There once was an old man and grandchild taking a donkey to market along the road. A passerby complained that it was stupid to not use the donkey. The man sat his grandchild on the donkey and continued. A different person sneered. "What a lazy child! Forcing such a poor old man to walk." Uncomfortable, the child got down to lead the donkey as the grandfather rode. "Making that poor child do all the work, lazy bag of bones.." The child climbed up and both rode only a few miles before yet another passerby gave unsolicited advice. "You heartless people, that donkey will die under your weight." There again was an old man and grandchild leading a donkey.

I was lucky enough to actually get a class all about giving and recieveing criticism in seventh grade. The gist of it was, say somthing good avout the work, say somthing bad about the work, then say how they could improve the work. That last one's the most important one, as it kicks the creator's brain into gear and often actually leads to changes in the work. Here's an example: This video was geret, as there really aren't enough people making videos about how to give useful feedback to content creators. However, I thought it was a bit lengthy, and without reading some of the comments you showed on screen, I'm not sure how to actually leave better feedback. The video could have been improved by adding a clear section about what good feedback actually looks like. Thanks for taking the time to read this, I hope you find it useful. You can probably tone down the professionalness of it, this is the internet after all, but a comment like that will almost never go amiss with people actually looking to improve their videos. And if they aren't? Why even bother leaving giving feedback? Just enjoy the content as much as you can.
@mikequeen1237 жыл бұрын
7:36 I definitely agree on this. i love taking criticism on the art i make because it helps me improve. thought the biggest problem i have is that usually i only get "Nice" or "Good" as the reactions or comments to what i make. the few times i actually get criticism, i majorly improve because they pointed out the flaws i make and i spend time focusing on getting those fixed.

while "most unhelpful", I want to say this is the best thing you have ever done Koth. Especially that last part about two ways to take criticism. As a hatchling creator, receiving negative input about things like sentence structure or tone from people who I've asked to evaluate the emotions a particular moment may evoke, for example, have been very discouraging and deconstructive to my "work". Even when I take these comments in the best light possible, sometimes I find the people who gave feedback are convinced that I now hate them and stop communicating with me. Good criticism should include stating what is good as well as what is bad especially when given to new creators who might simply stop creating if discouraged by those whose opinions they value.

Wow this really helps me out. I have a really hard time because I’m too critical of myself. You repeated “you need to keep your goal in mind” and that put things into perspective. I should stop worrying too much about myself because nothing and no one is perfect, and that just means there’s room for improvement. So instead of feeling sorry for myself, I should take that step and constructively use that “criticism.” I’m not too sure if any of that made sense, but seriously, thank you. I love hearing your opinions about controversial topics because it gives me more perspective. Please keep creating more content!

I've been watching so many of your videos since I found your channel. I'm pretty sure that you are my favorite KZbinr now. @S1Husky7 жыл бұрын
As a KZbinr criticism is a very important tool, one that unfortunately a lot of creators don't seem to fully appreciate. When I started getting serious about making content about a year and a half ago I would've LOVED to have critiques of my work at my disposal. Hell, I probably would've improved much faster had that been the case. Also, I agree that looking back through your old work is important. One good way to tell if you're improving as a creator is looking back at your earlier work. If it's painful to sit through...then congratz! You've grown as a creator! I'll go back and re-watch videos I made even recently to look for flaws, if mounds of critiques aren't at your disposal then the next best way to improve is to be your own critic after all.

Dude.... YOU DON'T KNOW HOW MUCH I NEEDED THIS. As an ever-improving deviantART writer, I'm struggling to draw proper criticism from my audience because to them, my writing's apparently 'hit a stride'. I know that they don't mean anything rude or degrading, but to me it feels like I'll never be able to improve anymore than I already have, and because of that I've nearly quit writing more times than I can count. But at the same time, I continue to write so that even if I don't receive the criticism I'm looking for, I can further my own skills while pointing out my flaws and doing whatever I can to fix them.

This made me appreciate a friend more. Everyone else was praising something I did, but they were the ones willing to be “brutal” and point out things. I was able to see ways I could change it to the best of my ability, and remove this problem. A part of me wasn’t overly happy with something; I just couldn’t put my finger on what to do at this point. Someone else’s point of view helped me see it in a better light. You need people like that. I had always grown up telling my parents to never just say something I did was good. If there was a problem, mention it. I’m surprised I said that at a young age, rather than just wanting praise. Maybe it’s because I’m so self critical, I want others to be critical too? So I know when I’m just sick of looking at my work; or there’s genuinely a problem I can fix.

