I have changed on these are the non genuine ones which some unknowledgeable garage has fitted and thrown a perfectly good volvo one away ! Good Luck ...

Seen the aux belts thrown time and time again on this engine, when the timing goes out it can cause damage to the cylinder head by shattering the hydraulic lifter seats. Very good engine when running right 👍

If it has rockers, check that it hasn't a bent or broken one first, is my suggestion guys. Normally it's built in for the rockers to bend before the valve.
@endurocrosser8834
@endurocrosser8834 2 жыл бұрын
It’s not the rockers that bend.The aluminium seats that hold the hidraulic lifters are the ones that are prone to brake.also if that happens,the valves bend too.I’m 100% sure that that engine has internal faults and did not make it in on piece after such a breakdown.At least one hidraulic lifter rocker and seat are broken.The head must come off and checked for cracks.It can be welded and remachined on cnc.Also check the valves on the cnc machine and the cam axles of bent also.The internal damage depends on atvwhat speed the belt snapped. Put everything back together and obigatory new tensioner and original volvo accesories belt.It is designed to snap in half and it does not get shredded like the aftermarket ones.The shedded pieces can get throwned into the timing belt and that is what causes the culprit. Not sure that the new engine got a new tensioner after the incident.Volvo recommend checking the tensioner and belt every 20.000-30.000 km for wear and play and replace if necessary

My brother has a v50 dw10 2.0hdi psa engine I beleave, hald his timing belt teeth got stripped, turns out the rockers have a weak point so will fail before the valves bend, fitted new rockers, new belt, new water pump and its running sweet as a nut, again dunno if this is different because it's a d5

£800 is a bargain, I rebuild salvage Volvos and the front end parts are well over £1k on the used market, dashboard & airbag kit is £500+, etc etc. You'll get more than your money back on Copart as it's a very high spec vehicle, it also has radar cruise control which is a very rare option. Aux belt failures are a common 2.4 D3/D4/D5 issue unfortunately, there are many on salvage auctions for the same reason. If any D5 owners are reading this, change your aux belt, AC belt & tensioners every 2 years and it'll go on forever.

I ran an identical one of those for 3 years. Utterly faultless and loaded with kit. Quick too. That one even has adaptive cruise control (the black plastic square on the grill is a give away), collision warning and emergency brake assist. Fixed up that car is worth £5K all day long. Well worth fixing up and selling on.

They are only bullet proof if the auxiliary belt and tensioner is changed at 56k and again with the timing belt etc at 108k. The Aux belt tensioner was a weak point and modified some years ago. It the auxiliary belt breaks due to a duff tensioner it often gets caught in the bottom toothed cog for the timing belt and drawn in damaging timing belt valves and can also snap the tensioner mounting off of the crank case. Still brilliant cars but a bit growly at low speed.

This is a well known issue on this Volvo diesel engines, the "fan belt" break and get tangled in the cambelt. Online you can buy a aftermarked "gadget" for 10-20 pound, who will prevent this disaster. It was a construction defect in Volvos 5cyl diesel engines between 2001-2017, the plastic cover for the cambelt is to weak.

Rob, I've just been through exactly what you're doing on my 5 cylinder Volvo. That aux belt shredding is a really really common issue. Unfortunately it doesn't just bend a valve, it knocks a little bit off the head. Wouldn't be surprised if you're gonna have to drop a couple of grand on a new head.

I've had this exact problem with a D5: the alternator freewheel pulley seized which threw off the aux belt which in turn cut through the plastic cambelt cover & grenaded the engine. Apparently this is quite a common fault👍👍

Back in the day, a diy mechanic wouldn't think twice about lifting a head to change a valve. The water pump is a metal blade I believe so less critical to change if the bearings feel OK. I had a specialist change my (2.5 T5) cambelt and he warned that the aux belts (alternator and A/C) often get caught up in the cambelt if they fail, so changing the 2x aux is as important as changing the cam belt itself. Easy job though.

I once had a friendly chat with a traffic policeman, and asked him ‘would you ever buy an ex police car?’ He says, ‘not a Volvo. Some of those are on their third engine’. Theirs would be D5. I think it’s something to do with Volvo creating a diesel from an original petrol block, or the fundamental imbalance of a 5 Cylinder…great video 😀

Happy Birthday Rob. That happened to me when I replaced an alternator. 6 rib belt 5 rib pulley on the new alternator. It was a road side repair I didn’t notice. When that 6th rib got cut off the rest of the belt the loop grabbed the AC clutch and yanked it out of the compressor and bent the idler pulley. Even one rib is very strong. Great video great car those 5 cylinders engines are legends.

I’ve had exactly the same thing happened to me, it was the alternator pulley. You can change them out if you’ve got the right tool, you don’t have to buy a whole new alternator. I never paid attention to the fact that the belt was jumping around a bit just before it went, luckily enough I got away with it.

I think as long as it’s just valve damage, that’s still worth fixing. There’s plenty of second hand heads for sale on eBay for this engine around £500. It’s got to be worth £2500 fixed, wouldn’t be a massive profit in it but it’s probably only a days job .

I wondered when you'd get a Volvo on the channel 😎 those 5 cylinder engines are bulletproof but the belts are the main thing to watch out for, especially the crack to AC belt and tensioner, which should be replaced every 5years/54k. If you do get it sorted, make sure you put genuine belts and tensioners on and also get a genuine water pump also as pattern water pumps will fail a lot sooner. It's likely been a recon engine that's been fitted but the belts hadn't been done and it's let go again. Aside from that, great car to drive 👌🏻

That's what gets Clio 172 and 182s as well. The belt interval is 5 years but I checked the aux belt at 3 years and it was close to snapping. Shame the wrong belt was fitted which cause the eventual damage but love how you guys stay positive 👍

Happy birthday Rob. Great video as always guys. Always nice to see something different for a change. So both times problem would've been incorrect belt? 🤦‍♂️ Be nice to see more cars you don't often do like Vauxhalls or Nissans or Renaults

I tend to follow your channel regularly. I’d be very interesting to see how easy or difficult it will be to fix this issue. I’m an Audi / VW driver through & through. So to see a V60 D5 diesel being fixed, would be interesting 👍
