Carmax associate here. Beautiful car! Although I don't understand all the carmax hate lol. It's not an insulting offer, its more of a "Who walks into a carmax to buy a Buick Grand National?" offer. Also, even IF we bought it, even IF we sold it, what lender/bank is going to offer someone a decent loan on it? It's a 40 year old performance car. It's hard enough to get a 72 month term loan on a 10+ year old car. They MIGHT finance someone for it but it would be a very short term loan, which would mean the payments would be pretty damn high. So now ask yourself, why would carmax pay retail value for a vehicle that has a TINY market for it, and an even SMALLER chance of getting a good loan on. Too much risk/reward when we could just stick to buying 2010+ reliable and popular commuter vehicles that the general public would buy. Beautiful car though. I love when people bring them through our store.

Well said! People really don’t understand a huge company like Carmax will cater to the majority market, yea it’s unique but that’s just makes finding a potential buyer harder and that would reflect the offer. The average everyday person is likely to buy a stock Camry than a unique GNX

What you fail to understand is the person that will buy this car, will pay cash for it. It's not going to be a person's daily driver. It will go in someone's garage and will only be driven on fair weather days. This is some people's dream car.

There are many finance companies that specialize in muscle car loans. JJs best you get long term loans at good rates. His boss probably has muscle car buyers on his roladex and that car would never see the car max lot.

i was 23 years old, working as an auto mechanic at an Ohio Buick/Olds/Pontiac dealership near Cincinnati in 1989. It had rained the night before and the road was still a little wet. A customer brought his GNX in complaining that it shifted too soon out of passing gear so my service manager had me take the car for a test drive. I took it on the main road, got it up to 55 mph then stomped on it... after the 1 or 2 second turbo lag, I was horrified to realize that the car started drifting sideways. I brought it back to the lot and told my boss I wasn't able to test how soon it up-shifted. It was an awesome experience, though.

@@jimmywhitlow2012 It’s more a symbol of the times, buddy. With the 70’s gas shortages and new emissions regulations, muscle cars fell out of favor and much of their performance was choked to meet the new normal. The 250-260HP this car was rated at, entirely underrated by the way (the real HP output was estimated at 300+), was fairly rare given the times.

I guessed $15k. Not surprised. It's such a unique and customized car, they'd probably just wholesale it off anyway, or one of the CARMAX employees would scoop it up for that price or a little more from them. Outright, you should be able to get around $35k-40k for it based on what I see and what I know about it. Nice ride, homie. The saying, "Money talks and BS walks," rings true here. You know darn right well, that if you want a true value on a machine like this, it is Hagerty or Hemmings Motor News, Mecum, Barrett Jackson, Vanguard Motor Sales, or some specialty "mom and pop" shop that ONLY deals in "toy cars," like this and knows their true value. Again, these things were just AWESOME! Don't ever sell it!!!!!

As a former 1987 Turbo-T owner with the astro-roof, I advise you to keep your car. I was young, needed the money, and made a quick decision in 2002 to sell it. I always look back in regret because of the rarity of the car and how fun it was to drive. Money will come and go, but you have a piece of automotive history. Most importantly, I see the love put into the car with the Kirban Performance fender flares (tough install) and louvers, bigger brakes and rear disc conversion, leather interior, lightning rod shifter, wheels, etc. I hope you kept the car. Camaros, Mustangs, and Vettes are a dime a dozen, but Turbo Buicks are truly unique (always have been).

Well I have a 87 GN with 26K miles. Not knowing the miles but from what I could see I would say that was a fair offer. To true GN owners, the more you customize the lower you drive the price. The interior needs work and it looks like you put leather seats in. Lowering the car also will drive the price down. Collectors want GNs that have not been messed with. Fixed up the car and enjoy it would be my suggestion.

For a car that is "modified" all over the place I think it was pretty generous. Nobody looking to buy this car, who can actually afford it. Wants one with all the fast and furious shit on it. It wouldn't go on a Carmax lot, it would go to a wholesale auction. Anything older than 5 years, with certain lower mileage exceptions, are designated as wholesale cars. Carmax is in the business of selling to the masses, not the enthusiast. Think Camry/F150/Altima, not GNX/Gallardo/Veyron
@matthewf8268

Carmax can not sell any vehicle on the lot that’s more than 11 years old. It would have to go to wholesale. If there was a 1/100000 percent chance someone would buy that car would you put 40k of your own money on that to hope that someone would buy it? There’s such a small market for his car. Cut carmax a break. Why do you think they’ve been around since the 90s? It’s because they make smart financial choices. It’s hard enough to get loans approved on cars that are 10 years or more old by the banks let alone something of this cars age and uniqueness.

No way. It's not going to happen don't sell 16000 is nothing. Ur a good man. Forget carmax, the guy didn't have a clue on the car. I drove a 1987 grand national as a salesman the cars were going for 45,000 or higher. Anyway nice car .

Carmax and nearly every other dealership in America won't offer you what it's really worth. I haven't even finished watching and my guess is their offer was at least $7-10K or likely more UNDER what it's really worth due to their profit margins. I'm sure you know that already. I like what you've done from what I can see in your vid.

By the looks of it going by what you said you've done to it, it looks like it's been all gone through and everything is in working order. Assuming you haven't gotten rid of your GN already if you do part with it, I can tell you this, you will regret it later on. So going back after it's gone will be problematic to find another GN that you totally know is 100% the way it should be without having to roll out some serious cash for it. I'm quite sure it's taken quite a bit of time and money to bring it up to where it's at now. You're better off not getting rid of it. There won't be any regrets going forward in the future. Your GN will only go up in value as time goes by. I have made mistakes parting with cars in the past that I should have kept looking at there value now. Don't make that same mistake.😎

Did you do this for a joke??? Everyone that knows what a GN is knows it’s worth a lot more than that. As nice as it is and as much work and money that you’ve put in it. You would need your head examined if you sold it!! That car is why I subscribed to the channel. I would take it over the ZL1 any day. The ZL1 is bad in it’s on right but, it’s not a GN.

That's a collector's car, my dad bought one back in 87' too. It was stolen in 91'. He had the club and and kill switch on it. They had to flat bed that car. Never had the chance to drive it, I was 9 when it was stolen.

A regular customer where I used to work had a GMC Syclone. It was nearly new. He had several anti-theft devices including 'The Club'. Worked 2nd shift at a factory in a fairly busy industrial complex. Always parked it out at the end of the parking lot so it didn't get dinged. One night after work, it was gone. About a YEAR later a farmer found the FRAME dumped in a ditch near the back of his property. Only thing left was a few misc. brackets and some wire harness clips. Nobody saw anything. Either the theft OR the dumping of the frame.

My last sports car was a heavily modded and upgraded and frame off restoration 1985 GN: interior also new. My actual dream car when I was in my twenties. Damn shame you gotta completely reengineer the things for 'em to be "fast" by today's standards. But anyway, no business would buy a 40 year old car for more than $16,000. Those cars MUST be sold at auctions to get what they're worth. Not to mention the most popular car IN THE WORLD right now is the Hellcat. It became 74x more popular than the GN was in the 80s and 90s. Dodge did they're thang! I got huge looks for mine even before it was restored. But now at car shows nobody checks out GNs. Cyclones and Typhoons still get looks just because they wonder what they are. (See my videos.)