I really love your new format, it is basically everything I loved about your channel when I first found it back when you were super small. It's quite interesting to see the transition given that at one point you were getting super stressed out about trying to be impartial and you wanted to be more like IHE. So I hope you are enjoying doing these (for your sake, not mine). I did unsubscribe for a bit when you started putting streams on KZbin (I hate streams appearing in my sub feed as I like to keep my sub feed highly curated). Also I really like your patreon end of video thing, the information there feels really pleasantly high quality. I think if anything regarding that I'd say a soft rule of keeping the comments a bit shorter would be a good idea. You read them quite well, but I can definitely feel my engagement dropping when it feels like you aren't reading in your own voice for long enough. So there you go, some of the large amount of constructive criticism you expected to receive from doing this video.

The reason I subscribed to you, is because I agree on most of your opinions. I enjoy a little laughter here and there with some of the videos you have made. I didn't quite enjoy the whole Genesius Wolf act, but I am a person who hardly ever unsubscribes to a channel. I understand that not everyone can have the same opinion and I am a chill person. Even though I disliked that act you pulled; I know that you were trying something new for your channel while having some fun with it. You still understood the fact that not everyone would enjoy that kind of staged thing. Which, to me, is better than someone not knowing that and believing that they weren't ever in any kind of wrong(I am not saying exactly that you were wrong to do that kind of thing, but more of some people will call you out on it and say it was wrong). You own up to it. You even try to understand the side of things for something that you, yourself, don't like. I don't see that as often as I'd like to.

Criticism is very important. Negativity, hate, evil and all the like just as important as positivity, praise and good are. What I've been telling myself over the past couple of years and ESPECIALLY after I experience my first breakup with a girl I genuinely cared about, it's the Ying and Yang of just being. I know you're not really a spiritual person all that much but Yin & Yang are basically the concept of Good and Evil, Light and Darkness, Positively and Negatively, e.t.c; one can't exist without the other otherwise "something" will happen and i don't try to figure that out even though I do sometimes because it intrigues me. As for criticism, criticism has a force and it awakens something inside us. It can be positive or negative but after some steps (I would go about explaining how for each side but I honestly don't want to right) they both trigger a negative or tense aspect of us. Positive criticism, even though it's good intentions, we see it and either A) it helps us or B) it destroys us. Negative criticism sends a harmful intent after us and it, again, either helps or destroys us. The key difference is our own will. What will we do after we receive either? It's up to the individual.

I will admit, I came across your channel through your video criticizing that one poketuber that has been notorious for getting a rise out of people in order to grow his channel. If you had not made that video, I would have missed out on your entire channel, which is quite a treat to watch; the level of quality showing improvements with each addition is nice to see. And I admit as someone who very much wants to make a channel, I would have a hard time separating myself from the work when I get criticism; which is something I need to work on and accept that I can't do perfect, but instead good. I can't really offer any points to improve upon, so I accept that I'm not very helpful in the criticism department. Maybe, as a suggestion, make a video from time to time just going off on tangents, getting very passionate about whatever topic? I dunno, that mostly sounds very low quality and devoid of a script or something, which might not work. Anyway, sorry for the long text; hope you guys take care.

This reminds me of something that happened to me on Facebook about a month ago. I was posting some fanmade Overwatch furry skins in a gaming group. Fully clothed, non-suggestive poses, absolutely nothing sexual about the art at all. I began to recieve more and more pushback from an admin, until she left a comment on my Sombra chihuahua skin stating that she looked like Crash Banicoot in drag. To be fair, this particular skin wasn’t my best work, and I could see where he was coming from. But it still hurt when she said this, and even more so when she tried to pass it off as constructive criticism. The original comment was, in her own words, “This looks nothing like a dog. It looks like Crash Bandicoot wearing drag.” This comment irked me and a few other members of the group, who came to my defense. I didn’t really want to get involved in this argument, and the only time I ever really spoke up was a failed attempt to defuse the situation. The admin’s husband joined in at this point, calling all of my art terrible and threatening to delete it because, supposedly, nobody wanted to see it. He kept mentioning a poll he had taken with the others regarding furry content in the group, but I never uncovered any evidence of such a poll, and neither did some of the other people I asked about it. The husband went on to say that he was a professional artist and got criticized on a daily basis. I’m just an Overwatch fan who had an idea and wanted to share it with other fans. I wasn’t trying to do anything substantial with it, I just wanted people to see it. He refused to apologize for what he and his wife were saying, and eventually threatened to kick me and everyone who had been supporting me out of the group, delete all my Anthrocon skins from the gallery and was just being an all around dick. I just left the group shortly after all that, and after seeing a post another member had made about the whole fiasco highlighting the meaner points of the argument and stating that the admins were cyberbullying me. What’s your opinion on this? Were they bullying me or were they just being out of control with their criticism?

