WWII-era De Havilland Tiger Moth has been painstakingly restored to re-live its bygone days. Mildura pilot Andrew Mason says General Motors Holden manufactured the plane years before they built their first motor cars.

A magnificent example of history that not only deserves to be remembered, but (thanks to restoration) is actually alive and well.

Good to see, a friend had chipmunk that we flew 2 aircraft from Moorabbin toSydney it go low on oil at Waga Waga but a fun trip. 1950 De Havilland DHC1 Chipmunk Aircraft, still on sale for $70,000. Met Dick Gower some time ago, but missed an airshow at Tocumwal when I drove up there about 2 years ago..

A lot of Gypsy Major engines in Australia were built at Fisherman’s bend. Tiger Moths, Austers,. I learnt how to fly in a 1943 Auster MK111, the plaque said the engine was built at GMH in 1943.

A cracking restoration, well done to all concerned! Great little aeroplanes, they teach you how to fly properly, learn what your feet are for & balance your turns using the T&S indicator. Contrary to what some folk say, Gipsy Majors are fine engines, its the idiots who abuse them are to blame. I wish you a long ownership.

In fact the tiger moth was built at Bankstown Sydney.. GMH only connection with aircraft was they manufactured and supplied the engine. GMH was also manufacturing the American Pratt and Whitney Wasp Radial engine which powered the CAC Boomerang and Wirraway aircraft and the locally built version of the british Bristol Beaufighter which were all built in factories next to GMH's factory at Fishermans Bend, Melbourne. GMH at the time being one of the few companies that had an operational foundry and therefore able to cast various components [ such as engine crankcases, cylinder blocks etc] The only other foundry in operation being that operated by the Victorian Railways at its Williamstown workshops [VR cast one piece tank turrets amongst other things]
