The plaintiff rented a room from the defendant. He says the defendant kicked him out of the house and stole his jewelry and other belongings, so he’s suing for damages. The defendant argues the plaintiff was a troublemaker who didn’t get along with other people. She admits she kicked him out, but the defendant left behind trash. The defendant is countersuing for damages and unpaid rent.

Exactly! Nobody does. But watching these court shows makes me want to keep receipts at least for expensive items. I say anything over $100 that's of value, a receipt should be kept. Or if you use your bank or credit card that may help show proof, though the statements usually don't say what was purchased, only which store the purchase took place. There's this app where you can take pictures of your receipts and have record of them. I may need to look into that.

A credit card receipt, or the items bought online are easier to show proof for (gathered BEFORE court of course). I save receipts for bigger items just put it in the same folder. Some throw em in a showbox... but I agree you don't save receipts for every little thing. I might now!

Plaintiff left under a hostile environment. People act like "oh, why didn't you take this and that", I know when I am amped up, under a stressful situation, I am NOT thinking of packing up jewelry, laptops, and all my valuable items. Especially if I had my partner with me, and wanted to get her out of that situation. Especially if I think my room is locked and secured as well.

For small everyday things, no. But for expensive things like sound equipment in this case, sure. If you don't have a CC bill, email, or anything like that, put the paper receipt in a box or something. The judge shouldn't have to guess because of a plaintiffs irresponsibility for large purchases. It's exactly what a receipt is for, proof.

When I was 18 I got in a fight with my landlord and decided to leave that night. I get paid for the full month, so that night I only packed an overnight bag, with toiletries, clothes, and an Xbox for something to do at my mom's house. When you leave in a haste, especially uf police are involved, you don't think about grabbing things like jewelry and sentimentals. Came back literally the next morning with a truck and everything was gone, even the furniture? Luckily i was able to get it all back after threatening law suit.

The only idea I had was if you were fortunate enough to have used a debit or credit card there will be a transaction to view, but if you paid cash then your absolutely screwed. Honestly, this should’ve never went to court; Defendant: took over a house, tried to evict people, took them to court, still wasn’t happy, made a scene so tenant could leave, then lied that she didn’t throw anything away. She was fed up having people there, and with the video showing her acting crazy, it’s completely believable that she would clean out his room to spite him Plaintiff: teamed up other tenants to not pay rent, which again, given the circumstances of the landlord’s behavior makes sense to protest against her treatment of them, but that doesn’t make it okay. Also, he slipped up: 15:41. So which is it then? Did she throw it away? Or did you throw it away to spite her and take her to court? I understand his situation, I was thrown out of my house by my parents after my honeymoon. I still have stuff there, but I made sure to have my laptop, phone, switch. It’s been more than a year and I’m still trying to remove stuff. Grant it, they’re my parents so they didn’t treat me like this lady-but when you’re poor and shit hits the fan, even with a locked door, grab your valuables at least. Especially jewelry and cash, because if they do throw away your stuff illegally, at least you have something to fall back on. I don’t agree with the judge though, because she didn’t ask why he was delaying in getting his stuff. Who’s to say he didn’t have work the next few days and couldn’t go? Or he had to take his gf to get checked after what happened? Or it took that much time to get a police escort to get his stuff? Or if the police insisted he wait so make sure people called down before he went? But what do I know? 🤷🏽‍♀️

I think JM missed the key thing. The plaintiff left under hostile conditions and left to cool off. The agreement was already in play. Hence, he had a few more days to move. No one thinks, "Oh, let me grab my expensive things right now, even though I have locks on the door." Also, that music equipment is not cheap. The only thing I see is that it was difficult to prove to the jewelry (grill). Even then, grill ranges from $500+ per top or bottom.