for me i've pretty much just became my own critic, pretty much everyone i come across either praises what i've done (which is very appreciated, pretty much my only type of creative high) or just the stupid comments that just say something is bad. which it is and i know it. i learn from hindsight, i can easily look back at my own videos and go "well this was a problem" with my sketches for example they exported in decreasingly shitty ways, should i of uploaded them in that state? probably not but i'm not at the point where i get the house to myself enough to get serious about content creation. also tip to new creators, side channels are a god sent, when i moved my vlogs from my main to a side the views stayed consistant for them, the "effort" videos gained more views and both channels grew after the stagnant state it was in for ages. of course my goal was to have fun and still is but now i've been working for nearly a year i'm aiming to make next year one of growth from investing in new tech, making more side channels to diversify content segmentedly while cross promoting the channels and getting off my ass and making shit. also probably going to burn this shitty PC because it's caused me so many problems.

I actually really liked the F**K videos. I found them to be funny and pretty insightful. Honestly most of your vids are which is why I subscribed in the first place. I'm not a youtuber so I don't have much to say about that aspect, but I do have a lot of debate/public speaking experience. Based on that I can say you do a good job at following the strategy of being reasonable (when you're making serious vids like this one). One of the best ways to be convincing is to sound like the most reasonable guy in the room. That way you don't scare off people who don't agree with you and they actually hear you out. They might not have their mind changed, but they won't immediately dismiss what you're saying either. I guess what I'm saying is I don't really have much criticism because you do a pretty good job.

Criticism is my weakness. Always was. I allowed it to change my content (as a wannabe writer) and after years of trying to make everyone happy I not only ruined the vision I had for my stories trying to make everyone happy and give them what they want I drove myself insane... LITERALLY... as in full fledged full blown kiniption followed by two self termination attempts. During the kiniption I pushed the fandom away in the worst way. A lot of what I got wasn't criticism. It was assholes being assholes. A lot of it was just people who had a fetish where my characters fit being perverts and milking me for more content for fap material. Some of it was honest to goodness criticism. Where I failed was not being able to properly categorize it all correctly (The "we want pronz!" was easy enough, though some cases they hid it well enough that I honestly thought they liked what I wrote for the story). Hundreds of commissioned pics I had done over more than two decades lost so much of it's meaning, some of completely lost. So my advice is to say (as you did) to know what category to place the criticism. It could cost you everything if you had an obsession as unhealthy as mine was.
@TrueChaoSclx7 жыл бұрын
I have to agree with both FurryFlesk and Rovolloth. I don't write anywhere near as much as I used to (and most of my old stuff doesn't exist anymore), because when I used to write, I never got *any criticism at all.* Without any criticism to help me grow, and barely any feedback at all, it felt absolutely pointless and unfulfilling. I also never wrote fetish garbage to appeal to "those audiences" for easy attention, and comparing myself to one of my friends who does precisely that? Their work is honestly shit, they never get any criticism to improve their work, and their quality is completely stagnant - but they get commissioned to write that shit anyway because they appeal to "that group". I pretty much stopped writing because it feels like actual effort, drive to improve, and a desire to make honestly good, high quality work is punished because no one gives enough of a shit about it or about helping people improve. My opinion? People need to GIVE more criticism, there's this massive stigma against doing so and it's harmful to everyone - people who need and want it don't get it, and people who do get it don't know how to take it because they're not accustomed to it.

Wow... well, normally I would get mad about this video but... this is... surprisingly informative, interesting and... very good to watch for criticism! But yeah, as I watch this video, and the way you say how the ''anti-fan'' or ''hater'' people who think they're fans but are just hating you over and over, and how you mentioned my notes on Deviantart, all I got to say is, ''... Oh my god... I'M a hater! I claimed to be a fan and yet... I just constantly bash him for joking and not taking criticism!'' Here is my response: First, I understand why you feel that way, Kothorix. I admit, I was being REALLY immature and was just plain hating you and your videos. I believed my problem was that you didn't really inform us that these videos were really comedy or really just jokes, and I think you might need to put a disclaimer that says: ''This video is meant for comedy. Don't take anything seriously!'' or something like that. I think that's the reason why I took your exercise, F-List, and medication videos too seriously because I didn't really know that your videos were just based on comedy and not necessarily facts, especially your mother day's card video, which I had personal grudge against, and I think your character was being kind of too mean-spirited for my taste, so that's why I got really angry about that video. Second, since you did inform me about how to take criticism, NOW I understand why you might not respond to people's comments. I didn't realize that the Internet has a bunch of young kids who have nothing better to do for themselves. I myself get REALLY angry sometimes on the Internet, and that anger got the best of me, which made me post some death threats and some other things that were not very nice. I don't think the things I've said were actually legitimate criticism because as me being a hater, I just think I was trying to find an excuse JUST to hate you. So that's probably why you often ignored my notes. I apologize for ANY things that I've said, from your exercise video, calling it ''propaganda'', your F-List video, because it was just me taking that video too seriously, and from your medication video. I understand now that ranters like IHE, AVGN etc. like to make those videos just for entertainment, not just facts or to make people believe in you. Sometimes, I didn't realize that the things I've said were NOT criticism, but death threats. I think that's the lesson I've learned: Death threats DOESN'T make you a critic, death threats makes you an ASSHOLE, and that's what I have been to you. I also apologize for going after your fans and starting the drama on the medication video, where I called anyone who disagreed with me a, ''fanboy'' or ''fangirl'' as it was just me being immature on the Internet, and I thought they were just trying to shame me, when they're really not... You'll forgive me for deleting that whole comment section where I had the argument with Furious Flyer Dashie and Vanae, and the other username I forgot the name of, I couldn't take screenshots of it again. And finally... I just want to say this, Kothorix... I believe criticism can be taken when it's legitimate and specific on what you're doing wrong, and I believe criticism can NOT be taken and will just be ignored when it's not legitimate and is just flat out hating you, and telling you to, ''get buried alive'' and things like that. Well Kothorix, I think I might want to watch your F@CK IT videos a little more, so I can at least try to see where the jokes were, and that I can at least try to give legitimate criticism on your work so you can improve. Hopefully, this might make you feel better and we can all put this drama to rest. Thank you Kothorix for this video. May God bless you for all eternity! :) Oops! I said something religious! Lol!

I don't like giving criticism because I don't want anyone to take it to heart, but I love getting it because that is how I got better at drawing. I don't really care about popular people because I don't like to make relationships with anyone. However, I do watch and follow popular people because apparently they did something good to become so popular, but like I said, the reason I don't give criticism is because I try to be a nice person, and I don't know who will take it to heart.

Hi :). I'd like to leave a quick note of thanks, and I thought this video would be a good one to leave it on. I find (internet) subcultures fascinating, and a few weeks ago I decided to try and educate myself a bit on the furry fandom, to see what it is actually all about, and why people are attracted to it. I have found your videos on the whole informative and well thought out, and I have enjoyed watching your videos on other topics as well. Thanks for painting a thorough picture of the fandom, both positive and negative. It's great for those of us who have had very little exposure to anything furry before (well, other than my pet cat, but that's en entirely different matter ;) ). Thanks!

Very informative and insightful as always kothorix. Now I'm not a furry myself so this might have that slant but despite watching most videos you upload the furry focused ones don't feel as engaging as the others. All your still give me enjoyment and are usually well worded yet are more research/opinion and editorial rather than entertaining. Not to say I don't find entertainment in your videos I just enjoy op-eds and this type on content but I can see where some people might find a 10min+ video on say alt-furry the focuses on opinion and fact over traditional entertainment (action, comedy, etc). Just thoughts and observations

Huh funny I am the 800th person to like the video but besides that yeah criticism is needed to improve on yourself and what you do, I honestly say I like your content and other things I say that are good cause I don't see anything to criticize about what you do or how you do things but I will say this video gave me a much better understanding about taking criticism and that makes me a bit happy I guess idk.

Since this video is about criticism............ I really enjoy your videos!!... Especially your furry one(s), cause i have a furry friend (and no, i'm not a furry, nor against furries) who seems would relate to many of your videos and helps me understand even better, even though i got the "main idea" of furries!!!

Most internet criticism isn't constructive though, the smallest voice may become the loudest. (Least important comes to the forefront) Its a fine line to walk though.

If you can't take criticism at all, then you probably shouldn't be an artist or producer in the first place. It's something you must accept in order to be successful and to keep growing. If you don't, then you'll become someone like MinorElite and see criticism as your worst nightmare.

I seen that part where the guy was talking about Therians and Othekin, and was thinking. Would you, anyone here in the comments, classify me as a Therian? I do believe some connection between humanity and other species. Scientists have said every species is related to each other, coming from a common ancestor. In a way I am related to the animals I have chosen as my fursonas. Although it may be a very faint relationship, it still, exists, which causes me to think there is some connection between our minds, and those of animals. For instance, how whales have finger bones, as well as snakes, even though there isn't much use for them. Animals can move their ears, as we can too, although it may be very little movement. So, summarizing, I believe we, as a species of organism on this planet, do have connections between different animals, at least physically in certain ways, and through the timeline of evolution. I do believe in my connection to these animals, but accept I am not the species of that animal, although I have the connections to other species, as they do to us. I accept my humanity, but also recognize these similarities we share with others, and others share with us.

Somebody I've noticed this, too. I wouldn't call it Therianism, personally, but I know what you mean. I noticed this in Biology. :)

hoya, criticism time! I guess if there is any video to put it under it would be this one. I realy like your voice but it can be a little hard to listen to you attentively during those "longer" videos. Now, to potentially solve this maybe experiment with some background music or do something to keep me want to watch the video instead of only listen to it. I know that you use some pictures sometimes but it doesn't feel rewarding to look at the screen the whole time just to catch the occasional pic. Besides I think you had some small slip-ups in video editing towards the end with the timing on the blur beeing off. Also you "hid" the name on onw of the comments but still said a name or smth? On a lither note, I really like the way you incorporate your patrons in the videos, just saying :) Ofc. I could give you a list of all the positives but I'll keep it short and end it here. Just be aware that I enjoy your content :)

I may disagree with you on some fronts, There is literally only one point that got on my nerves. It was the point when you said that couples joke about driving eachother crazy means that they aren't happy together. Other than that, I sentimentally support you. And I have met a commenter similar to the deviantart dude. I had fun going back and forth as he called people names like "poopy diaper"

And, this might be common knowledge, but there is never a clear-cut path, even if you know your destination. If you stay the same, people get bored and move on to the new shiner thing. It happens to some of the best. But, if you make changes, you risk dying out more quickly as the supporters you already have move in a different direction.

When you make videos I like that the background is usually nice and relaxing, without grabbing my attention. So please stay away from bright neon colours and rapid movement. My second but more opinionated statement is regarding your character/fursonna. The expressions are good but at times it feels as if they don't always fit your voice. Though I have been diagnosed as mildly autistic. I mean actually diagnosed, none of that tumblr stuff. Finally why does your chatacter/fursonna look western but have skinny legs? Those are supposed to be large for the weight of dragons are enormous.

what are your thoughts on net neutrality and the repeal
@JayRoboFox7 жыл бұрын
We need it now more than ever, but now the government is going to take one of the few things protecting people's opinions on the internet. We've already got social media mass banning accounts that have different opinions to that of the staff, content being takin down and hidden on KZbin, now if net neutrality get taken away I'm afraid any opinion that deviates from the "norm" aka media pushed sjw bullshit

Kothorix, I enjoy all your content. The political and controversial content needs to be discussed. That being said, I rather miss the fuck it rants. It was a needed break from the all to real shit you cover. Again, the real shit needs to be talked about, but the occasional pallet cleanser is nice.

For real, I have enougth ennemies, I'd like some more neutrality in my life, conflict makes me tired. PS: there is a difference betwin pointing to something that is wrong, and pointing to why something is wrong, I know that criticism is useful, but sometimes it's delivered in such a way you just don't know what to do with it, OK, the color is ugly? but, I don't like blue, I don't like pink, I don't like yellow, should I make my background red? Red is an awesome color, but I don't like red, so, Yeah... I know green sucks, well, I like green, so green stays. But if you tell me that a plain green background is boring, I know can take it, maybe he don't like green when he sais that, but knowing that plain color is boring, I can take a look at it from an other side, would a gradiant be better, maybe have a patern? Should I have it scrooling or be random? There I can do something with it. I don't know if you understand what I'm saying.
